Requests for permissions

This page enables administrators to handle requests for permissions on the English Wikipedia. Administrators are able to modify account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, file mover, extended confirmed, mass message sender, new page reviewer, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback, template editor rights and AutoWikiBrowser access.

Editors wishing to request a permission flag here should do so following the procedure below. Editors requesting permissions are advised to periodically revisit the requests page, as notifications will not always be given after a decision is made. Editors should not expect their request to be answered right away and should remember to be patient when filing a request. To find out what permissions your account has, go to Special:Preferences, where your permissions are listed in the user profile tab under "Member of groups".

Requests for permissions are archived regularly; please see Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Archive for an index of past requests.

Permissions

Handled here

  • Account creator (add requestview requests): The account creator flag is granted to users who are active in the request an account process. The flag removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24 hour period. It also allows users to make accounts with names similar to other accounts. The account creator flag is only given to users who participate in the ACC process and may be removed without notice should a user's participation in the account creation process cease.
  • Autopatrolled (add requestview requests): The autopatrolled flag is granted to users who are active in the creation of new articles. This tool is granted so their creations are auto patrolled in Special:NewPages. Unlike other requests, any user may nominate an editor for Autopatrolled, even without that user's consent. A user who wishes to have this flag generally should have created at least 25 articles and must be trusted, experienced, and must have demonstrated they are familiar with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, especially WP:BLP and Wikipedia:Notability.
  • AutoWikiBrowser (add requestview requests): AutoWikiBrowser is a semi-automated MediaWiki editor for Microsoft Windows, designed to make tedious repetitive tasks quicker and easier. It is essentially a browser that automatically opens up a new page when the last is saved. When set to do so, it suggests some changes (typically formatting) that are generally meant to be incidental to the main change. Please read the rules of use and registration requirements on the main page before requesting permission. This is not a true user right, but access needs to be granted by administrators just like other permissions. If approved, your name will be added to the CheckPage. Users with under 250 non-automated mainspace edits or 500 total mainspace edits are rarely approved. You will need to give a reason for wanting AWB access.
  • Confirmed (add requestview requests): The confirmed flag may be granted to new users who have not yet hit the threshold for autoconfirmed status. These are users who have not had both 10 edits and 4 days experience. People with this flag can upload files and edit semi-protected pages before hitting the autoconfirmed flag. Users requesting this flag must indicate clearly why they should be exempted from the customary confirmation period.
  • Event coordinator (add requestview requests): The event coordinator user right allows editors to create multiple new accounts, and to temporarily confirm accounts so that they can create new articles.
  • Extended confirmed (add requestview requests): The extended confirmed flag is normally automatically added to accounts after 500 edits and 30 days, but may be added to legitimate alternate accounts of users that already have this access. The flag allows users to edit pages under extended confirmed protection.
  • File mover (add requestview requests): The file mover user right is intended to allow users experienced in working with files to rename them, subject to policy, with the ease that autoconfirmed users already enjoy when renaming Wikipedia articles.
  • Mass message sender (add requestview requests): Mass message sender enables users to send messages to multiple users at once. This flag is given to users who have made requests for delivery in the past, clearly showing an understanding of the guidance for use.
  • New page reviewer (add requestview requests): The new page reviewer user right allows users to mark pages as patrolled and use the page curation toolbar. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Page mover (add requestview requests): The page mover user right allows users experienced in working with article names to move them, subject to policy, without leaving behind a redirect. They may also move all subpages when moving the parent page(s). General guidelines include making 3,000 edits and 6 months of editing history. At administrators' discretion, the right may be accorded on a time limited basis or indefinite.
  • Pending changes reviewer (add requestview requests): The reviewer flag is granted to users who are experienced enough with Wikipedia editing and its policies for contributing to the process of reviewing articles placed under pending changes.
  • Rollback (add requestview requests): Rollback enables users to remove vandalism much more quickly and efficiently than by undoing it. Users who do not demonstrate an understanding of what constitutes capable vandalism fighting, either because they have no or little history of doing so, or show a poor ability to discern between good and bad faith edits will not be granted this right. Also, it is unlikely that editors with under 200 mainspace edits will have their request granted. For a more detailed explanation of rollback and information about when it is appropriate to use the tool, see Wikipedia:Rollback. For information about the technical details of the feature, see here.
  • Template editor (add requestview requests): The template editor flag allows users to edit protected templates and Lua modules. General guidelines for granting include making at least 1,000 edits overall (with at least 150 to templates or modules), being a registered user for over a year, and having a record of successfully proposing significant edits to several protected templates. Users should demonstrate proficiency with template syntax and an understanding of the need for caution when editing heavily-used templates.

Handled elsewhere

Several permissions are requested and handled elsewhere:

Removal of permissions

If you wish to have any of your permission flags (except administrator) removed, you should contact an administrator. If you want your administrator flag removed, you should contact a bureaucrat.

This is not the place to request review of another user's rights. If you believe someone's actions merit removal of a permission flag, you should raise your concern at the incidents noticeboard.

The bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight flags are removed at meta:Steward requests/Permissions. Stewards will typically not carry out such requests unless they are made on behalf of the Arbitration Committee, by a user who is requesting their own access be removed, or in cases of an emergency.

Process

Requestors

To make a request for a permission, click "add request" next to the appropriate header and fill in the reason for wanting permission.

Any editor may comment on requests for permission.

Administrators

Administrators are permitted to grant account creator, autopatrolled, confirmed, event coordinator, file mover, mass message sender, page mover, pending changes reviewer, rollback and template editor flags to any user who meets the criteria explained above and can be trusted not to abuse the tool(s). Administrators may either grant these permissions permanently or temporarily. For convenience, a bot will automatically comment with relevant data if the user does not meet configurable qualifications. Even if the bot does not comment, administrators should review the user's contributions and logs to ensure the tools will be used appropriately and check for any indication of potential misuse.

Once an administrator has granted a permission or decided to deny a request, they should add {{done}} or {{not done}} respectively under the request with their comments. If a user already has the requested permission, or is autoconfirmed and requesting confirmed, {{already done}} should be used. N hours after the last comment was made (as specified by the config), the request will be archived automatically: approved requests will be placed here; declined requests will go here. See User:MusikBot/PermClerk#Archiving for more information on archiving functionality.

You do not need any special permissions to upload there, and you can use the same username and password you use here. Event coordinator

User:Meg Meiman

I'm a librarian who's co-hosting an edit-a-thon on April 7, and would deeply appreciate the ability to create accounts for users for this drop-in event. While I haven't yet created a link for this event within Wikipedia, I can share with you the link to the LibGuide I created for the event. Also, I won't be using the Program and Events Dashboard. Again, I only need account creation privileges for April 7, if that helps. Meg Meiman 12:12, 19 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I would like to continue to create and curate the encyclopedia and feel confident that I am ready to accept additional responsibility. I am applying for page reviewer rights after learning the proper procedure in not only editing and creating articles, but also converting them. I have created articles and never had them deleted, and I thoroughly understand the standards in review. I hope to identify drafts suitable for the mainspace and help the community reduce the number. Good day! I am applying for this permission because I think I can execute the responsibility of a new page reviewer. I have experience in rollbacks and I enjoy reverting vandalism, but I also want to learn other sides of Wikipedia. New pages reviewer seems interesting to me as it is a side of Wikipedia that I have rarely seen. I have read the guidelines and according to my own opinion, I am able to do the task as outlined. I have been blocked once for WP:3RR violation more than 6 months ago, and I have promised that I would be more careful in that regard. Thank you very much and have a great day to y'all. I am requesting new page reviewer as I have gotten more experienced with deletion, notability, netrality, advertising, and new drafts in general since I last requested new page reviewer. Page mover

User:Super Dromaeosaurus

In December 2021, I was temporarily given this permission for three months by Primefac [4]. As I stated there, I wanted this permission simply for editing more comfortably, and it has indeed been quite useful for me. I believe all the moves I've done over the last three months have been rightful, an exception being a certain one but that was the result of a disagreement (read about it here). Thus, I am asking for being granted this permission again, this time indefinitely. Super Ψ Dro 19:06, 11 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am actually leaning towards declining, mainly based on the moves performed in early January - vitriolic edit summaries for one, but moves that didn't strictly require the suppression of a redirect for a second reason (the older titles seem to be reasonable alternate names, spellings, or just uncontroversial redirect titles). Will leave this for someone else to comment on. Primefac (talk) 12:15, 17 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I can justify those. With "vitriolic edit summaries" in early January I assume you mean this one. If we look at the article's history, we can see a relatively new user completely blank a page [5]. The edits were reverted by another user, but the move that the user performed without an edit summary was reverted by me. The fact that they blanked the page and that they moved the page like that prompted me to call their edits as vandalism. And, I mean, were they not? And there's also a CSM Târgu Mureș (women's basketball) page, so the new title that this user chose, "CSM Târgu Mureș (basketball)", was ambiguous. I don't see any problem with this case.
In January I also deleted this redirect. The article was titled by a user that has shown several problems in my opinion. I've left them many comments so far in their talk page and I had to waste time in nominating to AfD several of their articles (such as Armenian dialects in Romania or List of Romanian settlements in Kazakhstan). The dialect is simply not a language, so the title was wrong, and I didn't feel like explaining once again something to this user, although I probably should have.
I also deleted in January this one. I've checked some more and apparently "L'Aïnsa" is the Catalan name of the village. I restored the redirect, and take the fault with that one.
Finally, in early January, I deleted these [6] [7]. I wrote a long justification on the move that I did on the renamed article's talk page [8], in which I mentioned that the reason that I deleted the redirects were because they were ambiguous. "Vlach" in Bulgaria stands for Romanians (we got an article for them now) or Aromanians (they also have their page), so there was just no need for it. I explain more on the message left there.
I honestly think my actions when using this permission have been a net positive, except for the L'Aïnsa case, which I've rectified, and for the other case that I mentioned at my original comment here. Now, I can understand there might be some concerns, as I've acted on my own in several cases, and I probably should have followed the standard practices in some of them. However, I still believe that all the suppressions I did except those two were justified. I can act more carefully from now on, and be more respectful of processes like WP:RFD. Super Ψ Dro 15:08, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I'll comment here, given the general paucity of administrators willing to deal with extendedmover. It is a higher-trust permission for good reason, and suppressredirect should only be used in limited circumstances. And while I believe that all of the moves were carried out with good intentions, I fear that they were carried out on a more simple "do I think a redirect is useful here?" basis rather than a policy-based line of reasoning. Maybe this is just process/policy wonkery on my part, but I think it's something worth thinking about for the reviewing administrator, who will have to weigh these concerns against the applicant's promise to act more carefully. ( Peanut gallery comment) Sdrqaz (talk) 15:53, 4 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Styyx

My previous request was declined a few months ago because I didn't have 3000 edits. What I said there still counts. I've been patrolling new pages and draftifying some for a while now. I'm a global rollbacker, which already grants me suppressredirect. The problem when I draftify an article with the MoveToDraft script which I used until November, is that the script recognizes my global rights and moves without a redirect (breach of the global rights policy, I know), but since I don't have local rights, it immediately creates an empty page under the original title with CSD R2 tag (when there is no redirect). This obviously causes some confusion among deleting admins, and I was even told to "do something else" until I get PM. Since doing nothing wouldn't get me this right granted, I've continued to draftify by hand, which is quite inconvenient as it doesn't automatically notify the creator, nor does it do the regular clean up needed. Also see Special:PermaLink/1072169313#Weird problem with the script and User talk:Styyx/Archives/2021#Page mover and R2. ~StyyxTalk? ^-^ 22:04, 18 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I am involved in New Page Patrol and AfC; the ability to move pages to the draftspace without leaving a mainspace redirect has been helpful. I believe that my history of page moves while using the tool shows that I can use the tool appropriately and I am seeking to permanently obtain the right. — Mhawk10 (talk) 18:40, 26 February 2022 (UTC) — Mhawk10 (talk) 18:40, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Noting that consensus is to keep such redirects. My two cents is that if consensus is against deleting such redirects then they should not be suppressed. Am I wrong? casualdejekyll 18:18, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Mhawk10 is referring to redirects from mainspace to the draftspace, not the other way around. DanCherek (talk) 18:22, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. Cheeky. (And by that I mean I should get more sleep before editing Wikipedia, hah) casualdejekyll 00:21, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Just to clarify, I am aware that Draftspace redirects to the mainspace should not be speedy deleted. The reason I am requesting this is that I’d prefer not to leave a redirect for someone else to clean up when I move things from the mainspace to the draftspace. I’ve patrolled ~1200 pages in the past year, so this situation does not only come up infrequently. — Mhawk10 (talk) 16:27, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:PhotographyEdits

I have currently around 3700 edits on the English Wikipedia. I have done a whole bunch of page moves over the last year and also made requests for technical moves. I also and engaged in various move discussions. I would like to be granted this right to help out other users with moving pages and be able to do technical moves myself. PhotographyEdits (talk) 21:07, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:DanCherek

I review reports at CopyPatrol where the bot sometimes flags cut-and-paste moves. When I come one of those and the move otherwise seems valid, I revert the edits and then post at WP:RM/TR so a page mover can carry out the intended move. This happened earlier today at Direct Factory Outlet: editrevertRM/TRmove. I'm requesting the page mover right because it would be convenient if I was able to fix these myself. User:Terasail

I monitor Category:Wikipedia files requiring renaming & Duplicate file names and rename files when they meet WP:FMV/W. suppressredirect would be useful for limited use files for WP:PMRC#10 so that I don't leave unused redirects. Terasail[✉️] 04:36, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Because it looks an awful lot like an attempt to conceal the fact that you had a previous request denied (which, for the record, wouldn't work - not only does a bot post messages logging that sort of thing, but admins will check anyway). firefly ( t · c ) 19:10, 20 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
