The Alfa Special was a South African Formula 1 racing car, created by Peter de Klerk. It participated in only two Formula One World Championship races: the 1963 and 1965 South African Grands Prix.
De Klerk had some experience as a Lotus technician and decided to prepare a car, simply called Alfa Special, to run the home Grand Prix as well as the various off-calendar national races in South Africa.
History[edit]
Peter de Klerk was the mechanic of the first South African Formula 1 champions: Syd van der Vyver and Ernie Pieterse. In the early 1960s, De Klerk also raced an occasional car borrowed from his friend Pat Phillips. Then, with the help of Phillips, he built a car, the Alfa Special, which he was going to compete in the South African Formula 1. It was an unusual idea because the most common cars in this series were Alfa Romeo, Borgward or Ford. Exceptions like the LDS were rare.
The Alfa Special was based on a Lotus 21. The car had a typical design and resembled a cigar[1]. De Klerk used a modified 1497 cc unit from the Alfa Romeo "Giulietta" model to power his car. The car was completed in early 1962 and received positive feedback.
The first race in which de Klerk started his model was the Autumn Trophy in April 1962, which he finished in fourth place. In 1963, financially supported by Otello "Jack" Nucci, he made his Formula One debut, qualifying in 16th place at the South African Grand Prix without finishing the race. In 1964, de Klerk finished second in South Africa's Formula 1, behind John Love. Overall, de Klerk scored eight victories in this series. In 1965, he took part in the South African Grand Prix for the second time, in which he was tenth. In 1966, de Klerk stopped starting his car and started using a Brabham.
