MTV 90s is an international music television channel from Paramount International Networks featuring music videos from the 1990s. MTV 90s replaced MTV Rocks in Europe, on 5 October 2020 at 05:00 CET.[1] This channel is available in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and North Asia.

History[edit]

Before the launch[edit]

On November 30, 2004, VH1 Classic Europe featured a programme with 1990s music videos, "Smells Like The 90s", after the launch of this channel. Since December 2005, VH1 Classic Europe featured thematic programmes with clips from the 1990s:

  • The 90s Alternative - Alternative and obscure videos from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Chilled - Laid back and chill-out classics from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Danced - Classic dance and electronic tracks from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Partied - Party hits from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Popped - Pop music from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Rocked - Rock music from the 1990s.
  • The 90s Years - A selection of music videos from one particular year of the 1990s.

On July 1, 2012, VH1 Classic Europe cancelled these programmes. In April 2015, VH1 Classic Europe started a marathon of 90s music videos - "Nothing But The 90s", which was released every three weeks - on weekends. On January 9, 2018, another programme appeared on VH1 Classic Europe - "90s Boys vs 90s Girls". At the end of June 2018, VH1 Classic Europe discontinued "90s Boys vs 90s Girls", and in September of that year, "Nothing But The 90s" was also cancelled. The last edition of "Smells Like The 90s" was shown on September 19, 2020, in connection with MTV 80s arrival on replacement to the VH1 Classic Europe.

The last video from songs of the 90s, which was shown on VH1 Classic Europe was "Only Happy When It Rains" by Garbage.

Pop-up channel and the launch[edit]

From May 27 to June 24, 2016, MTV 90s was broadcast as a temporary pop-up channel and was replacing the channel MTV Classic UK. Since October 5, 2020, channel MTV 90s broadcasts as a full channel (outside of UK and Ireland), having replaced MTV Rocks in Europe. The first video on MTV 90s was "I Will Always Love You" by Whitney Houston at 05:00 CET.

MTV goes back in time to return to a historic decade of the american popular music, britpop, europop and eurodance: girl-power and boybands, R&B and hip hop, house music and alternative rock. MTV 90s offers the best soundtracks, timeless songs No.1s in the world, great anthems, dances and array of music videos from known executors of the decade: Madonna, George Michael, Elton John, Prince, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Cher, Kylie Minogue, Tina Turner, Lisa Stansfield, Toni Braxton, Britney Spears, Ace of Base, Aqua, Spice Girls, Vengaboys, Take That, Backstreet Boys, Boyzone, Snap!, Dr. Alban, 2 Unlimited, Jamiroquai, Björk, Moby, The Prodigy, Roxette, Alanis Morissette, TLC, En Vogue, SWV, No Doubt, Garbage, The Cranberries, The Cardigans, Simply Red, Bryan Adams, R.E.M., Sting, Genesis, Bon Jovi, Guns N'Roses, Metallica, Aerosmith, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, U2, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lenny Kravitz, Oasis, Blur, Smashing Pumpkins, Green Day, The Offspring, among many many others. As with the rest of the MTV network globally following the release of Leaving Neverland, Michael Jackson is not present in rotation, with the exception of his duet with Janet Jackson "Scream".

Strips with the name of the song, album and artist are stylised in the same way that would have been used in the 1990s (the classical "The MTV strap").[2]

MTV 90s replaced MTV Music 24 in the Netherlands on 26 May 2021.[3] On 1 March 2021, MTV 90s expanded its broadcast area to the Middle East and North Africa through beIN Network.[4]

Other versions[edit]

As part of restructuring at Paramount Global UK & Australia, MTV 90s will replace MTV Base in the UK from 6am on March 31, 2022.[5]

The format[edit]

Since its launch, MTV 90s has been broadcasting in the format of the British music channel Now 90s. Unlike Now 90s, MTV 90s doesn't broadcast any announcements nor commercial advertising.

Since the launch, MTV 90s broadcasts in 16:9 SD. All videoclips have been digitized from old carriers. Broadcast of most of the music videos shot at 4:3 has been adapted with the small black sidewalls on the screen. Music videos translations is conducted thus, in what format the clip has been removed.
