On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.

How to use this page[edit]

What not to propose for discussion here[edit]

The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:

Stub templates
Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
Userboxes
Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
Speedy deletion candidates
If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
Policy or guideline templates
Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
Template redirects
List at Redirects for discussion.

Reasons to delete a template[edit]

  1. The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
  2. The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
  3. The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
  4. The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.

Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.

Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.

Listing a template[edit]

To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. The use of Twinkle (explained below) is strongly recommended, as it automates and simplifies these steps. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).

Step Instructions
I: Tag the template. Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:

Note:

  • If the template nominated is inline, do not add a newline between the TfD notice and the code of the template.
  • If the template to be nominated for deletion is protected, make a request for the TfD tag to be added, by posting on the template's talk page and using the {{editprotected}} template to catch the attention of administrators or Template editors.
  • For templates designed to be substituted, add <noinclude>...</noinclude> around the TfD notice to prevent it from being substituted alongside the template.
  • Do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Use an edit summary like
Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]]
    or
Nominated for merging; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]].
  • Before saving your edit, preview your edit to ensure the Tfd message is displayed properly.

Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with {{subst:Tfd|heading=discussion title}} or {{subst:Tfm|name of other template|heading=discussion title}} instead of the versions given above, replacing discussion title with the title you chose (but still not changing the PAGENAME code).

Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the TfD nomination, add {{Catfd|template name}} to the top of any categories that would be deleted as a result of the TfD, this time replacing template name with the name of the template being nominated. (If you instead chose a meaningful title for a multiple nomination, use {{Catfd|header=title of nomination}} instead.)

TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:

/* This template is being discussed in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy. Help reach a consensus at its entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2022_March_12#Template:template_name.css */
II: List the template at TfD. Follow this link to edit today's TfD log.

Add this text to the bottom of the page:

  • For deletion: {{subst:Tfd2|template name|text=Why you think the template should be deleted. ~~~~}}
  • For merging: {{subst:Tfm2|template name|other template's name|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

If the template has had previous TfDs, you can add {{Oldtfdlist|previous TfD without brackets|result of previous TfD}} directly after the Tfd2/Catfd2 template.

Use an edit summary such as
Adding [[Template:template name]].

Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ). Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ), plus one more in |with=. |with= does not need to be used, but should be the template that you want the other templates to be merged into. Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the Tfd2 template but before the text of your rationale:

{{subst:Catfd2|category name}}
III: Notify users. Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:

to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts.

Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases.

Consider adding any templates you nominate for TfD to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the TfD tag is not removed.

After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors[edit]

While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.

To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.

Notifying related WikiProjects[edit]

WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}} for this.

Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.

Notifying substantial contributors to the template[edit]

While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.

At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)

Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.

Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.

Twinkle[edit]

Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the posting and notification functions automatically, with fewer errors and missed steps than manual editing. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.

Discussion[edit]

Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.

People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.

Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.

Closing discussion[edit]

Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/Europe medical cases[edit]

Table of cases by country. Abandoned in March 2020. Nigej (talk) 16:16, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep The numbers of PCR-confirmed infections - a total of 1524 for all of Europe (including UK, Russia) as of 2020.03.06 - seems ridiculously small in hindsight, and in today's context of the order of 10,000 infections or so per day being ordinary in each of the big European countries as of mid February 2022. However, Europe has been one of the hardest hit regions of the world (probably because of the demographic profile with many elderly people), and the early phase of the pandemic remains an important part of comprehensive encyclopedic coverage. I think that an appropriate title change is needed, e.g. to Template:COVID-19 pandemic data/initial phase of Europe medical cases. Balashov, Yuxing & Zhu 2021 used the early phase of the pandemic (per country, around the world) as a detector of which national health agencies are most likely to have fabricated their data, so this official data for the early phase (curated by Wikipedians and Wikipedian methods) remains significant. Jonesey95, thank you for looking into this. Soccer squad template for a Polish 3rd division team. Not updated for many years and surely too low a level for a "current squad" navbox, with few blue links. Nigej (talk) 06:31, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:SSL[edit]

Unnecessary template that clutters up external links section of articles, and doesn't seem to link correctly to their profile on that website. No reason why we'd need this on sailing articles, which have their World Sailing profiles with the non-cluttered template Template:World Sailing (either directly, or via Wikidata sports links) Joseph2302 (talk) 12:30, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep: The function of this template is to show the Highest ranking in the worldwide Star Sailors League ranking list and the ranking per date of a specific sailor. In the World Sailing Template one can enter the WS identity number of a specific sailor. No ranking info! Therefor the SSL template gives additional information. You write that the template shows incorrect info. This is not true please check e.g. Bart Lambriex. The available links are to the Star Sailors League wikipage and to the SSL ranking website. Not to the exact page of the specific sailor. SSL ranking can be compared to the ATP Rankings. I agree that some improvements can be made to the template. Like less cluttering and maybe a direct link to the current SSL ranking database. The last mentioned improvement is however out of my programming skills league. But maybe someone can help out here.Dragon Genoa (talk) 12:46, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • No evidence that the Star Sailors League is important to justify this. And it didn't work on Eilidh McIntyre‎ where you added it, because she doesn't look to me listed anywhere on that website. And the fact that it's cumbersome and clutters up the bottom of the page is a reason to delete it- Template:World Sailing is a much better, and less obtrusive, external link. Joseph2302 (talk) 13:21, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well the template didn't link to that profile anyway, so my point stands. And those profile have very little useful information (just the rank at this one tournament), which is way less useful than the World Sailing Profile (which lists most of their tournament performances). Joseph2302 (talk) 14:00, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • That is what I explained earlier. The link goes to the wikipage an the other to the SSL webside. Just like the World Sailing template does not link to the actual info of the sailor. Also it does NOT relate to just one tournement. The SSL ranking is a continuous ranking off ALL sailors Worldwide over ALL regattas.Dragon Genoa (talk) 14:14, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment Clearly one issue is the way it looks. I think it needs to decide what it is. At the moment it's just as funny box hidden away in the "External links" section with an unnecessary icon and microscopically small text. Personally it looks to me as if its the sort of information that would normally go in the Infobox (although there could be a link too in the External links section). I'd have thought a few extra parameters in {{Infobox sailor}} would do the job. This whole Star Sailors League area is starting to look quite promotional and being in the infobox would perhaps be more suitable that an obtrusive box. Nigej (talk) 13:53, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I couldn't at all claim to be an expert. Depends to a certain extent what sort of system you're thinking of. Are you thinking of having a centralised database (or even extracting the data automatically) or whether you're happy editing all the articles individually each week. {{Infobox tennis biography}} shows how to go about the manual process (they have parameters highestsinglesranking and currentsinglesranking). I know Tennis are thinking about trying to automate this area, although I don't think they've made much progress, see WT:TENNIS#Rankings, which notes a system they use for Darts. See also {{Infobox snooker player/rankings}} for a relatively simple system, where a centralised system is used to store the current snooker rankings, using a cut-and-paste-and-a-bit-of-clever-editing approach. Nigej (talk) 14:36, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
To start with I would be happy to have just 4 "| SSL ranking date = ", "| SSL ranking role = ", "| SSL ranking = " and "SSL highest ranking = " parameters in Template:Infobox sailor. Then I can ask the guys from SSL to come up with an auto update mechanism.Dragon Genoa (talk) 15:04, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Or I can use the current Template:SSL as in coded User:Dragon Genoa/sandbox to make it a integrate it in Template:Infobox sailor. What do both of you think of this idea?Dragon Genoa (talk) 15:28, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I also have an issue with this template. This is not an external link template as it claims to be, but a table with manual values and no references that is placed in various places - Peter Burling (sailor) inside an infobox; Anne-Marie Rindom at the navbox section. I'm leaning delete as I don't see how these issues can be solved with this template. Also, come on. A template created in 2022 without documentation? --Gonnym (talk) 11:44, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCleanerMan, I've added the navbox to several of the pages that should have it. Other than its lack of use, what exactly is your issue with it? The poor coverage of non-human osteology on Wikipedia is a separate issue from the quality of the navbox per se, and my hope is that the creation of this navbox will facilitate their improvement by making the pages easier to find. • Delete a page that was created in the wrong namespace is not a reason for speedy deletion. The correct procedure for such cases is to move the page to the correct namespace, and then delete the redirect as a redirect left over from moving a page that was obviously created at the wrong title. Template:Article list[edit]

While I am generally a fan of Wikidata, I don't think this template is a good idea. There are a couple reasons:

  1. It basically makes the wikitext unreadable in navboxes, which will make it difficult to trivially update specific navboxes (to wit, "add to")
  2. Because it uses the wrapper template (generally a fine idea), it adds to the processing time of most uses, when (huge) navboxes are already often the cause of processing time issues.
  3. Because it fetches info from Wikidata, this also adds to the time needed to render and use navboxes on arbitrary pages.

I accept that it might be valuable to have a solution to the 'redirect in navboxes' problem and have something to that effect in my own CSS (that colors such links red and styles italic), but I don't think this is the way to go. Izno (talk) 21:54, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Keep because I genuinely believe this template/module has tangible benefits. (Please clarify, Izno, if you are nominating the module too or just the wrapper template?) It is currently in a limited trial after which I will initiate discussion before deploying further. Deletion would prevent this process. For those unfamiliar, the benefits are:

  • Automatic sorting of links alphabetically
  • Automatic update of link when article is moved
  • Automatic removal of link if article is deleted
  • Automatic display of link if article is created. For example, you could load up QIDs of all lighthouses in Tanzania, and if/when those articles are created they will display on Template:Lighthouses in Tanzania, without any further action.

I accept that it makes the wikitext less readable, but I hope people will agree that this slight downside is outweighed by advantages above :) This method may be too soon for the enwiki community, but I suspect it is the way that all linking will happen sometime in the future because of its robustness and stability — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 22:42, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The module as well, the template doesn't exist without the module. Izno (talk) 22:56, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Keep Concur with MSGJ. cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 00:47, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I think that there are some good ideas behind this template/module, namely making it easier to keep lists of articles in navboxes up to date and, optionally, alphabetized. Using Wikidata IDs instead of article names makes the template basically unusable, however. If it could somehow perform the sorting and link-checking functions while preserving article names, perhaps with maintenance categories to track red links and page moves, that might be usable. I don't know if this means that the template should be kept because with some editing it can be saved, or if it needs to be wiped out and rethought. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:09, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your comments. I do appreciate the concerns about wikicode readability, although I disagree that it makes the template "unusable". I have been including the article name in HTML comment (please see Template:Lighthouses in Tanzania for example) which certainly makes it easier to remove a link which is misplaced. There is also a helper module to automatically convert article names into QIDs and add the HTML comment. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 08:45, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Restrict to WP-space and talk pages. Per Jonesey95, it isn't very readable or accessible, so will discourage participation in Wikipedia, reducing the editor population, and potentially relagating Wikipedia to becoming Nupedia or Citizendium (ie. moribund) if this were to be rolled out across the board as being suggested -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 05:31, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

March 8[edit]

Template:Birth name[edit]

Was being used on two articles, Bill Clinton and John E. Arnold. For the former, it created an unnecessary notes section which was redundant given the fact that Clinton's name change is mentioned in the first article section about his early life. For Arnold, just the reference is enough. Really unnecessary to have a template just to make note of a person's name. The same could be said if this was used on articles about women who changed their last names after getting married. Would be pointless considering how many women do change their name after getting married and such transclusions would be overkill. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:14, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: This would be the same case for {{'s}} which is used after italics. Once could argue that the characters 's can just be set directly and thus removing the transclusions. Do you have any rough statistics as to how many articles use "ne" directly [and could also be a transclusion? (I'm not suggesting we transclude, but wondering about the numbers.)] — DaxServer (t · c) 21:35, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Comment: I created the template in 2019 after a couple of similar route diagrams I also created were moved from the rail transport article to templates by another user, so I proceeded to follow what I thought was the convention for this route, but the other ones have now been deleted, and in the end, the diagram could have been always in the main article because they are not used elsewhere, so I would support deleting this template, but keeping the diagram/contents in the article. By used by their main templates, I meant being trancluded directing users to test out potential changes without causing major disruption to the main template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 20:02, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I think your probably right. I've nominated a lot that I think were clearly of no use, so that at some point we hopefully can see "the wood for the trees". Maybe we're getting to that stage now, although when you look at a lot of the articles there's even more "culling" to be done there. Nigej (talk) 21:15, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
WikiCleanerMan and Nigej, please provide a valid TFD reason. • Keep all - the templates are normally transcluded into the articles on the electoral district and any notable candidates, render somewhat different information depending on which article they're in, and are part of a very large system of templates (with about 12,000 transclusions for the base template) ensuring consistency of presentation across Canadian election articles. The table in the main article does not include information on vote swing, vote change from the previous election, and campaign expenditures (which wasn't available when I started making these but should be by now). Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 18:36, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete all The information is already on the respective article as part of the article. No need for more single-use templates. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:13, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Delete all as they are not transcluded. If they do happen to be transcluded by the end of this TfD in only 1 article, then subst and delete. Gonnym (talk) 08:21, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. The fact that the information is already present in the election article doesn't invalidate these templates in and of itself, because the information also has to be present in the articles about each individual electoral district (tracking its historical election results across the entirety of its existence) and the MLA who represented it (tracking his or her electoral record across the duration of his or her career in politics) — and the entire purpose of using templates, instead of hardcoded tables, in each pair of relevant articles, is so that Wikipedians can't mess stuff up by editing the tables in contradictory ways. The lack of transclusions on this batch wasn't because the templates are inherently "useless", it was simply because the process of actually applying them to the relevant articles for their intended purpose was never completed — but that has now been done, and each of these templates now has two transclusions each, on the electoral district and on the MLA who won the vote, exactly as they're meant to be used. Bearcat (talk) 14:42, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it hasn't been completed exactly. The 2019 electoral officer's report has more info on voter turnout and on campaign expenditures and limits, and as is to be expected the official results differ from the initially posted results in a lot of cases. I've updated Stratford-Keppoch just now and will do the other 5 later today, plus there's the other 22 districts (each with at least 2 transclusions, more often 3 since this was a protest vote election and most incumbents were not re-elected) to do. Much easier to do these corrections on 27 templates and transclude to the 54 or more articles than to update each article individually. Plus, the CEO reports are available going back to 1966, if anyone's feeling ambitious. Ivanvector (Talk/Edits) 15:07, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I meant "completed" in the sense of "the templates have been added to the pages that they were meant to be added to", not in the sense of "all the information that could possibly be placed in the template is already there". After all, the beauty of templates is that if you change the template after it's been transcluded into articles, the change automatically propagates to the relevant articles through the template. • In the previous discussion, I said

Subst and delete I've read through all of the linked discussions and not seen any actual valid arguments as to why RDTs should be stored in separate pages, only a ton of "we've always done it this way", arguments that could also be applied in favor of keeping templates like {{cite doi}}/{{cite pmid}}/{{cite isbn}} (which were all deprecated or deleted), and an apparent desire to own the content of RDTs by deliberately making them even harder for unfamiliar users to edit (in the 2016 Teahouse discussion). * Pppery * it has begun... 04:28, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

My opinion has not changed since, and I still feel that this and all its brethren should be substituted and deleted. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:46, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Reasons for keeping this route code in separate templates are detailed in my comment above, and in the previous discussions. I welcome a wider discussion about those reasons, but I do not think that a single TFD is a good place to have a discussion about the validity of an approach used by ten thousand templates. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:24, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. It's a well-established principle that route diagram templates are maintained in the template namespace and that many if not most will be single-use with their parent article. If there needs to be an RfC to reify this outcome (or overturn it) then we should figure that out, but as Jonesy95 said this isn't the place to do it. • Delete per nom. * Pppery * it has begun... 14:45, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep. A navbox has significant advantages that make it distinctly more useful than a category. a nav box is highly useful in its own right for some purposes, such as, for example, topics that are highly relevant to social concerns and to public policy, such as this one, which is indeed highly relevant to major societal issues. --Sm8900 (talk) 17:15, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your claim that navboxes have a significant advantage over categories when it comes to navigation, after all, they are called navboxes for a reason. But this basically copies all the articles in the category. The major social issue is not of concern with this nomination. Completely irrelevant. Template:Lynching in the United States is a far more useful navbox for one reason, it provides easier navigation you can't get from its relevant categories. The U.S. navbox is far more useful than this one. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 18:40, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:U.S. Supreme Court composition 1812–1823[edit]

Unused completely or used only in a talk page. The rest of the set was deleted here. This style of templates was not wanted. Gonnym (talk) 06:31, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Well, before doing mass deletes of a large number of templates, especially those related to a high-popularity page or pages relating to a subject like the Supreme Court of the United States and cases decided there, might break who knows how many pages. May I suggest the following: There is a "feature" - I'm not sure what it's called - where someone can receive a notification when someone refers to them on their own talk page. Now I may be completely wrong, but, if it does do that, put these flags on those pages, there's only what, about 10, 20 of them and see over some period, a week or 30 days, some reasonable number dependent on traffic, and if no notifications occur then you've proven your case and I'd have no objections. My concern is that dozens or potentially hundreds of pages are broken because these are removed. Sure, there are no direct references on articles, but as someone who has edited hundreds of templates, especially to add a feature or correct something, I am aware that some templates indirectly invoke others through macro substitution, meaning one template references another as a parameter rather than a link, and the linkage is programmatically created at page rendering time, not when the page was composed, built, or published, and thus no database references are present. That is what worries me; you make one otherwise innocuous change, and it cascades to break hundreds of pages.
As I see it, this many pages on a related subject must have been created because someone (or multiple people) felt they needed something to be inserted or calculated, to put on an article page. If it can be reasonably shown doing this doesn't break something else, then I say fine, round them up and put them against the wall to be shot, err I mean deleted. It is possible it could be that these were used for some purpose, then deprecated in favor of replacing them with something else, but never bothered to delete it or ask for it to be deleted; that's also a case where it will not cause a problem.
Let's not find out through excessive zeal that we break things.
I have another suggestion. Copy the text of these to the same page in the Drafts namespace. Then blank out the template except for having it put a huge jarring message block telling the reader this page uses something that was thought to be unused, and they should contact you immediately so this can be fixed. If nobody at all complains after a month or whatever is reasonable, then yank these pages.
Maybe I've gone on too long, but I just don't want to see something unexpected get broken.

"Understanding of things by me is only made possible by people — who read my comments — like you."

Thank you.

I suggest deletion, since it's unclear how linking directly to these countries would be appropriate for Template:Foreign relations of the United States, and their US relation articles are already part of the template. • Pinging still-active previous participants Nick-D, Dimadick, Orlady and Chrism. --Paul_012 (talk) 10:39, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • My previous Merge !vote still stands, for the same reasoning as it did back then. - Chrism would like to hear from you 10:52, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      • Chrism, how would you suggest the merge be carried out? It wouldn't be appropriate to include individual countries in the US foreign relations template per WP:BIDIRECTIONAL. I guess one thing that could be done instead would be to add an asterisk to each of these countries' entries in that template, plus a link to Major non-NATO ally (which is missing and should be added anyway). This wouldn't merge any content from this template, though. --Paul_012 (talk) 20:33, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete If the actual effect is listing these countries' US relations twice, then it is simply redundant. Dimadick (talk) 12:07, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete As noted it fundamentally a poor topic for a Navbox. A navbox is there to aid navigation. Are readers of the Japan article really going to want to jump to another country article because they're both non-NATO allies of the United States? Also gives a very US-centred view of the world. Why not templates with lists of allies of France or the UK or China, etc. We'd end up with country articles containing countless navboxes of this type. Nigej (talk) 15:48, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rewrite into a Cold-War-era Western bloc template that doesn't need to repeat the NATO countries by just including "NATO" as an entry -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 04:57, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't quite see how that would work, seeing as major non-NATO ally is an element of US foreign policy and not a description of the Cold-War Western blocs. --Paul_012 (talk) 20:33, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Shin Japan Heroes Universe[edit]

Entirely reliant on WP:SYN. Fico Puricelli is jumping the gun. It’s only been recently confirmed that “Shin Japan Heroes Universe” is a collaborative project. It has not been confirmed whether this is an ongoing film series or a shared cinematic universe. The only source I come across that reported neutrally on this project without jumping to conclusions is Crunchyroll (1).

The only thing that has been confirmed is that the project will focus on “merchandise, special events and tie-ins” (2). Thus far, details are scant but will be revealed later this year (3). Therefore, this nav-temp should be deleted until more details emerge as to what this collaborative project is.

Keep in mind, Toho and Kahara launched collaborative projects in the past, such as GODZILLA X EVANGELION (3), a line of merchandise, and GODZILLA VS. EVANGELION (4), a 4-D ride at Universal Studios Japan. For all we know so far, this could be something similar rather than suddenly making these unrelated films (owned by separate studios) cinematically canon. Again, which the announcement did not confirm. Armegon (talk) 18:16, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:ICC Women's Associate player of the year[edit]

Cricket Navboxes with only one entry. Really no use for navigation. Nigej (talk) 14:06, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:India Squad 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup[edit]

Generally consensus is that these sort of "squad" Navboxes for a particular event should be restricted to those teams that have done particularly well (winner or medalist). Producing these before the event finishes seem to go against that principle. Nigej (talk) 14:43, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep all There was a previous discussion with the consensus to keep them all for the men's tournament, so the same should apply to the women's tournament too. Lugnuts Fire Walk with Me 07:40, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all as per the previous TfD for the men's equivalent templates. There's only 8 teams in this competition, and so being selected for this competition is a noteworthy event, and the templates connecting these players are relevant. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:59, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all in line with Men's CWC and Women's and Men's FIFA World Cup: this is the top level of competition and happens every 4 years. Selection to these squads is significant and these templates are a useful form of navigation. Spike 'em (talk) 10:01, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all. These navboxes fail the criteria of WP:NAVBOX. 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup squads is the only means of navigating players in relation to this tournament we need. Having decorative navigation templates for all teams for all tournaments simply generates clutter – some of these players have over a dozen squad templates! Per nom, only the members of the winning team are likely to have the tournament squad as a reason to be closely associated with each other but even then we're really just hindering navigation by having so many of them for dominant teams (Australia in this case), so I really don't see the case for them then either. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:34, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment My concern with these is that I'm not convinced that they're at all useful for navigation. At Mithali Raj#External links you have to click "show" on Links to Mithali Raj-related articles, then click "show" again on India squads, scroll down, click "show" for the third time, on India squad – 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup and finally you're shown a list of names and you can then click on one of those names to get to another article. It all looks like WP:TCREEP to me. Nigej (talk) 10:50, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That's exactly what it is; and it applies equally to the other stuff mentioned by others. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:52, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The existence of all the entries in Category:Women's Cricket World Cup squad navigational boxes show that there is an implied consensus that these navboxes are useful. Spike 'em (talk) 12:11, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is a completely fallacious argument. There is no logical inference to be drawn from the existence of a category. wjematherplease leave a message... 12:23, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The existence of all the entries in Category:Women's Cricket World Cup squad navigational boxes. I'm not using the existence of a category as an argument, but the fact that its members show that every single team entering a Women's World cup has a navbox. If you want all of them deleted, create an RfC to explicitly prohibit these for all sports, as there have been many related TfDs which have consensus to keep similar content. Spike 'em (talk) 12:31, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, this is a wide issue on how templates for sports competitors are used, so it would make sense to be discussed in a general setting, rather than trying to delete a few templates here (which is inconsistent with the previous discussion from a couple of years ago, which said these types of templates should be kept). It's not WP:OSE to refer to a previous TfD on almost identical templates... Joseph2302 (talk) 12:36, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You are inferring usefulness from existence – to repeat, that is a completely fallacious argument. Yes, proliferation of these navboxes is such that centralised discussion is probably needed to draw clearer boundaries than currently exist. wjematherplease leave a message... 15:51, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all as per the previous TfD. I understand the criticisms of the navboxes, but surely that should be dealt with via a discussion about all the templates, as before? Otherwise a weird hole will be left specifically for the 2022 World Cup, when all other major men's and women's tournaments retain the squad navboxes. Mpk662 (talk) 12:19, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, however discussion would unquestionably be met with complaints that they should be discussed separately (as groups). Anyway, "other stuff" is not a reason to oppose cleaning up these first. wjematherplease leave a message... 12:27, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment We should wait until after the tournament. And only keep the navbox for the team that wins. And if the other teams' navboxes are still around, then they should be renominated because those templates would represent cruft since they would be non-notable in terms of having a navbox since they didn't win. And we keep navboxes for teams that win torunaments/championships. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:22, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Not true, we have navboxes for every men's and women's FIFA (association football) and Cricket World Cup squad in recent times. This is a wider issue that needs a proper centralised discussion/RFC about which templates should be kept/deleted, rather than randomly picking a few templates and shouting delete at them. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:29, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. We should have an RFC about this. Because there is some confusion about what should be kept or not kept. But a larger issue seems to not be what should be kept or be deleted, but also the issue of creation. Users who create templates for all team squads in tournaments are doing so in good faith, but there is a colossal amount for non-winning teams across all sports not just for the ones nominated here. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:36, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep all Previous consensus was to keep these navboxes, and until there's consensus otherwise they should be kept. More than happy for a discussion to be had on this though. Rugbyfan22 (talk) 18:49, 8 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Saltillocap[edit]

Unused character template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:06, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose Although it may be unused currently, it forms a casing pair with {{saltillo}}, which is used. The reason for using these templates rather than simply typing the characters (or using char-insert) is that with some fonts, it may be difficult for editors to distinguish the saltillo from the ASCII apostrophe, and therefore difficult to proofread an article. Also, people who prefer Unicode periodically go through and 'clean up' the articles, replacing the templates with the characters, so whether the template is used may ebb back and forth. — kwami (talk) 23:10, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Lang-mis[edit]

This template originally speedy-nominated but apparently something about that broke or disturbed something at WP:CfD; see User talk:Trappist the monk § Help!. So, nominating here. This template is not used. This template is patently wrong. Hiberno-English is not a language that has been coded by the ISO 639-3 custodians. Because of that, using mis (the ISO 639-3 code for uncoded languages) is inappropriate – Hiberno-English is not the only uncoded language that en.wiki recognizes.
Trappist the monk (talk) 23:38, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Rewrite get rid of Hiberno-English and rewrite it for specifiable language, link to ISO 639:m and the missing language table entry as the language link gloss for why this is "mis".
 [[{{{langlink|{{{lang}}}}}}|{{{lang}}}]]<sup>[[ISO 639:m#mis|?]]</sup>: {{{1}}}
so that it works with any missing language, and recategorize to only lang-x templates -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 03:18, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment it would be useful to standardize the format of missing language presentations, when they are written out in articles for the same functionality as lang-x templates, so rewriting this template to do so would rationalize all the missing language glosses with standard formatting consistent with languages that are coded in ISO 639 for which we have a standard format for. -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 03:21, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
When would that be used? When formatting text in a language that doesn't have an ISO code, there's no need to advertise (even in a tiny superscript) that the language hasn't got an ISO code: that's completely irrelevant to any text you'll be writing. If you take away the superscript, then the result is similar to what people would write out manually anyway: instead of writing [[Fooian language|Fooian]]: {{lang|mis|bar}}, they would now write {{lang-mis|lang=Fooian|langlink=Fooian language|bar}}. That's a tad more complicated, but it's got one small advantage: it may allow for some monitoring, so that if an ISO code eventually gets created, it will be easier to track down those uses and replace them accordingly. – Uanfala (talk) 23:58, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Then we could just drop the question mark, and format it as you wrote, allowing for RTL formatting from {{lang}} etc. Which would allow tracking, and consistent formatting -- 65.92.246.142 (talk) 16:51, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Laser Types

[edit]

This is only directly used in a half dozen navboxes, which really don't need a specific template to contain a half dozen links. Subst and delete is the recommendation here. Izno (talk) 19:42, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Delete without subst. Template:Lasers should handle laser types. Gonnym (talk) 06:58, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Works for me. Izno (talk) 08:10, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
This is used in various laser navbox templates, such as Template:Gas lasers. Blindly deleting without subst is not an option. I reverted the ill-advised change in formatting, which affected all the pages on which it is included. I think this proposal needs more thought, and perhaps a review of all the laser templates. I'm no fan of navboxes, but using a template to keep common text the same across a set of navboxes is a sensible use of the template feature. --Srleffler (talk) 03:36, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I know that it is used in various laser navbox templates, I firmly oppose that design which is why I said "Delete without subst". Template:Lasers is the correct place for those links. Gonnym (talk) 07:15, 1 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete Encouraging bad habits. Nigej (talk) 19:07, 22 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Nigej: Like {{xt}}? Not allowed in project space. Also there are even limited exceptions to the MOS rule. When you are directly quoting, for example, or you're quoting a text in Russian, which uses this symbol regularly, it is even on their keyboard. Replacing with "No." in a Cyrillic text alleged to have come from the Soviet Union would make no sense. Psiĥedelisto (talkcontribs) please always ping! 14:20, 23 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep—a template does not need to follow the MOS. Plenty of our templates are made for talk pages and project pages. Can you point to where templates are excluded from following the MoS? Gonnym (talk) 09:39, 27 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Gonnym I believe that it is in the first sentence of the Manual of Style; This Manual of Style (MoS or MOS) is the style manual for all English Wikipedia articles (though provisions related to accessibility apply across the entire project, not just to articles). (emphasis mine) As there is no concern here regarding the accessibility of the template, I think that this template is excluded from the MoS, similar to {{tq}}. ? EpicPupper (he/him | talk) 19:35, 3 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:33, 24 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment - why not just add a namespace check that displays a warning if used in an article, like {{tq}} does? After all, WP:MOS is clear that besides accessibility issues, it only applies to articles, and {{&numero}} doesn't violate MOS:ACCESS. I don't see why it should be deleted just for MOS reasons, though I guess an argument that it's also unnecessary for discussions could be made. eviolite (talk) 03:43, 28 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
