  • I’m rather amazed at the lack of organization features of the media library. I was at a loss when I discovered I could not even make a basic directory structure. The only option is to dump everything into 1 folder or automatically sort by year/month; really?! Searching on the subject, the only solutions I found involve installing a 3rd party plugin or developing one myself. Seriously, how is basic organization not built in?!

Is it just me or is this just nuts? Is there something I’m missing?

  • You’re not missing anything. That’s just “the way it is”. It started out like that right back at the start, and hasn’t changed since. The way it works is still functional, so that’s the most likely reason for it not being updated or changed. There’s also the fact that if it did change, a whole bunch of people woudl want it back to how it was, and a bigger bunch of people would say that it’s doen the wrong away again, and should be changed to a differnt way (you can’t please everone).

Like you said, there’s plugins that can change the way it works, so I’d recommend looking into those if you do want to change the way that the uploads are stored.

So the cumbersome mess of a media library is left as is because its functional? There’s already 1 sorting option to choose from so why not add a few more? If folks don’t like the new options, they can simply not use them. The Gutenburg editor ticked a lot of folks off when it was launched, but they released it anyway.

Leaving something so basic up to plugin devs seems like a cop-out by the WP devs. You don’t see major operating systems shipped without a built-in file manager. If people always settled for functional rather than improved, the internet wouldn’t exist because sending things through the post office is functional!
