Call for research proposals to partner with the Calm app

The goal of this call is to find investigators conducting research related to Calm’s priorities and develop partnerships to advance the scientific evidence for Calm. Partnerships may include discounted or free memberships for study participants and access to participants’ app-usage data.

The proposed research must be related to the following priorities:

  1. Engagement strategies to improve adherence to the Calm app
    1. Identify and evaluate the impact of integrating evidence-based behavioral strategies within the Calm app on user adherence (i.e., adaptive trial designs)
    2. Big data analyses of existing Calm data
      1. High-frequency time-series analyses using Calm app-usage data
      2. Machine learning/AI models of Calm usage patterns over time
  2. Evaluate the impact of using Calm on mental and physical health outcomes in a variety of populations. We have a particular interest in children’s and/or health disparities research
    1. Testing the feasibility of Calm use with populations not yet tested
    2. Testing efficacy of Calm with populations and outcomes not yet tested.
    3. Exploring the optimal dose of Calm to improve mental and physical health outcomes
    4. Exploring mechanisms through which Calm meditations and/or other Calm components (e.g., Daily Move, Sleep Stories, Calm Music) improves mental and physical health
  3. Evaluate process and outcomes measures in workplaces using Calm
    1. We are most interested in productivity, return on investment, and burnout
  4. Conducting trials that include comprehensive multi-modal measurements beyond self-report (e.g., neurophysiological, biomarkers)

Calm’s Scientific Advisory Board will review applications and invite the strongest applicants to submit an official proposal.

Investigators must have:

  • A strong research team, including a statistician, with experience conducting behavioral research, preferably mHealth interventions
  • An affiliation with a US institution with an IRB that will approve the study
  • Funding necessary to support the study

We recommend that applicants review the published literature related to Calm and mHealth interventions to assist in the development of their proposals (i.e., adding to the science/literature).

GET IN TOUCH

Apply to do research with Calm. If we are interested in your idea, you could receive free or reduced rate memberships and access to de-identified objective user data for consenting participants.

Submit Your Application

Scientific Advisory Board reviews applications monthly. Please submit your application by the 2nd Wednesday of the month and the SAB will be in touch.
