Integrated Annual Report 2020Sustainability
Throughout our operations we strive to reduce our carbon footprint through a combination of resource optimisation, behavioural changes and technology innovation. This has included a 38% reduction in CO2 emissions per unit of data traffic in 2020, as our investment in more energy-efficient, hybrid and renewable network equipment helped to mitigate the environmental impact of greater data use by our customers. We share our industry’s ambition to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and participate in the GSMA’s initiatives in support of this pledge.
We believe it is our responsibility to assist the communities we serve, and direct social engagements include the VEON Digital Entrepreneurship initiative and the Digital Skills & Literacy programme. We also make our mobile AI technology available to community projects such as Project Liza that locates missing people, Motorica that helps children adapt to prosthetic limbs, and for medical diagnostics at a world leading hospital.
