court cases?[edit]

HI! I want to write about this court case called McNally vs Regina, because it was very influential on sex and consent law surrounding trans people. However, I am not sure the Wikipedia customs about court cases! Many really interesting cases don't have pages. What exactly makes a case notable? Thank you so much! Heromagnus1 (talk) 23:05, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I am aware, there's no specific notability guideline for court cases, so you'd be going off the general notability guideline, which amounts to having multiple non-routine, in-depth, independent sources with editorial oversight and identifiable authors on the case itself. —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 23:12, 5 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Heromagnus1 If the case has been the subject of discussion in mainstream news, law journals, or books by reputable publishers (particularly academic textbooks), you might have sufficient sources for an article.
What case is it? Please give a more specific reference, "McNally v R" is too vague. We might be able to do a quick source search and give you more specific advice. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 10:31, 6 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Heromagnus1: This would appear to be R v McNally [2013] EWCA Crim 1051. A quick Google search found a few mentions in journals and news sources. It appears to have been one of the initial three cases in the UK which set precedence for "gender fraud". I've certainly seen articles for less important cases. I'm not prepared to thoroughly investigate sources, but my inclination is that the subject would pass notability. Please be very mindful of the biographies of living persons policy on this subject. – Reidgreg (talk) 21:43, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you all so much!! I really appreciate your support and I'll go ahead and start making the page. Heromagnus1 (talk) 19:58, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Right,
1. Could you perhaps have said that in your opening question? Being clear is important
2. Wikipedia is not censored. Toy tanks exist. They are notable. Notability is not temporary. There is no reason to remove them from the Toy article that fits with Wikipedia's current guidelines. casualdejekyll 22:34, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We did not have toy guns in the house. I came home one day to find my daughter and friends running around the yard with Barbie dolls bent at the waist so that they were holding the torso and 'shooting' each other with the legs. David notMD (talk) 15:13, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sounds like buying your daughter some toy guns is in order. (Not that I'm commenting on your parenting or anything, for all I know this story probably happened years and years ago) casualdejekyll 17:40, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Heck, we used random sticks - or even our fingers - as guns. Link a draft page to WikiData[edit]

Hello! I'm trying to add a wikidata infobox to my draft on Marianne Lederer (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Marianne_Lederer). I now the wikidata exist with the number Q15438360 (https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q15438360#sitelinks-wikipedia), but I cannot seem to insert it. I've read these help pages https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikidata and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_person/Wikidata but I cannot figure out how to do this in the draft. Does the draft have to be published before I can do it? I work in the visual editor and have tried in source editing too Thank you! Paristolken (talk) 14:29, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Images which include an advertisement for the photographer watermarked on them[edit]

This picture has a watermark on it that advertises the photographer and his website. I didn't delete it because it IS a really great picture, but I'm asking if that watermark is an acceptable element when it's on the Venice article. Alternately, would it be permissible to crop that top 3% of the photo and use that one instead? Fred Zepelin (talk) 16:36, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Other approaches would be to leave the Commons version as it is, but to display it in articles with the top 3% cropped; and to edit the Commons version to remove the watermark (which in this particular case would be very easy). Maproom (talk) 17:23, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Maproom: Thanks for the reply. How do I display in articles with the top cropped? I can't find any help page on that. Fred Zepelin (talk) 18:41, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I had difficulty finding comprehensible help on it, and created (by trial and error) this page with some working examples. Maproom (talk) 08:50, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

An article with few sources and links[edit]

local political groups / Few sources and links

Hello, I'm new to Wikipedia and would like to publish an article about a small youth politics group in my local area. The problem is that the only sources that I have are from school newspapers (and I am not sure are considered reputable sources of information) which are all physical copies and nothing digital I can link to as my source. Is there any way I can still publish an article like this? Would I have to upload the physical copies too somewhere? Or should I contact my local news station and convince them to publish articles about this ? thank you Cederwoodandroses (talk) 18:19, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Cederwoodandroses: Are you connected or affiliated with the group in any way? — Bsoykatalk 18:22, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I think so. All I do is publish their statements in my school newspaper and write columns about them but that's it. Cederwoodandroses (talk) 18:26, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Cederwoodandroses (ec) Hello and welcome to the Teahouse. Sources do not need to be anywhere online so that is not an issue. However, I regret to say that I don't think the group that you mention would merit a Wikipedia article at this time. It must receive significant coverage in independent reliable sources that have a reputation of fact checking and editorial control- that sounds unlikely for a school newspaper. I would also suggest that you review the special Wikipedia definition of a notable organization to see if this group meets it- though just based on what you say here, I don't think it would. However, I would encourage you to edit in other areas of the encyclopedia. 331dot (talk) 18:23, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright thank you so much. I will review this. Cederwoodandroses (talk) 18:30, 9 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 • For future reference 331dot, school newspapers vary greatly in quality and scope. The student newspaper at my alma mater was essentially a noticeboard for various school-related information ("the fencing club will meet at 10 on Thursday", "don’t forget to renew your student badge before September 20", etc.), with the occasional humorous / polemic opinion pieces from the "editors"; I suppose this is the standard for most student newspaper, and obviously unacceptable for almost any Wikipedia claim. On the other hand, the Mancunion is about as serious as the average local UK newspaper (or at least used to be a decade or so ago). (Here, the OP is apparently able to publish whatever they like, so it is probably not one of the highest-quality newspapers.) TigraanClick here for my talk page ("private" contact) 10:20, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
 • Tigraan Thank you; I am aware that school newspapers can possibly have the rigor needed to be used as source(for example the The Harvard Crimson is pretty good), but I got the sense that wasn't the case here. 331dot (talk) 10:26, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for stating (on your user page) that you're being paid to write this, Bsquizer. You're welcome to cite sources in Mongolian, or indeed other languages, if they're reliable. Your problem then will be waiting for a reviewer who can read Mongolian well enough to determine (i) whether the sources say what they're cited as saying, and (ii) whether the sources are reliable. -- Hoary (talk) 07:30, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Where to get proper reference links/etc.[edit]

Hi, my name is Matt Barachko. I'm the lead singer of the band, The UV Sound, and I wanted to try and publish a Wikipedia page so that our Google search results appear more cleanly to users. The only problem is that we have no articles written about us (hopefully we will someday), so I'm trying to figure out ways that I can have more valid sources to use so that my article on our band has a better chance at becoming published. I understand we would probably have to have more publicity first but there usually seems to be walkarounds to these sorts of things. Thank you for any help! Theuvsound (talk) 07:27, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Theuvsound, the band must demonstrably satisfy Wikipedia:Notability (music) before an article can be created. There is no workaround, walkaround, or surfboardaround. (And no, Wikipedia's gatekeepers do not take baksheesh.) I do understand that there's only a tenuous relationship between (A) musical noteworthiness/value/interest/originality and (B) musical Wikipedia-defined-"notability", but that's the way it is here. -- Hoary (talk) 07:40, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Theuvsound. There are no "walkarounds". None. In order to be eligible for a Wikipedia article, a band must be the subject of significant coverage in independent, credible sources. Thanks for being frank but these standards are mandatory. Cullen328 (talk) 08:01, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Theuvsound Please note that you will need to change your username to be more individualistic. Please do this at Special:GlobalRenameRequest. To be frank, and I apologize, Wikipedia has no interest in aiding search results for your band. Our only interest is in summarizing independent reliable sources that have significant coverage of your band, showing how it is notable as defined by Wikipedia. 331dot (talk) 11:41, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hoary Hey I am unfamiliar with these terms as I am new can you please explain it clearly thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Akb bhatia (talkcontribs)
In plain English, then: There are not enough in-depth, non-routine, independent news articles about Choudhary written by identifiable authors in outlets with competent editorial oversight that fact-checks, discloses, and retracts. There is no evidence this actor has significant and/or leading roles in multiple notable films, television series, etc. Your single-tract mind on this front heavily suggests you are an alternate account created specifically to evade sanctions or a block on another account (specifically, Shikagami03 (talk · contribs)). —Jéské Couriano v^_^v a little blue Bori 21:14, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Akb bhatia: What @Hoary is saying is "Not Now!" and also that there have already been two community discussions held about deleting this article which concluded with 'Delete'. There have also been so many attempts to create a page for this person - and it has been deleted four times now - that we have grown tired of them all. That page can now only be created with the approval of an administrator and that is unlikely to happen for the next couple of years. We would say to you and to those who would create this article that it is simply WP:TOOSOON. I am sorry to disappoint you. Nick Moyes (talk) 21:16, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! So I have been in the process of writing a Wikipedia page about this non-profit organization. My article was declined because of non-verifiable references, so my question today is when I'm writing about organizations, what references should I be looking for or using. I just used the non-profits website. Any guidance would be appreciated. (Also, this is my first wiki article) Hochouston (talk) 16:34, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The issue is, notability. Notability is not the same as "important" or "meritorious" or "good". It's a function of media coverage - that is, the extent to which a topic has been noted. You can't show notability for [non-profit X] simply by telling us what [non-profit X] says about itself. Is there any media coverage of the non-profit? If yes, you cite that. If no... well, that's a strong indicator that it doesn't meet notability requirements. DS (talk) 17:01, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hochouston: Welcome to the Teahouse. As DragonflySixtyseven explained, the issue is that you just used the non-profits [sic] website. Notability is demonstrated by good, reliable secondary sources. The charity's website is considered to be a primary source, which has more limited uses on Wikipedia. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:28, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

great thanks for the advice, after adding more soucres are you in authority to make the draft an official article Morgan11100 (talk) 18:15, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Morgan11100, and welcome to the Teahouse. Please understand that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Hardly any information should be in a Wikipedia article unless it is found in such a reliable, independent source. You currently have two sources, one of which is not reliable (Wikis are generally user generated, so almost never regarded as reliable) and the other is not independent. When you have found several such indepedednt reliable sources, added them, and made sure that every single statement in the draft is corroborated by one of those sources, then you can submit the draft for review by pasting at the top, and it will go onto a pile for a reviewer to get to it. Draft: Decision Education Foundation - Rejected but now ready for re-review?[edit]

I have a draft article on the Decision Education Foundation that was rejected. It can be found at: 1

I've added citations from numerous books and also specified where there was a potential conflict since an author of one of the independent studies was also involved with Decision Education Foundation. After removing an irrelevant section and cleaning up duplicate citations, I believe the article should meet Wikipedia standards but don't want to assume anything. Is there any penalty for resubmitting the updated article? Or, if that's the wrong approach, can someone suggest how I should proceed to get it re-reviewed? I believe the foundation meets the notability standards and that there are sufficient well sourced citations to pass.

Please advise me

Potential conflict: I am employed by the Decision Education Foundation. This was disclosed in my original submission and shows up on my talk page.

@Tonypray: Welcome to the Teahouse, and thanks for disclosing your relationship with the subject. By no means am I a reviewer, but if you haven't read Your first article, I strongly suggest you do so. You have a lot of external links in the body of the draft, which shouldn't be there (see WP:ELPOINTS, point 2). As someone affiliated with the subject, you also appear to have fallen into the trap of writing promotionally; for example, I don't see the encyclopedic value in letting readers know that the foundation was founded to improve the lives of young people by empowering them with effective decision skills, or that it also works to create awareness that decision competency is important to a well-rounded education (on par with literacy and numeracy). This is suitable for an ad, but for the draft to be considered a suitable encyclopedia article it should be written more neutrally. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:37, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the wonderful feedback! I was starting to think I was lost deep in the technical aspects of Wikipedia and would never see the sunrise. I'll be incorporating your suggestions immediately. Thanks again! Tonypray (talk) 17:42, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Tonypray, the main problem you will have in getting your draft accepted as an article will be in finding reliable independent published sources with in-depth discussion of the subject. I see you have cited 18 sources, but the ones I've check either weren't independent of the subject, or lacked discussion of it. Another issue is the section titled "Citations" – it's not clear what it's there for, and I think you should delete it. And the External links is too long – you should keep the link to the subject's own web site and get rid of the others (or cite them as references, if appropriate). How do I add text to the end of (my own) paragraph when replying on a talk page?[edit]

Yesterday I changed from Legacy Vector to Vector, though when I checked my prefs just now I see Monobook. Regardless, I can no longer type some characters at the end of a paragraph if I pause in my writing. This only happens if I hit "reply" to a post (which is new to me); if I just hit "edit" as I have been doing for years, WP is perfectly functional.

For example, if I'm typing, then decide to go back and change a word or fix a typo, I can no longer continue with the paragraph. Instead, I need to start a new paragraph, then hit backspace to join them together. Now I can't add anything to that paragraph, either at the end on in the middle.

Sometimes I can't add any letters, but other times it's just certain characters. Parentheses seem to be a particular problem: If I add a parenthesis, WP will insert it at the beginning of the paragraph instead of at the cursor.

I haven't explored further to narrow down what the bug is, but it's been more than once. Is it just me, or is this something in queue to be fixed? — kwami (talk) 21:18, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:Riiid[edit]

trying to understand what needs to be done to get this page published. 162.84.172.62 (talk) 01:30, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP 162.84.172.62. Did you see the comment "Needs to be rewritten and scrubbed for press release-like tone. Primary editors are either UPE or Paid contributors." that was left by the reviewer AngusWOOF who declined the draft last November? Generally, this means that (1) the subject's notability is not clearly established per Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies) and (2) that the tone of the article is too promotional. The latter can probably be fixed by some rewriting per Wikipedia:Neutral point of view, but the notability issue can only be resolved by finding better reliable sourcing for the article and then basing the article primarily on what those sources are saying. Wikipedia isn't really interested in what the company has to say about itself; it's more interested in what WP:SECONDARY sources are saying about it. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:51, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Welcome to the Teahouse!
@AngusWOOF declined the submission because it "needs to be rewritten and scrubbed for press release-like tone" and "is not adequately supported by reliable sources". The relevant policies and guidelines here are Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not and Wikipedia:Reliable sources, as well as, of course, Your first article. I would also recommend having a brief glance at Wikipedia:Perennial sources to get an idea of the kinds of sources which are allowed, though a source does not need to be on that list to be used. casualdejekyll 01:57, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do I get my translation to main space?[edit]

I've translated an article from Mongolian to English. As the original Mongolian article was scarce in reference I did my best to provide some. BTW, I'm an employee at the company whose page I'm trying to translate. Here is the link to translation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bsquizer/Most_Money I've also tried to create a separate Article in English wiki but that didn't go well. It was declined twice as of now.  Bsquizer (talk) 02:00, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bsquizer: Welcome to the Teahouse! For it to have any chance to become an article on the English Wikipedia, you'll have to add multiple independent published reliable sources that provide significant coverage of Most Money, in order to demonstrate that it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If you haven't already done so, I suggest you read Help:Your first article. I also suggest you remove the table with the external links per WP:EL. When you're done, you could move the page to Draft:Most Money and then add to the page to request it be reviewed. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 02:29, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bsquizer. You might also want to look at WP:TRANSLATE and WP:HOWTRANS to make sure you properly attribute any of the content you've translated from Mongolian Wikipedia to English Wikipedia. In addition, if you know who c:User:Badmaa G might be, please ask them to check their Commons user talk page because there are some issues with the files they uploaded that need to be resolved in order to avoid them being deleted from Commons. You might want to also take a look at Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies), Wikipedia:Ownership of content, Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, Wikipedia:Conflict of interest#Law of unintended consequences and Wikipedia:Arguments to avoid in deletion discussions#Wikipedias in other languages and try to explain them to your employer because they might not understand what a Wikipedia article is intended to be and the policies and guidelines for Mongolian Wikipedia might not be the same as English Wikipedia or they might not be applied as vigorously. -- Marchjuly (talk) 04:01, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to get a "marked up copy" of an article's references[edit]

How can I get a "marked up copy" of an article's references. It would be useful when analysing their value (especially for an AfD) to have a sandbox copy of them, complete with clickable links, etc. and other functions available when viewing the rendered results of the reflist template. It could act as a valuable scratch pad in grouping them, describing, then deleting them, and invoking them individually when expressing an opinion on them.

I did try searching the Teahouse archives, and I did try copying the entire article into a sandbox, then replacing the template with . Can't blame me for trying, but that replaces it with the code executed dynamically to produce the result I'm after.

So is there a way to collect, like reflist does, an ordered list without duplicates of the references in an article, as they would be marked up for rendering in the typical ==References== section?  signed, Willondon (talk) 03:31, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Question about Wikipedia words in Google searches[edit]

Hello, I noticed that when I search for a page like Principia College in Google, on the right of the screen part of the first paragraph from Wikipedia will show up on Google search results. If the current first paragraph has been updated, is there a way to reset the cache or something like that, so the current version of the Wikipedia page shows up on Google searches? Thanks Archivingperson (talk) 04:44, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. Changes made on Wikipedia are not immediately reflected on Google. Google will take its own specfic time to carry them out. Kpddg (talk contribs) 05:02, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Archivingperson. To elaborate a bit on the above, the content of and images in a Google Knowledge Graph is 100% the responsibility of Google and zero percent the responsibility of Wikipedia. Wikipedia freely licences its content for re-use and other websites can re-use our content as they see fit, as long as they attribute the content to the Wikipedia editors who created it. If you have complaints, take them to Google. Improving a Wikipedia article often (but not always) results in an improvement of the knowledge graph. But again, that is Google's responsibility, not ours. Cullen328 (talk) 06:23, 11 March 2022 (UTC)4[reply]

Reads like an advertisement? how to fix it[edit]

I have submitted my article for review twice. First time it was declined on the basis of insufficient notability, second time around there was additional reads like an advertisement warning. I don't know what to do anymore. I'm at my wits end. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Most_Money_(Digital_wallet) here's the link for the draft. Any, pointers? Bsquizer (talk) 07:57, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Bsquizer, these are two separate issues. Let's consider notability first. You need to provide references that demonstrate that it passes the corportation notability standard. The current ones don't look very good to me—this is just an ad, without any author or indication it was published under news.mn's editorial process. It makes me distrust that news.mn as a source. This is an interview, which likely doesn't count. This is too short to count as significant coverage. And this isn't independent secondary coverage. So you have zero qualifying sources, when you need two at bare minimum.
On advertisement, the article isn't too bad imo. So focus on getting coverage. What's Mongolia's paper of record? Have they published reported profiles of the company or similar? If so, add those. If there's nothing like that, then this topic isn't ready for a page yet, and no amount of editing can change that. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 08:40, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Sdkb Thank you for the input. Bsquizer (talk) 09:45, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to insert straight quotation marks in math formulas?[edit]

I'm working on replacing some low-quality images of formulas in applicative universal grammar (example) with wiki markup. However, the MathML renderer doesn't seem to want to straight double quotes. Help:Displaying a formula doesn't say anything about quotation marks. I've tried the following methods, but they all give me a syntax error:

 • \"
 • putting " inside \normaltext{} instead of \text{}
 • \char13
 • \textquotedbl
 • \textquotesingle \textquotesingle

Using two single quotes sort of works, but they appear as closing quotes and makes the output kind of ugly:

math displays double quotes just fine, but the output isn't as good as the MathML renderer because some of the text touches the vinculum:

"my" :: OTT   "friend" :: T/p q :: y

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Ixfd64 (talk) 08:05, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ixfd64, hmm, that's rather above my pay grade haha, but Help talk:Displaying a formula has 260 watchers, so I'd try asking there and see if anyone knows how to help. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 08:41, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should I just move this section?[edit]

I am writing my MA dissertation about publications by art galleries and similar institutions. I would like to start helping to improve Wikipedia, and thought I would start with the exhibition catalogue page. It doesn't seem to have any references, and in my opinion could do with a bit of a re-write in general.

One problem is that the page covers both exhibition catalogues as would be associated with an art exhibition, and trade fair guides which (apparently? I've never seen it, and there's no citation) can also be called exhibition catalogues.

I wrote a suggestion on the talk page about moving the stuff about trade fair catalogues to the trade fair article. But maybe I should just move it myself? How do I decide whether to do this myself? Any advice appreciated. Ascendingrisingharmonising (talk) 16:07, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ascendingrisingharmonising I'm not familiar with the subject, but the opening line is – "There are two types of exhibition catalogue (or exhibition catalog): a printed list of exhibits at an art exhibition; and a directory of exhibitors at a trade fair or business-to-business event." Does your research show that there are two types of publications known as exhibition catalogues? If so, then both types should be left in, if you can find good references. If the opening sentence is wrong, then you should correct it, and only leave what is actually known as exhibition catalogues. I would suggest that you first work on finding good references, and give others who may have an interest in the article time to respond to what you wrote on the Talk page. Best wishes on your projects – both academic and Wikipedia article editing. And thank you for wanting to help. Karenthewriter (talk) 16:30, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. In my opinion, there are "two types of publications known as exhibition catalogues" - but one type is almost always known as an exhibition catalogue, whereas the other type is only occasionally called that and usually called something else (and has little to do with what people usually mean by the term). GLORY - SUGGESTED UKRAINE VERSION: GLORY UKRAINE[edit]

I want to submit a suggested version of GLORY by John Legend and Common with two substitutions of rap sections specific to Ukraine. I would submit the lyrics with the substituted portions. Can I do this, knowing the lyrics are copyrighted? I'm new to this. Harlanpjohnson (talk) 16:34, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Harlanpjohnson: Welcome to the Teahouse! It depends on the extent to which you plan to use the lyrics in the article. Quotations of copyrighted work within the analytical framework can fall into the fair use provisions within US copyright law (and to a lesser extent fair dealing and related concepts within other jurisdictions). Such quotations can be done through inline text, block quotes, or (in the case of a song) inclusion of an image showing part of the sheet music. However, how much of a song you can quote is open to interpretation, but you should follow the Non-free content policy. ––FormalDude talk 16:42, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Harlanpjohnson. I may be misunderstanding you, but what I think you are saying is that you want to use Wikipedia to publish an alternative version of a song. If that is indeed what you mean, then I am afraid that Wikipedia may not be used to publish original material, no matter how important or commendable it might be. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, and all that should go into any article is a summary of what independent reliable sources have published about the subject. Translations of the bible[edit]

I often find when reading articles something to do with Christianity that, when quoting a bible passage, they tend to use the King James Version. Is this due to a policy/guideline (and if so why), or is it just an unwritten rule? Either way, I do not consider it very helpful - the King James Version is unclear for modern readers (given how the language has changed, and translation techniques have improved). Farleigheditor (talk) 17:29, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Correct. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:27, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Farleigheditor I don't know of any written guidance. I tend to consider it a version of WP:ENGVAR/WP:REFVAR, as in keep consistent within article, don't change without good reason (for example see the editsummaries in this diff:[2]), and if you start the article you get to pick. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 18:26, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Farleigheditor, the simple answer is "because it's the easy thing to do". There is a template for King James that is simple and there isn't for other versions. That's it. Human laziness - mine included. Gråbergs Gråa Sång gives good advice above. Jenhawk777 (talk) 02:51, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing a broken archive (probably from a lint error) is a clear improvement, so don't let bureaucratic rules about not modifying archives get in your way. Comedic, Irrelevant Articles[edit]

Hey, I'm kinda new to this creating pages thing, am I allowed to create a commemorative article about something no one is ever going to need in terms of information? I was wondering if I could create an article for my cat, Chesterlord, just for fun, maybe in the hopes that someone in the future would randomly stumble across it and laugh about it or something? Like, I noticed the Wikipediholic Test and that seems really irrelevant towards actual research, but seems like so much fun, can I create something like that?

Help for new article about the source[edit]

HI!! I'm new here and I became with a view to make a page for my favorite artist called LØREN. While I was reading about how to write an article in Wikipedia I saw that my sources have to be reliable and from a trusted and high-quality source. The only sources I can find right now are these sites: https://kprofiles.com/loren-profile-facts/#disqus_thread https://i-d.vice.com/en_uk/article/m7enn8/loren-south-korean-music-interview&ved=2ahUKEwjt5_b08 https://kpopmembersbio.com/loren-profile/&ved=2ahUKEwiyoMzD_r72AhWKRvEDHWW_B9s4ChAWegQIBxAB&usg=AOvVaw0CNVAVghzwxTDX5XTYek6qr72AhUtwQIHHem1C04QFnoECB4QAQ&usg=AOvVaw2OC7-u0OPSZGP-PbPbsHsT https://rollingstoneindia.com/loren-delivers-pop-punk-excellence-on-need-ooo-eee/&ved=2ahUKEwiyoMzD_r72AhWKRvEDHWW_B9s4ChAWegQIEBAB&usg=AOvVaw2kianij-dzrbDVirT17Npg https://genius.com/artists/Lren&ved=2ahUKEwitwq74_r72AhURwAIHHYouC-A4FBAWegQIFBAB&usg=AOvVaw2pjIZUXkA_-7-RUwhMdiaz At a first look that's all the trusty information I can find an I'm sure I'm not going too find more, plus Instagram where the artist and his own company FIRE EXIT RECØRDS have corrected and approved these informations. What I want to say is if there is any chance my article will not be deleted after I post it because of the source. I'm going also to add it to the Wikipedia: Requested Artcles but I would like to have some more information. Also, if I write, do you think is going to be notable and is this enough information? Thank you for your time. Fisforfenia (talk) 21:07, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Fisforfenia: Some of the links look dead. Have you read WP:NMUSICIAN yet? It seems a bit weak for now. You should read WP:YOURFIRSTARTICLE. This is very hard to do successfully if you are new. If you think you have enough, you can start a draft at Wikipedia:Articles for creation. It's not likely that another editor will see a request and act on it to create the article themselves. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 21:32, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was a mistake, but how to fix it?[edit]

I was in a hurry to create an English version of a page devoted to the Russian businessman and philanthropist Boris Zimin (this person supported Russian science for years, and now there is a concern in Russian scientific society that he might be sanctioned, which would be terribly unfair! It's just an explanation why I was in a hurry). So I made a wrong decision to create a short page of a single paragraph and then develop it into a normal English page. But I underestimated the speed of Wikipedia: in 15 minutes the page was converted into a draft as relying on a single source (though several sources were already at hand, I did not have time to insert them).

Now, the page is a draft: Draft:Boris Zimin

It contains now a number of sources both English and Russian, and I am a bit frustrated because the person who converted it into a draft does not answer, and I don't see what's wrong with the page now. If somebody feels that it requires improvement, please let me know. But if it is OK, how can I make it a normal English version? Mlarisa (talk) 22:25, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Mlarisa, User:Melecie - I didn't move it to draft space. I only put a note on it saying that it had been moved from article space to draft space. It was moved from article space to draft space by User:Singularity42. You asked me on my talk page, and I gave the same answer, and Singularity42 answered, saying that it appeared that you had resolved the issue, which was that there was only one source.
I will add that your mistake was one that is sometimes made by editors creating an article in article space, and that is to create part of the article, in article space, and expect to finish it in article space soon. As you can see, New Page Review is often quick in dealing with clearly incomplete articles, which may be moved to draft space or tagged for speedy deletion. What I, and some other editors, advise, is not to put a fragment of an article in article space. Put the fragment of the article in user space, such as a sandbox, or in draft space. When it is ready for article space, move it to article space.
What you can do now is to wait for a reviewer to accept the draft, which moves it into article space. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:38, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. I'm reviewing an article for GA status and one of the sources listed is a link to a soundcloud file. I don't know if I should treat this similar to an archive.org link or if it's an unreliable source altogether. Any opinions? NSNW (talk) 23:01, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@NSNW, can you give us the link and the statement it's trying to support? Soundclouds are managed by the artist, typically, so I'd guess it's likely suitable only for supporting WP:ABOUTSELF material. Sdkbtalk 00:53, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing. (https://soundcloud.com/qanonanonymous/episode-123-international-qanon-the-netherlands-feat-marc-andre-argentino). The source is referencing the fact that a researcher identified a trend in how QAnon followers attempt to bring female followers into joining the theory, (the article I am reviewing is Pastel QAnon). NSNW (talk) 01:09, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would also like to add that the source is isn't necessary for the text. There are three sources besides the SoundCloud source that are accurate being used to cite the claim. I'm mainly doing this for future reference if I ever come across a SoundCloud source that's by itself. NSNW (talk) 01:13, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@NSNW, ah, well in that case, I'd say the principle applies that it matters who the source is and what their credentials are, not what platform they're publishing on. So just as YouTube isn't normally reliable but a YouTube video from a YouTube video from The New York Times very much is, so too a Soundcloud audio file can be reliable, but it'd be have to be from a reliable source. I'd have to look more into it to say if Marc-André Argentino or QAnon Anonymous meet that bar, but that's the relevant question. Hope that helps! Cheers, Sdkbtalk 07:45, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Alright then, I will probably just ask that the source be removed. There are already reliable sources that cite Marc-Andre Argentino, so it shouldn't be a problem; thank you. NSNW (talk) 19:59, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

hi Dragonkingluv and welcome to the teahouse! the first source is part of an opinion piece, and while it might state facts, it is better to find a less opinionated source for it as per WP:NEWSORG: Editorial commentary, analysis and opinion pieces, whether written by the editors of the publication (editorials) or outside authors (invited op-eds and letters to the editor from notable figures) are reliable primary sources for statements attributed to that editor or author, but are rarely reliable for statements of fact. the second source is a forbes contributors piece, which is not only an opinion piece, but also don't have as much editorial oversight and as such generally considered unreliable. happy editing! 💜  melecie  talk - 05:49, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@AhmdAsjad, see Help:Your first article. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 07:39, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You have a track record of creating articles without going through AfC that are then nominated for deletion, also putting an article in mainspace after it was declined at AfC, also creating biography articles of living people without adequate referencing (Tim McGeary), also being warned for removing AfD tags from your articles. If you believe you have refs for Neha Pandey, then I strongly recommend using the AfC process. That way, one reviewer will decide if the draft is worthy, rather than wasting the time of many at AfD. To put it into just a few words: A shortcut is exactly like any other redirect, which is like any other page on the wiki. To make a redirect, you just add that bit of code on the page you want to redirect from to point it toward the page you want to redirect to. In this case, that meant creating MOS:SPACEBENEATH with the content #REDIRECT Wikipedia:Manual of Style#MOS:SPACEBENEATH (along with the R from shortcut tag just to categorize it), which linked to the specific paragraph where the Shortcut tag was added on the MoS page. — Bsoykatalk 14:19, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Mytom3 - If I had been the reviewer, I would have declined Draft:Anshuman Tiwari (musician). Please do not annoy multiple editors by asking them for guidance. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:17, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

AfC for Captain Robert Hicks has been rejected by one reviewer[edit]

If anyone is able to assist me in saving this article from its current "rejected" status, would they be kind enough to do so here: 3? - I find it difficult to be in two places at once! Would a change of title, making the article about the Hicks family, be more acceptable than being focussed on Robert Hicks? Anne (talk) 19:35, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry but no amount of assistance is going to make the subject (or their family) notable enough to become the subject of a Wikipedia article. You have already been given very good advice.--Shantavira|feed me 19:57, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Promoting all presidents to good article status[edit]

I would like to work towards getting all the presidents to at least good article status. I was wondering if someone can evaluate all the presidents articles that are not good or featured articles on what their issues are and figure out which articles will be easy to work on and which articles will need a lot of work before reaching featured article status. Interstellarity (talk) 21:02, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd recommend you check out the US Presidents Wikiproject, which is intended to organize work on those articles. I'm not sure how active that project is, but it does have some tables to overview the current state of those articles. It takes some work to evaluate an article, so it might be best to choose one to focus on and ask specifically about it.--Noren (talk) 21:14, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
There are lots of articles about presidents and most of them probably have banners for WikiProjects on the tops of their user talk pages; so, that might be a good place to start. You’re also probably going to need to be clearer about which type of articles you asking for help on. Are you talking about biographies about individual presidents of countries, organizations, institutions or companies? Are you talking about more general articles about the office of president, or list articles about the president of certain countries? The word “president” might mean different things to different people. — Marchjuly (talk) 21:17, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Marchjuly: To be clear, I am talking about the biographies of the individual presidents who served as president. Interstellarity (talk) 21:39, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
User:Interstellarity - I think you missed the point of the question in giving an American-centric answer in an international Anglophone community. There are approximately 200 countries in the world, and I would guess that more than half of them each have an office of president, where the others either are monarchies or have some alternate governmental system. There have been hundreds, maybe a few thousand, individuals who have served as president of a republic. You were being asked whether you meant President of the United States, current heads of state, or what. This is an international encyclopedia. Robert McClenon (talk) 03:56, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Interstellarity, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Vladimir Putin are just two newsworthy examples of the "individual presidents who served as president". Although both articles look very good to my inexpert eye, neither is "good" (let alone "featured"), and I think you'd have your hands full getting either promoted. -- Hoary (talk) 22:08, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: To be even more clear, I have no interest in promoting those articles to good article status. What I would like to do is focus on the US presidents. Interstellarity (talk) 22:24, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Your best bet, in my opinion, is to discuss what you want to do with the members of Wikipedia:WikiProject United States Presidents (as suggested above by Noren) because that's where you're likely to find editors familiar with these articles and interested in helping you. Check out WP:POTUS#Task 1 because that seems to be one of primary goals of that WikiProject. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:32, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Interstellarity Interesting proposal. Per WP:POTUS#Task 1, 30 of 45 U.S. Presidents' articles are currently either GA or FA. Of the other 15, most are either Failed nominations (examples Kennedy, LBJ) or Delisted former GA or FA (examples Jefferson, Ford). Appears only Buchanan (C-class) and Hoover (C-class) have never been nominated. The article on President Obama achieved FA in 2004, was reviewed and kept 11 times, then reviewed and demoted in 2021. edit and update a wikkipedia page[edit]

Good day, i edited and updated a wikipedia page but it was reversed, how can i have it approved and unreversed? Markegwu (talk) 23:26, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Markegwu: As noted in the message on your talk page, you are trying to delete a lot from the article with no explanation. Please discuss it on that article's talk page. Don't edit war. RudolfRed (talk) 23:37, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
thanks, how do i get to the artcles talk page? Markegwu (talk) 23:45, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Dave_Umahi RudolfRed (talk) 23:49, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Hi Markegwu. The first thing you should do is check the page history of the article in question and see if the editor who undid your changes left an edit summary explaining why. The edit summary might contain a list of relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines that applied to your edit (sometimes this includes links (i.e. words indicated in blue) where you can find more specific information. If you find an edit summary and don't understand what it means, then you can start a discussion about the edit you made on the article's talk page as explained here. If you're not sure how to use an article talk page, you can find out more information on that here. Wikipedia is a collaborative editing project and often there are disagreements between editors about what content should be added to articles and what content should be removed. When that happens, the best way to try and resolve things is through discussion to see if a consensus can be established either way. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:44, 12 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

external links[edit]

Hi my question is that how I can add external links Fashijanjua (talk) 00:06, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

External links must not be to company websites, as that is considered promotional. You have attempted to add metsolar to three articles. That is considered attempted spamming, and can get you indefinitely blocked. David notMD (talk) 00:32, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
if i want to add this website then Fashijanjua (talk) 00:33, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, a company website can be an extenal link only if the article is about the company. Same for people. David notMD (talk) 00:54, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to become a host in Teahouse[edit]

Can you tell me how to become a host on Teahouse? 2001:44B8:41C6:F700:5C17:7652:27D9:A01F (talk) 02:27, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Becoming a host at the teahouse requires you to be extended confirmed, which additionally requires you first to create an account (which has many other benefits) and have 500 edits + 30 days of editing casualdejekyll 03:01, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, the title of "host" confers no privileges or authority; it's generally given to users who are regulars and give helpful answers. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 03:16, 13 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
