Platforms are allowed to fix themselves, according to the same rules that created the problem in the first place.
FIX IT! What is the solution?
Fix platforms according to democracy and people’s interest.
HOW can you fix it?
Give only independent bodies the task to look into how platforms harm society. Then apply laws to address the issue, to ensure real transparency and accountability.
WHY is this an issue?
Corporate or state interests get to decide solutions to fix platforms’ harms to people and society.
WHAT is the issue?
Platforms’ business model relies on exploiting our communications, interactions and intimate moments.
WHY is this an issue?
Surveillance ads can change vote results, can deprive people of opportunities and harm our mental health.
FIX IT! What is the solution?
End surveillance ads and give people the choice to decide what content they want to see.
HOW can you fix it?
Start from assuming people don’t want to be tracked. Be transparent about all ads.
WHAT is the issue?
Platforms can be pushed by laws or states officials to silence important voices.
WHY is this an issue?
Platforms will always put profit before people, and zealous governments may abuse these rules tosilence their critics.The content of political dissidents who organise and speak out online, like human rights defenders, journalists, activists, and marginalised groups can be randomly taken down.
FIX IT! What is the solution?
Prevent arbitrarily or abusive decisions regarding people’s online content.
HOW can you fix it?
Always leave courts to decide what’s legal and what’s not. Do not reinforce Big Tech platforms’ power by making them judge and jury. Invest in real solutions, centered on the needs of victims. Repair social issues with social means, not tech “fixes”.
