About the sweat and water resistance of AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation)

Learn about sweat and water resistance on your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation), and what to do if your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) get wet.

Your AirPods Pro, AirPods (3rd generation), and MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation) are water and sweat resistant, but they are not waterproof or sweatproof.* The MagSafe Charging Case and Wireless Charging Case for AirPods Pro are not water or sweat resistant.

AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) aren't designed for use in water sports like swimming, or for showering. After workouts, heavy sweating, or water splashes and before putting AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) into the charging case, wipe down your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth. Don't use heat or compressed air to dry your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation).

References to AirPods (3rd generation) below include the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation).

Keep your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) safe

Sweat and water resistance aren’t permanent conditions. They might diminish over time. AirPods Pro, AirPods (3rd generation), and the MagSafe Charging Case for AirPods (3rd generation) can't be rechecked or resealed for sweat and water resistance.

Follow these tips to avoid damage to your AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation):

  • Don't place your AirPods under running water, such as a shower or faucet.
  • Don't swim with or otherwise submerge your AirPods.
  • Don't put AirPods in the washing machine or dryer.
  • Don't wear AirPods in a sauna or steam room.
  • Don't expose AirPods to high-velocity water, such as while water skiing. 
  • Avoid dropping AirPods or subjecting them to other impacts.

If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to liquid through any of the scenarios above:

  • Wipe them clean with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Allow them to completely dry before using them or placing them in the charging case.

Don't expose AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, perfumes, solvents, detergent, acids or acidic foods, insect repellent, sunscreen, oil, or hair dye. All of these can negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes. If your AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation) are exposed to any of these:

  • Wipe them clean with a cloth slightly dampened with fresh water and dry with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth.
  • Allow them to completely dry before using them or placing them in the charging case.

* AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) are sweat and water resistant for non-water sports and exercise. AirPods Pro and AirPods (3rd generation) were tested under controlled laboratory conditions, and have a rating of IPX4 under IEC standard 60529. Sweat and water resistance are not permanent conditions and resistance might decrease as a result of normal wear. Do not attempt to charge wet AirPods Pro or AirPods (3rd generation); refer to the instructions above for cleaning and drying instructions. The MagSafe Charging Case and Wireless Charging Case for AirPods Pro are not sweat or water resistant.
