There are two SIM options for connecting your WiFi + Cellular iPad model to a data plan: a physical SIM card or eSIM technology.† (Note: Wi-Fi iPad models cannot connect to cellular networks.)

Physical SIM card: All Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models have a physical nano-SIM tray that will hold a carrier nano-SIM card (also called 4FF SIM card). Your iPad may have a carrier SIM card already installed if you purchased it from a carrier. If not, you can contact your carrier to obtain an appropriate card for your iPad. eSIM technology: Newer Wifi + Cellular iPad models include built-in eSIM technology that essentially acts as a digital SIM card. There are a few ways to activate an eSIM on your iPad, including downloading it right on the iPad itself, scanning a QR code, or using an app from a carrier. With eSIM, you can choose cellular data plans from select carriers in the U.S. and in more than 180 countries and regions around the world. Apple Trade In makes it easy to get credit toward the purchase of your next iPad. Simply answer a few questions about your device. If your iPad is engraved, it may be eligible for trade-in. Based on what you tell us, we’ll provide an estimated trade-in value. If you pay monthly, we’ll apply the value as an instant credit to lower the monthly payments of your new iPad. If you pay in full, we’ll credit your payment method after we receive your trade-in. If it’s not eligible for credit, you can recycle it for free.

Once you accept the estimated trade-in value quote, we'll ship you a free trade-in kit. When we receive your trade-in, we'll verify its condition, and if everything checks out, your trade-in will be complete. If your device doesn’t match the condition you described, you’ll receive an email with next steps. If you paid in full and the value of your device was more than the cost of your new iPad, you’ll receive an Apple Gift Card by email with the remaining amount.

The online trade-in process generally takes 2–3 weeks.

You can also trade in your device at an Apple Store at the point of purchase, however the trade-in value in the store may be different from the estimated trade-in value you received online.

That depends on how you pay for your new iPad.

If you use Apple Card Monthly Installments and include a trade-in, your estimated trade-in credit is instantly applied to the purchase price of your new iPad.* Once we receive your trade-in device and confirm that the condition matches what you described, there’s nothing more you need to do.

If you pay in full, your trade-in value is applied as a credit to your original payment method after we receive your old device and confirm that the condition matches what you described.

In either case, if we provide a revised trade-in value based on the condition of your old device, we’ll work with you to confirm that you still want to move forward with the trade-in.

If you’re trading in online, it generally takes 2–3 weeks. But the sooner you send us your device, the sooner we can verify its condition and apply the trade-in credit to your order. If you’re trading in at an Apple Store, you’ll receive either instant credit toward your next purchase or an Apple Gift Card you can use anytime.

For T-Mobile/Sprint, activation can happen directly on your iPad. First, go to settings and scroll to "Cellular Data.” Then select your carrier and follow the prompts. When selecting your plan, T-Mobile/Sprint customers need a plan with a minimum of 10GB of data to be eligible. For Verizon you will need to visit this site and follow the instructions. When selecting a Verizon plan, Unlimited and Unlimited Plus are eligible.
