It’s amazing to me how… in 2022… some academic librarians still have a “if we build it they will come” approach to services.

Finally watched tick, tick... Boom! I'm going to be a blubbering mess for the rest of the day. (When he said "Pam, Gordon, Ali", I lost it). 😢

I'm not sure what it says about my current state, but I've been listening to Hadestown on a non-stop loop for 48 hours.

I know you're anxious about starting the new semester next week. I am, too. But it's still Sunday. Enjoy what is left of your holiday. Don't send that email.

Finally made it back to L.A. at 3am after a 5-hr flight delay. Still, I’m grateful to be able to spend New Year’s on my own couch. 🎉

“So an unintended consequence of this mode of collaboration is that we had to start checking inboxes and instant-messenger tools all the time. Roughly once every six minutes we’re checking an inbox or an instant-messenger tool. This destroys our ability to actually do work.”

Higher ed culture has defaulted to the “hyperactive hive-mind” mode of work. It’s slowing us down creatively, administratively, and cognitively.

Getting ready for 2022 by emptying all my "someday" lists: my Netflix queue, my Zotero "to read" folder, my Libby "on deck" tag, my Safari reading list. All of it. Starting the new year with no residual TBR weight.

Watching what's happening at TAMU libraries--turning into a "service unit" rather than an academic one--and feeling a chill. Whatever you think about faculty status for academic librarians the right of administration to just dissolve it when they want to is outrageous.

There is no doubt that the libraries provide a critically important service for the entire campus. Therefore, I agree that the University Libraries does not belong within one college and Cushing Library should remain within the libraries. However, I do believe that a significant change is needed in the administrative structure of the libraries. The University Libraries will be administratively modified to become a service unit to efficiently and effectively provide top quality service to the campus community. The leader of this administrative unit will be the University Librarian, which will replace the current Dean of Libraries, and will report directly to the Provost. As a service unit, the University Libraries will no longer serve as a tenure home for faculty. Tenured and tenure-track faculty currently in University Libraries will be accommodated in a new departmental home with a full-time appointment in the University Libraries service unit.

  20. We’re excited to launch “Information Literacy for Mortals,” as the 5th essay in PIL's Provocation Series. Mike Caulfield () challenges us to consider students’ understanding of the social heuristics of information as a capability to be tapped.

A young blond man in a beige hoodie stands still, with his back to the camera in a busy Times Square streetscape in New York City. He is surrounded by lights, billboards, signs and traffic all competing for the viewer’s attention.
