We are a nation where the president will come to our city to join a roundtable on gun violence but will not visit the jail that the policies they are discussing will fill. They talk about sending people ‘away’. There is no ‘away’. There is only somewhere else.
Today I read the introduction Angela Davis wrote to the new edition of her autobiography. I was really struck by the way she combines a spirit of generous appreciation with sharp criticism of her younger self. Lots to learn from this.
I just received Alaa Abd el-Fattah's 'You Have Not Yet Been Defeated", a collection of the Egyptian revolutionary's extraordinary jailhouse writing. I was so struck by @NaomiAKlein's preface, which is about revolution and defeat

In the wake of George Floyd’s murder, Minneapolis police pledged to limit their use of no-knock warrants. Then, in the span of 10 months from 11/20 to 8/21, they requested more than 90 such warrants. And this week they used one to kill a sleeping 22-year-old, then lied about it.
It’s just heartbreaking to see people try their hardest to reform a police department that can’t be reformed. “Defund the police” gets cast as unrealistic but this is the co-chair on the commission to improve police transparency and accountability pleading with cops to be honest
The wall in Al Ram displaced my family and killed off what used to be a commercial hub. Al Ram was the place for shopping for groceries, clothes, you name it. It was the place for fixing your car, getting the best kebab, and more. The apartheid wall does much more than separation
I don’t think people are angry enough that bridges are collapsing, thousands are homeless, millions are hungry, a pandemic is running rampant, teachers and nurses are leaving their professions, and our government’s response is to endlessly increasing funding for police and war.
Not true.
Since the murder of George Floyd the police have:
- received more money
- been given more power
- one of their own rabid sycophants running the biggest city in the country
- killed more people
- been busted in a fake vaccine ID card ring
- skirted vaccine mandates
“It is an astronomically high number...said Dr. Ashish K. Jha, dean of the Brown University School of Public Health...“We got the medical science right. We failed on the social science."
Racism was already terrible enough, but the thing where now racists also hate and target hospitals/health care workers is a trash next step that I genuinely had not foreseen… sending solidarity to the health care workers at the counter protest in Toronto today.
Excited to announce my children's book, A IS FOR ASIAN AMERICAN, cowritten by @kylelucia and illustrated by @we_makebelieve, is forthcoming from @haymarketbooks, May 2023!
Briefly returning to Twitter-land to report that a student came up to me after class today, and showed me a copy of the draft anti-CRT bill on his laptop and told me that "soon you won't be able to teach like that anymore."
A lot of people are looking at the Ottawa protests and asking, what are the police even for? But the police are telling us exactly what they are for. The real question should be, if this is what police are for, why should we have them?
Breaking News: The Republican Party officially declared the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol “legitimate political discourse” and censured two of its own members, Representatives Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, for investigating it. https://nyti.ms/3uoKBPJ
It's the 2nd anniversary of my sister's death. I'll always love her beyond words. I'll always work to end the systems that criminalized her.
