Dave presented a competitive bid and told us he would send one of his workers who would do much of the work under his supervision. However, he briefly came once on the first day but never really supervised the work. In fact, after the job was done, he never examined the finished product. One of the windows was not installed satisfactorily and leaked after the first rain. I had to ask the worker to redo certain parts of the job because he used inappropriate materials for the job. They were very responsive and agreeable to any changes I requested, however, I felt compelled to monitor the work so I could catch any further mistakes. This made the job more stressful for me and I was essentially stuck there watching their work. Also their finish work was very mediocre. They reused wood that was cracked, caulked over weep holes, cut some of the finish moulding too short (1/4"), then filled it with caulk. Caulk work was not smooth. In general the end detail work lacked a professional look.

B Side Construction

After purchasing our new home we decided to add a ground level 1 bedroom apartment roughly 1000 square feet. The available space required some dirt removal to be able to build the appropriate apartment. After receiving several quotes me and my husband decided to go with B-Side Construction. They walked us through the building process and helped with the permits and the architect. the project took just about 2 months to complete. The house has a side entrance to the backyard so we never felt that the house was under construction, the workers were really nice and respectful to our property and us. I am not a construction expert but will do my best to explain what I saw. The build started with removal of the excess dirt to start the foundation for the apartment. Then came the framing and the floor, fallowed by the electrical and the plumbing work. Sheetrock was hung, patched, and painted. In the bathroom we decided to install tile, with all the appropriate accessories. the bedroom has a closet and a window, which was cut open in an existing wall and reinforced. The entire apartment has hardwood floors in each room except for the bathroom. The were even able to install a door in the back of the apartment and create a small storage space, really neat. The kitchen and the cabinets created very nice kitchen with black marble counter top. The entire apartment received 4 windows, front door, and a patio was built in front of the door in the back yard. We even asked if they could rebuild our fence which was falling apart at the time, so they agreed and gave us a fairly cheap price, since we were already doing the apartment they gave us a deal. Overall me and my husband are very pleased with the experience, for the money we invested and the price increase on our house, this was well worth it.

Kieron was punctual, professional and responsive throughout a three week process. While it's hard for me to really judge the quality of the prep work, as this is the first time I've had to have a building painted, I can say that the building looks even better than I originally anticipated. The original paint was in very poor condition, and I can tell that the old, cracking and peeling finish had been sanded and removed to a far greater degree than had been done on some other buildings in my neighborhood, where I think folks skimped on the prep work. Kieron was helpful with color selection, started the job on time, and helped find a good, reasonably priced carpenter to help with the replacement of some rotting wood. He then finished ahead of schedule. Overall, I'm very happy with the whole job and would use Kieron's services again.

John was refereed to me by a friend who is an architect. He started the job early and finished ahead of schedule. The first project was the retro fitting (a structural upgrade) of the entire structure. This involved jacking up the house and reinforcing framing that was not done to plan by the original builders. I have worked as a project manager for a construction company and I must say I was surprised at how efficient John was. The structure of the house is quite complicated but Johns knowledge of framing helped immensely in figuring out where the problem areas were. After the retro fit john began the remodel of the interior. He moved some interior walls and doors and then began the finish work. He trimmed the entire two rooms in custom milled red oak. The next project was the sunroom. John converted my roof deck into an enclosed sunroom and expanded the exterior space by enclosing the flat roof with a safety railing. He had a subcontractor install a walkable roofing material. The end result is amazing. I would give John my highest recommendation. He is kind, honest, and intelligent. I have hired many contractors in the past that have disappointed me. I consider myself lucky to have found John. He is not only a great structural carpenter but a true artist when it comes to finish woodworking.

Throughout our entire process we received incredible customer service and support. Communication was outstanding with weekly and daily contact from our site manager during the project. Overall the build was amazing value with high quality finishes even with adjustments to plans and specifications. The process was very efficient, taking 14 months from first day on site to handover even with extreme wet weather at the end thanks to our very efficient site manager. We would highly recommend M&M Construction and Home Design for those choosing to build their dream home in a cost effective and timely manner

We came to work with John Dufficy after reading some of his previous Angie s List reviews. Our project was still taking shape, and though we had initially planned to work with a contractor given the amount of work we had in mind, cost considerations led us to split the project out ourselves and bring in trades for the different parts of work. John served as our primary carpenter, and in that capacity he did a great job with the initial work of putting up dividing walls in our master bedroom one to create a foyer from a street entrance, the other to partition the space for closets we were designing. We were so satisfied with John s responsiveness, quality of work and value that we decided to retain him for several additional projects, including the construction and installation of the closet hardware, design, construction and installation of closet doors, build-out of second floor fireplace mantel, and assorted odds and ends. Throughout the project planning and work phases, John was not only patient with us as customers, but also provided great assistance and suggestions and we worked with our decorator in creating our vision for our space. Many of the suggestions that John made went into our final design, and the quality of his craftsmanship is quite apparent in the results (see accompanying pictures). John was great about providing thorough quotes, keeping the different parts of the project in budget, and working closely and responsively with clients that maintain heavy travel schedules. John made himself available to see through the city inspection process, which we successfully passed as a result of his attention to detail. Where cost overruns and delays are the norm, John completed everything in a timely fashion with minimal additional cost above that quoted. We are thoroughly pleased with the results. As our budget allows us to make additional planned improvements, we will certainly be calling on John s services in the future, and strongly encourage others with planned carpentry, millwork or other decorative woodworking needs to avail themselves of this conscientious and professional tradesman. If you would like to see the work firsthand, please feel free to contact me at 312.714.6162.

They did an excellent job overall. The owners (Greg Spry and Mike Galousin), their carpenters and workers are professional, friendly, and accommodating and took extra steps to mitigate the intrusion in our life during construction. They are a local small business that pays their workers good SF wages and insurance benefits, and they earn the recommendations they have.

Bill & Mike's Antiques
5.0
It is an antique shop and they also do great furniture refinishing work. Mike does beautiful framing. He is really kind of magical with wood. He is a downtown Martinez guy. He does an amazing job working on antiques. You can take an old antique that is in the garage or out in the weather and he can rebuild, refinish and replace it. It looks incredible when it?s done. He is very reasonable, price wise. I have recommended him to people. The other shopkeepers in Martinez too talk about him being magical with wood. He is really skilled. He also builds custom frames for people and he does it in a mission style, which is like arts and crafts. They are beautiful as well. You will see things like this in the magazine where people spend way more money than he would charge and they are not cheap. He is great for refinishing, repairing and custom framing. I didn?t buy anything the last time I was in there, but I have bought lots of stuff from him over the years. He is really good. His punctuality and professionalism are both good. I would definitely use his services in the future too.

We found water damage in our home and Gerhard was quick to respond and inspect. He's been amazing - not only fixed the issue (cut out damaged area and rebuild framing) but also made sure to identify the root of the problem to ensure no future damage. Very professional and fairly priced. Super highly recommended!

John is fantastic on details which is exactly what you want in a contractor - he is a master carpenter by any measure. I could not be happier with the work that John and his team performed on my Victorian. The job was to replace a fire damaged front entry stairs which was also severely damaged by dry rot and had its footings compromised. I had 5 other contractors quote me on the work. The quotes ranged from quite low to extraordinarily high. The other 4 contractors simply either did not scope the work correctly or over complicated the job. John did a very detailed survey of the job and listened to my concerns. He pointed out a number of items that the other contractors had missed and came up with a very good solution for the footing/framing problems I had. We agreed on a price very quickly as John provided a straightforward quote which outlined costs and schedules clearly with a contingency of additional hours if needed - which was not needed in the end as he hit his schedule right on target. The manner in which John and his team worked was extremely professional and courteous to me and to my neighbors. As the job was on a front entry stairs there was work performed on the city pavement - John made sure that the pavement was kept clean at all times and clear of any obstructions. The demolition was fast and did not damage other areas of the house not contacting the stairs - this is something other contractors I have employed have ignored in the past. The attention to detail on literally every aspect of the construction was staggering - there was no rough cuts and hiding of gaps. John was spot on with all his measurements - where a typical contractor would rush early in the job and have to spend a lot of time later "fixing up" bad joints - John made sure he built the stairs perfectly from the first cut he made - and I believe that this is how he manages to stay on schedule on his projects as he does not get involved in fixing clumsy mistakes later. Any time I came on the job John made time to walk me through what he was doing and kept me informed of how the job was progressing. Bottom line is that I would highly recommend John to anyone considering a remodeling project on their house - what you are getting is not only a contractor capable of performing the work quickly and correctly but you are also getting a master carpenter - as I got to know John through the job I learned that he also makes furniture and art installations - his work blew me away when I saw it in his studio - all I can say is contact this guy and prepare to be impressed.

First of all, John was a honest, hardworking and trustworthy contractor. He did the installation without damaging the surrounding stucco and made the install look very clean and professional. When he ran into unexpected issues he worked with me to decide on the best course of action. He did not take any shortcuts even though the job ran a little longer than he planned. In the end he did an amazing job and we are very happy with the results and highly recommend him to everyone. Thanks John!

These guys are good. Really good. My husband and I started working with Joe back in February. They have exceeded our expectations in ways we didn't anticipate or realize were so important: they became our partners through what can be a fairly complex process. We wanted to build a deck on top of a 3-car garage, and then run a private stair case to it from an existing balcony. So we contacted Joe to discuss our project. From the very first meeting, when Joe's crew showed up 10 minutes early and waited outside for our appointment time (a consistent theme many months later), we knew we found our contractors. They explained their recommended approach, described different options that we could choose from, and described in detail the city codes that we needed to consider. They also spotted some potential issues with our existing construction and identified work-arounds. And they invited us to visit their current job sites to see their work. Within a few days, we received a detailed price quote, with all labor and materials clearly defined. Prices were quite reasonable. They also performed an analysis of our garage roof structure and determined that we didn't require additional bracing - shaving a large expected cost off of the project. They answered every request and worked with us to finalize our plans. Construction time: Their work was well planned, creatively designed, carefully orchestrated, and meticulously performed - and came out perfect. And we noticed several touches we didn't expect or think of that enhanced the appearance. They take pride and ownership in every phase of their work. And this is why we will continue using Joe's crew for future project We highly recommend TRUTH INC construction. You won't be disappointed.

West Coast Windows & Doors Inc

I called West Coast Windows and Doors because I had some dry rot in my back door and around the door framing. An estimator came to my house, examined the door and gave me three options for replacement. After choosing the one that I preferred, he gave me a written cost estimate. I gave the company a deposit and they ordered the door. At that time, I was also given an approximation of the installation date, based on the expected delivery date of the door from the manufacturer. The door was delivered to them and they called to schedule the work, all within the expected time frame. On installation day the workers showed up promptly, were personable and professional and left the work site neat. They replaced the door framing, inspected to make sure that the dry rot had been completely removed, replaced the framing and hung the new door. I am completely satisfied with their work and will call them again if I need new windows or doors.

Carpentry Near You

Carpenters provide a wide range of services that span across many different parts of the home. Knowing what role carpenters play will make it easier to budget and to find the right person for the job.

How much does hiring a carpenter near me cost?

Most homeowners pay between $250 to $500 for the services of a carpenter.

If charging by the hour, expect to pay $35 to $100 per hour. Factors that will affect the overall cost include the following:

Does labor come into play?

Labor costs charged by the hour or at a fixed rate depending in the value of the project.

What about tools and materials?

A carpenter near you will factor in the materials needed for your project. You may have to purchase all required materials, while the carpenter will typically provide their own tools.

Does the homeowner need to do anything for worksite preparation?

If your worksite is difficult to access or it makes the carpenter’s work harder, carpenters may charge more or spend more time on the job.

There are typically three types of carpenters.

  • Rough carpenters: offer structural related work such as framing a house, building outdoor structures, or installing features in the home.
  • Finish carpenters: focus on more specific tasks such as doors, furniture, and windows.
  • Repairers: carry out general repairs to structures around the home.

Why hire a carpenter near me?

Their widespread roles and abilities make any project within the home much easier to carry out. If you’re building a new structure, they construct the outer frame and ensure that it’s structurally sound. They also carry out smaller-scale repairs to various objects around the home. Make sure you work with a carpenter near you who has experience and is friendly to customers.
