Essential duties:

  • Collaborating with principal Investigators and project team members to gather study data requirements

Position Summary

The Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) at VA Portland Health Care System is seeking to hire a full-time experienced Biostatistician. The Biostatistician provides support to multiple research teams on a range of health services research projects intended to advance scientific understanding of issues related to common and important health care problems and conditions that affect Veterans. Ongoing projects within CIVIC are related to strategies to enhance Veteran-clinician collaboration, suicide prevention, care coordination, COVID-19, traumatic brain injury, home-based primary care, opioids and pain, shared-decision making, cancer screening, and palliative care.

The Biostatistician will collaborate with and provide consultation to Principal Investigators at CIVIC, with some work to be done with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) (possible faculty appointment at OHSU depending on education and experience). General responsibilities include providing study design and methodology guidance to investigators, conducting power analysis calculations to inform grant applications, as well as data management, programming and statistical analysis activities for reports, manuscripts, and other publications. The Biostatistician will collaborate with an active group of investigators, other statisticians, data analysts, and research staff. This position involves working as a team member, requiring excellent and effective oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Statistical collaboration including project management, data management, and statistical programming/analysis.
  • Partner with other investigators to write and develop grant applications, empirical manuscripts, and statistical reports.

(01/26/22) Implementation Project Coordinator - Seattle, WA



Investigators at Department of Veterans Affairs Puget Sound Health Care System, Seattle Division are seeking a full-time Implementation Project Coordinator to work on the TelePain Evaluation, Metrics, & Pain Outcomes (TEMPO) Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) Partnered Evaluation Initiative.

TelePain is a virtual interdisciplinary pain management program utilizing a hub-and-spoke delivery model. The goal of TelePain is to bring specialty pain treatment to rural areas and promote equitable access to care. The model was created and piloted in the Pacific Northwest. Starting in October 2021, 11 regions covering 32 U.S. states will be building new, or expanding on existing, TelePain programs. This position will primarily work with new TelePain hub sites across the country as well as TEMPO research staff. Most work will be virtual meetings across all U.S. time zones, although occasionally travel to implementation sites should be expected.

The Implementation Project Coordinator will be an employee of VA Puget Sound’s Health Services Research & Development Center of Innovation.

Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Works closely with implementation facilitators on internal and external communication, meeting details, and logistics
  • Maintain stakeholder meeting notes and event schedules
  • Coordinate meetings with the TelePain Implementation team and national stakeholders
  • Build and foster relationships with hub and spoke site clinicians and leaders
  • Oversee and track site implementation activities and deliverable development
  • Ensure all project documents are stored in the appropriate document repository, including the TelePain SharePoint and internal servers

    • Experience in health research, data collection, methodology and implementation
    • Experience with practice facilitation
    • Experience in specialty care and/or virtual/telehealth care settings
    • Experience with chronic pain treatment and management
  • Comfortable facilitating and participating in virtual meetings
  • Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage one’s own time, develop systems to track all aspects of a complex implementation work, and work independently to keep the study on track

  • Ability to discuss chronic pain, opioid use disorder, and mental health with health care providers and Veterans in a neutral, non-judgmental way
  • Familiarity with research administration, such as managing human subjects and other research-related approvals (helpful but not required)
  • Interest in chronic pain and health disparities research
  • Proficiency in Microsoft PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Access

Desired qualifications:

Position Summary

We seek a motivated and independent Research Project Manager for a full-time position to assist Principal Investigator (PI) Dr. Denise Hynes and her team in the Center to Improve Veteran Involvement in Care (CIVIC) at the VA Portland Health Care System (Portland, Oregon). The Research Project Manager will provide support to multiple research projects focused on care management and outcomes for chronic conditions that affect military veterans. Studies are led out of the Portland VA and involve collaboration with other VA and academic partners across the US.

Specific research projects topics are related to care coordination impacts on outcomes for patients with high-risk conditions, Veteran and provider perceptions of integrated care, and long-term outcomes of COVID. These research projects employ a health services research framework and typically include use of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Current projects are observational and future intervention projects are planned. The ideal candidate will have experience with project management for observational studies, surveys, multisite studies, health services research interventions, and/or pragmatic clinical trials.

Responsibilities

The primary responsibility is to manage and organize specific projects and/or project components within larger studies led by the PI. Specific responsibilities may include:

  • Project management across multiple research projects that include secondary data analysis and prospective data collection, including a national survey of Veterans and a provider survey
  • Maintaining a research study tracking database, overseeing recruitment of research participants, preparation of study approval documents
  • Supervising research assistants
  • Communication and coordination with other study staff and collaborators, including co-investigators, data analysts, biostatisticians, and operational partners
  • Developing study standard operating procedures and ensuring study activities are being conducted with fidelity to research protocols
  • Contributing to the writing and preparation of scholarly manuscripts for scientific journals and presentations of study findings at professional meetings.

Experience

Minimum Requirements:

The San Francisco VA (SFVA) Health Care System is hiring a Program Specialist (GS9) for the Million Veteran Program (MVP). SFVA is one of over 50 recruitment sites for MVP (www.mvp.va.gov), which is a national research program to learn how genes, lifestyle, and military exposures affect health and illness. We are seeking to expand recruitment from the San Francisco VA to outpatient VA clinics in Oakland, Santa Rosa, and Clearlake. The position requires a combination of general health research knowledge and experience.

Key Duties:

  • Assist the Local Site Investigator with the coordination of the Million Veteran Program (MVP) operations for the San Francisco VA
  • Serve as the primary point of contact and manage the day-to-day activities of the study (e.g., recruitment, data collection)
  • Schedule study visits and ensure biospecimen collection and shipment adheres to program protocols
  • Directly enroll patients in the study (collect research questionnaires, obtain informed consent, explain blood draw procedure)

  • Experience working on clinical trials or prior experience leading/organizing a large research study. Knowledge of medical treatment settings and of the methods and techniques used to plan and conduct research or implementation
  • Knowledge and experience specific to working with diverse and vulnerable populations (e.g., veterans; older adults; individuals who have medical, physical, and cognitive impairments).

Summary

The Cooperative Studies Program Epidemiology Center (CSPEC) at the Durham, NC Veterans Affairs Medical Center is recruiting for a Master’s and/or PhD level Biostatistician. The position is a full-time (40 hours per week) federal, time limited appointment that is renewable. Benefits include insurance, sick and annual leave (including all federal holidays), and retirement fund.

Location: Durham, NC. Up to 50% telework may be considered for this position pending performance during trial period.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Collect, organize, manage, analyze, and interpret highly specialized healthcare data from large databases. Exercise extensive technical judgment to interpret the existing documentation, assess additional information needed, select sources of appropriate data, and adapt existing systems to new requirements.
  • Conduct statistical analyses of research data using SAS. Experience with R and MPlus will also be useful.

  • Assist with preparation and dissemination of statistical results in the form of technical report, manuscript, abstract, and presentation development, including developing, proofreading, and editing research materials and making recommendations to senior staff regarding their clarity, organization, and layout.

The VET Registry is a collection of data from over 14,000 Vietnam-era Veteran twins and more than 3,400 selected family members. That data comes from more than 30 studies and includes biospecimens from over 1,800 individuals, and is used in research studies to understand factors that affect the health and well-being of Veterans.

The NVVLS Registry is a collection of data from over 2,300 Vietnam-Era Veterans, obtained over two data collection timepoints: the National Vietnam Veterans Readjustment Study (NVVRS) in 1984 and the National Vietnam Veterans Longitudinal Study (NVVLS) in 2012. The Seattle ERIC acquired stewardship of the NVVRS and NVVLS data in 2015, and modified it to function as the NVVLS Registry, which includes 1,450 Veterans who participated in both timepoints.    

The Research Assistants will provide operational support under the direction of the Vietnam-Era Registries Program Manager. 

Key duties:

  • Working with the Vietnam-Era Registries team to support day-to-day operational activities
    • Assisting with the development of recruitment materials
    • Assisting with IRB documentation including completing applications, organizing, and filing records

    Principal Duties and Responsibilities 

    The Statistical Programmer works under the guidance of a clinical trial Biostatistician. The Biostatistician is responsible for planning and overseeing trial activities, including protocol writing and submission, data processing, statistical analysis, report writing, and oversight of clinical trial quality requirements.

    The Statistical Programmer is responsible for the following duties:

    • Implement analyses specified in the protocol or the Statistical Analysis Plan (SAP) while working under the guidance of the study Biostatistician.
    • Write SAS programs to generate tables, listings, and figures and analysis datasets.
    • Organize and summarize results using tabular or graphic representation as well as narrative description. Review analytical results for accuracy and completeness.     • Review and provide feedback on deliverables including but not limited to: SAP; table, listing, and figure shells; data management plans; electronic data entry screens; and case report forms; and other related documents.

    • Develop standard macros and/or tools in SAS for data analysis and reporting.

They coordinate interaction and cooperation between the research study site investigators, site coordinators, the CSPCC, the Study Chairpersons, the Albuquerque Research Pharmacy (CSPCRPCC), any outside funding agencies and any technical support facilities required for the studies.

    The incumbent will serve as a resource person regarding details of the study protocol and facilitates training for study personnel to ensure they follow the study protocol and data collection procedures. They assist in the development and distribution of the study operations manual and draft study correspondence and ensure that appropriate tasks and study documentation are completed in the sequence established by CSP. The Project Manager prepares agendas and materials for study meetings in consultation with study team and participates in study conference calls and attends study meetings. They serve as a recorder of minutes and prepares draft reports of meetings, when needed. The incumbent serves as primary liaison with all participating study sites in securing both initial and yearly approvals from Institutional Review Board of record and Research & Development Committees. They maintain documentation of the Study Group, Executive Committee, Data Monitoring Committee and HRC reports.     MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Baccalaureate degree in a science or health-related field, e.g., biology, chemistry, psychology, public health is minimum requirement, but advanced degree is preferred such as a MS or MPH. The advanced degree can be in another field such as project management if the baccalaureate degree fulfills the minimum requirement.
    • Able to oversee the day-to-day function of a multi-site study and to independently deal with many of the challenges that arise.
    • Able to work independently and prioritize numerous demands and deal with myriad of complex challenges
