* This round-table discussion brings together the authors of the special issue of the 𝑱𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒂𝒍 𝒐𝒇 𝑰𝒏𝒅𝒐-𝑷𝒂𝒄𝒊𝒇𝒊𝒄 𝑨𝒇𝒇𝒂𝒊𝒓𝒔 entitled "Myanmar Crisis."

On 1 February 2021, a day before the Parliament was to swear in members elected in the country’s free-and-fair 2020 election, the Tatmadaw, Myanmar’s military, deposed the democratically elected members of the country's ruling party, the National League for Democracy. The country’s acting president declared a year-long state of emergency and transferred power to Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing. The junta declared the results of the November 2020 general election invalid and stated its intent to hold a new election at the end of the state of emergency. The Tatmadaw has detained many of democratic leaders, protests erupted, and the junta has met all resistance with a brutal crackdown, leaving hundreds, perhaps thousands, dead and many others wounded, jailed, or in hiding.

Power Play in the Indo Pacific: Great Powers to Small States

PAUL J. BOLT is a professor of political science at the United States Air Force Academy. He received his BA from Hope College and his MA and PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Bolt has taught at Zhejiang University and Baicheng Normal College in the People’s Republic of China as well as the University of Illinois. In 2009–10 he served as a Fulbright Scholar at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His most recent book is the coauthored China, Russia, and Twenty-First Century Global Geopolitics (Oxford, 2018).

JAMES M. “JIM” SMITH is director of the Air Force Institute for National Security Studies housed within the Department of Political Science at the US Air Force Academy. On active duty he served as an air force pilot and operational planner. He also served academic assignments at the Air Force Special Operations School, the Air Command and Staff College, and West Point’s Department of Social Sciences, where he was also associate dean for academic research. Smith holds a BS from USAFA, an MS from the University of Southern California, and a doctorate from the University of Alabama.

BRAD ROBERTS is director of the Center for Global Security Research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California. From April 2009 to March 2013 he served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for nuclear and missile defense policy. Prior to joining the Obama administration, Roberts was a member of the research staff at the Institute for Defense Analyses, an adjunct professor at George Washington University, and editor of the Washington Quarterly. He has a BA from Stanford University, an MSc from the London School of Economics and Political Science, and a doctorate from Erasmus University, Rotterdam.

ANDREW SCOBELL is a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation’s Washington,DC, office, an adjunct professor of Asian Studies at Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service, and a Distinguished Fellow at the
