Saucy, tension-filled westerns have become unicorns in this day and age of bankable big box office franchises. I'm all for fun special effects, but too often it comes at the expense of a good story. And that's why I so enjoyed Cassidy Red...it's a good story testing love and loyalties, with a strong female protagonist that's set in the wild west; a vista that's all but disappeared from film-making. What's even more refreshing is writer/director Matt Knudsen's love affair with film which shines through each hand selected focal point and shot perspective, an homage to the directors he was most influenced by, with a genre that's just too entertaining to let slip away. Shout out as well to the parlay between Jessy Knudsen and Gregory Zaragoza, good old fashioned narrative push and pull fun. Oh - and the score...the MUSIC is amaaaaazing! Mad props to Andrew Carol, mark my words, he'll be huge. All in all, it's just a pleasure to watch.

The story line is good but the way it is laid out is tedious. The filming is amateurish, the acting is hit and miss, and the story is predictable. The flashbacks did not work well and the story telling just seemed to make it more tedious. The results would have been better in chronological order, but then it would have been a much shorter movie. A good editor could cut out half the movie with better results. The only reason I watched it to the end was because it was a university project so I allowed for the level of expertise.

I can understand that the writers and directors were making a film for some artistic expression, i.e. UCLA FA program - but I think art that is couched in a cliche, such as this story, should at least have its own point to make. What we have here is a love story without real depth, as Jakob is virtually non-participatory. We have the inexplicable father self-destructing and a self-immolating mother, and a sister whose purpose begs the viewer’s understanding.
The writers then place this fragile motif within the cliche of Western Bad Guy complete with inexplicable need to control everyone, gratuitous violence, cookie cutter climax, and then, just to imitate a Shakespearean tragedy - we kill off the main character. The piano player (Jakob, duh) fallen-girl-renewed is a frail attempt to put a parentheses around the entire plot.
See - this is why Prime Video, pushing for streaming (cut the cable cord - an oxymoron, as without the cable cord - no streaming) hides the truth about today’s available filmatic material - it doesn’t even come near the excellence of 1940s - 50s celluloid movies, because anyone with an IPhone can make a film - which produces way too many people thinking they are artists - but they ain’t.
