Just because I’m able to read US English doesn’t mean I don’t get mad every time Wordle misspells a 6 letter word to make it 5 letters.

I suppose this is also a good time to mention that I'm also switching over to . Having proven my ability to do terrible things with WordPress over the years, it's time to show that I can do the same on a completely different platform. 😄

I suppose this is a good opportunity to let people know that I'll be running @Tumblr personally for a while, and it will be my top priority within @automattic. There is a ton of opportunity for improvements the community has asked for and deserves, and I'm excited to work on it. twitter.com/TheAtlantic/st…

We should turn every Tumblr post into an NFT, just to see how mad everyone gets. There’s a good chance the community backlash would be to destroy all cryptocurrencies. Only one way to find out! 🙃

so you can’t run a music festival in NSW but Hillsong ran this (note the total absence of masks) last night. sure, it looks like the lamest music festival of all time but it looks like a music festival nonetheless. @NSWHealth what gives?

This thread presents a really compelling argument for the Metaverse concept that I hadn't previously considered. Honestly, if Zuck's presentation had've been more like this, I would've been on board much earlier.

But, none of that matters if we can't fix the underlying societal problems that are driving people to look for an escape. Maybe we can fix that with legislation.

It’s like this: Technology will not solve political problems, in particular imbalances in power and wealth. Never has. The essential first step in decentralizing the Web is antitrust litigation.

web3 has a lot of "get rich quick" energy to it, and I get the attraction of an escape from hyper-capitalism. We don't have to compete with that, though. I do believe that “make an honest living” is a stronger argument for most people than “get rich by burning down the world”.

I don't know what the solution is. Asking individuals to fight back against the Venture Capital backed marketing machine pushing web3 is obviously unreasonable. Is there an alternative, though? Any tech billionaires who would work against the $$$ that web3 could make for them?

Branding and marketing matters, however. web3 is offering a shiny all-in-one package of the many (relatively small) experiments and ideas that have been running for years. That sucks for everyone who's been pushing in good faith all these years.

It's very easy to look at web3 with the attitude of "the parts that are good aren't original, and the parts that are original aren't good." For every example of a web3 innovation, there's an example of someone already doing it. Micropayments. IndieWeb. The Federated Web.

- Scolding people for engaging in web3 stuff isn't going to work, same as scolding people for getting into MAGA/QAnon/etc doesn't work. It only isolates them further. - Shifting the direction of web3 is probably going to need reasonable people to engage in good faith.

Where I think Anil is right: - The web3 movement is reaching (or has possibly already reached) a critical mass, where ignoring it won't make it go away. Or, "too big to fail". - There are smart people inside the web3 world who are genuinely trying to do the right thing.

Much like every take on web3 (including my own), Anil is both right and wrong in this thread. Much of the discourse around web3 is highly subjective, quite emotive, and extremely divisive.

I’ve been meaning to write about this for a while, but I’ll just leave this as a placeholder for now: most vocal criticism of web3 sucks right now. Not because it’s necessarily wrong on a factual basis, but because it’s wildly ineffective & ignores context.

Has anyone suggested the really bad idea of an open source license that involves putting your code on the bockcharm and when companies check it out to use it, they pay you in ethernet points?

This would be ridiculously fiddly to do with web2-style APIs, but it's quite straightforward with web3-style identity management.

Ha! One of the things that's really powerful is that the membership is decoupled from a specific WordPress install which means that you and i could use the same one of both our blogs (creating a bundle) without having to share of user lists for example.
