It’s hard to believe that we have already reached the end of the year. This edition is our last newsletter for the year, but December is still one of our busiest months. Keep reading to learn about the latest news and resources from the WordPress community for your local meetup groups!

📣 Join us today for State of the Word 2021

The stage is almost ready!

State of the Word 2021 will be livestreamed today (December 14), between 5 and 7 pm ET / 10 pm – 12 am (December 15) UTC, from New York City.

The keynote will be followed by a live Question and Answer session with Matt. If you did not have a chance to submit a question, you can always ask during the event via the YouTube chat. You are also encouraged to join the conversation on social media using the hashtag #StateOfTheWord.

❤️ Help spread the word about WordPress 5.9

Expected to be released on January 25th, WordPress 5.9 is a major releaseMajor Release A set of releases or versions having the same major version number may be collectively referred to as “X.Y” -- for example version 5.2.x to refer to versions 5.2, 5.2.1, and all other versions in the 5.2. (five dot two dot) branch of that software. Major Releases often are the introduction of new major features and functionality. that marks the first version of Full Site Editing features, as well as the introduction of blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. themes. WordPress 5.9 Beta 2 is already available for testing. Your feedback on this and the upcoming BetaBeta A pre-release of software that is given out to a large group of users to trial under real conditions. Beta versions have gone through alpha testing in-house and are generally fairly close in look, feel and function to the final product; however, design changes often occur as part of the process. 3 is always appreciated.

While awaiting the final release, we would also love your support to spread the word about WordPress 5.9 among your meetup groups. There are many different ways for you to get involved: from planning a release-focused meetup to helping organize 5.9 testing sprints.

Past WordCamps

  • 🇪🇸 WordCamp Sevilla, the first in-person WordCamp after 21 months, took place last weekend (December 11-12). This was a fantastic opportunity for the Spanish WordPress community to meet again and enjoy different networking activities outdoors.
  • 🇹🇼 WordCamp Taiwan and 🇧🇷 WordCamp São Paulo were also held online recently.

📚 Join the Learn WordPress initiative

Did you know you can use the Learn WordPress content for your meetup events? Organizing a social learning space based on any of the Learn WordPress workshops can be a fun way to share knowledge and learn more about different WordPress topics with others.

Welcome to the November 2021 edition of our monthly Meetup Organizer newsletter. 

It’s hard to believe we’re almost approaching 2022. But, although we’re nearing the end of the year, we still have some exciting events coming your way. So, keep reading to learn more about the latest updates and resources from the WordPress community for your local MeetUp groups!

💡💭 Share your input on Global Community Team goals for 2022!

Every year, we’ve gathered and narrowed down goals for the Global Community Team. With 2022 around the corner, we’d love to hear your thoughts on what we should focus on next year. 

There’s currently an open call for suggestions—please drop your ideas by December 6, 2021, following which we’ll schedule brainstorming sessions to zoom in on the high-impact goals.

🌍🎪 What’s happening with WordPress events?

Socializing post-pandemic might involve a learning curve, but we’re glad to see some in-person WordCamps scheduled for 2022, and we hope to see you all organize many more! 

Many of you may be looking forward to finally meeting face to face again. Still, we strongly encourage you to practice caution and follow these safety guidelines as you plan/attend your WordPress Meetup events. Moreover, the Community Team has shared how to host hassle-free WordCamps in person and protect yourself legally.

With that in mind, let’s move on to the fun stuff. 

WordCamps on the horizon

Past WordCamps

🇪🇸 WordCamp Spain 2021 and 🇮🇹 WordCamp Italia 2021 took place recently, and they were both fantastic!
Spain kicked things up a notch with an excellent late-night show, which was a highlight of the event. Italy also had a successful event with multiple platinum, gold, and supporter sponsors, 23 speakers, and 12 organizations.

🗣️ Diverse speaker training

#WPDiversity sessions continue into November 2021, with workshops for underrepresented communities and WordPress organizers—we’d love for you to join!

  • Allyship for WordPress event organizers AMER/EMEA, a two-hour interactive watch party where you can learn to create diverse, welcoming WordPress events for your community. This training session will be held on Wednesday, November 17, 2021.
  • “How to Own Your Expertise & Start Speaking at WordPress Events Southeast to Southern Asia,” a watch party aimed to help those from marginalized and underrepresented groups speak at a meetup or WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. in South Asian countries like the Philippines, India, and Indonesia, among others. This session will take place on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

📚 Join the Learn WordPress initiative

We wanted to remind you about the Learn WordPress initiative, where meetup organizers can use content from the learning repository of learn.wordpress.org to lead a social learning space. New workshops, lesson plans, and courses are added to Learn WordPress frequently, so keep an eye out on the platform to stay updated on the latest content.

🗞 News from the WordPress Community

  • WordPress 5.8.2 is now available. This security and maintenance release features two bug fixes, and one security fix. 
  • Go/no-go for WordPress 5.9 features was announced in mid-October. All the proposed features will likely make it into the release. 
  • Gutenberg 11.8 was released as well.
  • The 2021 WordPress Annual Survey is live! Please take a few moments to respond, so your WordPress experience is reflected in the results.
  • Many teams, such as  Core, Community, Themes, Accessibility, Support, Training, and Hosting, opened their call for team representatives last month, and more are coming soon. Please submit your votes for Community Team reps!
  • The Community Team is close to finalizing the Global Sponsorship Program for 2022, which will be announced shortly.
  • Version 18.5 of WordPress for iOS and Android is available for testing.
  • The AccessibilityAccessibility Accessibility (commonly shortened to a11y) refers to the design of products, devices, services, or environments for people with disabilities. The concept of accessible design ensures both “direct access” (i.e. unassisted) and “indirect access” meaning compatibility with a person’s assistive technology (for example, computer screen readers). (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Accessibility) Team would like feedback on a new GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ Pull request that announces formatting changes or screen readers.

🎭 New Meetup.com Features for Meetup Organizers

Meetup.com has announced some exciting new features to give better support to community organizers: 

  • COVID-19 safety measures for organizers: A new section has been added to the event scheduler page in Meetup.com titled “COVID-19 safety measures” where organizers can set guidelines such as vaccinations, mask policy, venue types, etc. Read more on this post from the Meetup blog.
  • Add topics for Meetup events: Previously organizers could set topics for Meetup groups, now you can add topics for individual meetup events too. Some organizers may see a list of default topics to choose from when they schedule a new event, which they can modify. The feature is still being tested and may not be available to all organizers yet. You can read all about this feature in the Meetup blog.
  • Viewing events in your preferred time zone: As many meetup groups have been gathering online, their events have been attracting attendees from all around the world! Attendees can now view online events in their preferred time zone. In-person events will continue to be shown in the event’s time zone.

If your local authority allows in-person events and if vaccines OR testing are freely available, you may be able to organize an in-person WordPress meetup. Just fill out our in-person meetup decision checklist and follow the recommendations. Check out our handbook for more.

💰 Proposal for the 2022 Global Sponsorship Program

The Community Team kicked-off discussions on the updated 2022 Global sponsorship program, and is inviting feedback. Similar to the 2021 program, global sponsors will get access to a single sponsorship package to support Meetup groups.WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. sponsorship (for all camps in a quarter) will be available as an add-on, billed quarterly. The team aims to finalize the proposal by October 28, 2021.

 🌍🎪 WordPress Event Updates

As the world is slowly returning to normalcy, in-person WordPress events are also coming back. The Community Team has opened up pathways for in-person WordCamps and Meetups, in regions where it is safe to do so, even though most meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook. are still online. To support WordCamp organizers and facilitate hassle-free in-person WordCamps, the Community Team recently introduced additional legal protections such as ticket disclaimers and an insurance policy.

Sign up for the following Upcoming Diverse Speaker Training Events

  • Allyship for WordPress event organizers AMER/EMEA November 17, 2021 at 6-8pm UTC / 1-3pm ET / 10-12pm PT. Learn how to be a good ally and to create welcoming and diverse WordPress Meetups and WordCamps for your WordPress community.  
  • How to Own Your Expertise & Start Speaking at WordPress Events Asia #WPDiversity. November 27, 2021 at 7-8.30am UTC / 1500H-1630 GMT+8 / 1230H-1400H IST.
    Aimed at community organizers from Southeast to Southern Asia, this workshop focuses on how to encourage people from underrepresented groups (in terms of gender, race, class, caste, sexuality, ability, age, etc.) to speak at WordPress meetups and WordCamps.

WordCamp US 2021 concludes
One of the biggest WordPress events – WordCamp US 2021 was held on October 1, 2021. The online event offered a unique online experience that united WordPress fans around the world. The camp, which was supported by nearly 20 organizers, sold more than 3,600 tickets, had 18 speakers, and 27 sponsors. Catch the event replay on its website. The sessions will be available on WordPress.tv soon. 

WordPress Translation Day 2021 Celebrations ran for 30 days
WordPress contributors from around the world joined hands  by translating WordPress into their own languages for the entire month of September as part of WordPress Translation Day celebrations. The celebrations consisted of a host of global and local events, translation sprints, and discussion groups. News from local events and stories highlighting notable polyglots contributors will be coming soon. Check out the WP Translation Day website for links to video recordings and more.

In-person do_actiondo_action do_action hackathons are community-organised events that are focussed on using WordPress to give deserving charitable organisations their own online presence. Learn more on doaction.org. charity hackathons are back
The Community Team shared new guidelines for the return of in-person do_action hackathons in regions where local events are allowed. In short, community organizers can plan in-person do_action hackathons either in regions with reduced COVID spread OR exclusively or fully vaccinated/recently tested (negative)/ recently recovered folks in regions where vaccination and testing are freely available.

🔙⛺️ [Announcement] Guidelines for returning to In-person WordCamps

The Community Team published new guidelines for returning to in-person WordCamps in regions where in-person events are allowed by the local public health authority. You can now organize in-person WordCamps for fully vaccinated, recently tested negative, or recently recovered folks (in the last 3 months) — provided your region passes the in-person safety checklist OR if vaccines and/or COVID testing are accessible to all. If your region does not meet these criteria, please continue to organize online events.

The month-long International WordPress Translation Day celebration is happening this month! 🔙⛺️ Returning to safe in-person WordCamps

The Community Team has published a proposal to discuss how the WordPress community can return to in-person WordCamps. The proposal shares ideas on organizing small in-person events in areas that meet the in-person meetup safety checklist or with vaccination or testing freely available, following local safety guidelines with additional recommendations for organizing safe events. Please share your thoughts in the comments on that post.

One of the most exciting WordPress events – WordCamp US, is back as a single-day online event on October 1, 2021. Organizers of the event have several exciting plans in the pipeline, including networking opportunities, speaker sessions, workshops, and more. Gear up for WordPress Translation Day Celebrations in September 2021!

📣🎪 [Announcement] New guidelines for returning to in-person meetups

The Community Team has announced new guidelines for returning to in-person WordPress events. You can now organize an in-person event if your local public health authority allows in-person events and your region passes the in-person safety checklist. Additionally, if your area does not pass the in-person safety checklist (but if your local public health authorities allow in-person events), you can organize in-person meetup events for fully vaccinated, recently tested negative, or recently recovered folks (in the last 3 months). If your region does not meet these guidelines, please keep organizing online events until the situation improves. Check out our 2021: Returning to in-person meetups handbook for more information.

This image shows a flow chart of the conditions that would support local community organizers holding in-person meetup events. If there are vaccines or testing available to all, then organizers can hold in-person meetups for those who are fully vaccinates, recently tested negative, or recently recovered from COVID-19. If vaccines and testing are not freely available, then online meetups should continue. If the region passes the in-person safety checklist, then in-person meetups for everyone are ok!

Does your region meet guidelines in our safety checklist? If not, does your location have vaccinations or testing freely available? If your answer to both questions is “yes,” fill up the safety checklist (you need not wait for a reply from us) and organize an in-person meetup for your group! If not, keep organizing online events until the situation improves in your area.

WordPress 5.8 is a major releaseMajor Release A set of releases or versions having the same major version number may be collectively referred to as “X.Y” -- for example version 5.2.x to refer to versions 5.2, 5.2.1, and all other versions in the 5.2. (five dot two dot) branch of that software. Major Releases often are the introduction of new major features and functionality. that goes out on July 20th.  Beta 1 and Beta 2 versions of the release are already available. We request meetup organizers to help us build excitement for the release by organizing an online discussion or a testing sprint on version 5.8. You can also email your group members to let them know all about the release.

One of the biggest and most exciting WordPress events – WordCamp Europe 2021, was held successfully from June 7-9, 2021. A team of 40 members organized the event, which had 3200+ registrations, 42 speakers, and 43 sponsors. You will find more details in the event recap. One of the event highlights was this Gutenberg demo hosted by Matías Ventura and Matt Mullenweg. You can catch the event recording on their YouTube channel, and videos of the event will soon be available on WordPress.tv as well!

Proposals on returning to in-person WordPress events

The Community Team has opened up a discussion on the path to in-person WordCamps and requests community members to share feedback. We have also published a separate proposal on adding vaccination status to the in-person meetup checklist as a criterion to organize in-person WordPress meetupsMeetup Meetup groups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Learn more about Meetups in our Meetup Organizer Handbook.. All meetup organizers are invited to share their thoughts on these proposals in the comments. Please note: These proposals are still being discussed. WordPress meetups in most regions and all WordCamps will continue to be held online until further notice.

Full Site Editing updates for Meetup Groups

The sixth call for testing as part of the Full Site Editing (FSE) outreach program is out! As we’ve reached a full year of online Meetup events, we would like to get your feedback on WordPress meetups in 2020. WordPress 5.7 and your meetup group

The latest major WordPress release  – version 5.7, “Esperanza,” came out on 9 March 2021. The release comes with some neat blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. editor improvements such as inserter drag and drop for blocks & block patterns and improved reusable blocks. Additionally, it features a simpler default color palette, single-click HTTPHTTP HTTP is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol. HTTP is the underlying protocol used by the World Wide Web and this protocol defines how messages are formatted and transmitted, and what actions Web servers and browsers should take in response to various commands. to HTTPSHTTPS HTTPS is an acronym for Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure. HTTPS is the secure version of HTTP, the protocol over which data is sent between your browser and the website that you are connected to. The 'S' at the end of HTTPS stands for 'Secure'. It means all communications between your browser and the website are encrypted. Decision-making checklist for in-person meetups
The Community Team has published handbook pages and a decision-making checklist for organizers to restart in-person meetups in areas where it is safe to do so (e.g., countries such as New Zealand, Australia, and Taiwan, where there are lower COVID-19 risks). However, WordPress meetups and WordCamps in most parts of the world will remain online due to  COVID-19.
