PyCon 2018 Call for Proposals is Open!

It’s here! PyCon 2018’s Call for Proposals has officially opened for talks, tutorials, posters, and education summit presentations. PyCon is made by you, so we need you to share what you’re working on, how you’re working on it, what you’ve learned, what you’re learning, and so much more. Before we dive in, the deadlines: Tutorial proposals are due November 24, 2017 . Talk, Poster, and Education Summit proposals are due January 3, 2018 . Who should write a proposal? Everyone! If you’re reading this post, you should write a proposal. PyCon is about uniting and building the Python community, and we won’t advance as an open community if we’re not open with each other about what we’ve learned throughout our time in it. It isn’t about being the smartest one in the room, so we don’t just pick all of the expert talks. It’s about helping everyone move together. “A rising tide lifts all boats,” if you will. We need beginner, intermediate, and advanced proposals on all sorts of topics

Update on talks & tutorials, program committee, and registration!

Last week we wrapped up another great call for talks and tutorials , leading to a ton of excellent proposals for our Program Committee to work through in order to shape the PyCon 2015 schedule. I can already tell that it's going to be a great one; another one of those years where we could make several full conference schedules out of this body of proposals. Tutorials Tutorials saw a 40% increase in proposals, up to 99 submissions. This is the biggest jump I've seen, as tutorial proposal numbers have been relatively steady over the years, with small rises or falls here or there. This shouldn't come as a surprise given the growth of Python's use in education, both institutionally and otherwise. We've always gotten a bunch of full-time educators interested in sharing their knowledge with the Python community, and we're getting more. The majority of instructors, however, come from outside of academia, with everything from book authors to project creators being

PyCon 2015 Call for Proposals is open!

The PyCon organizers are thrilled to announce the opening of PyCon 2015's Call for Proposals for talks, tutorials, and posters! We've seen a lot of growth in response to our CFP over the years, and our program committee is expecting a ton of proposals this time around. In 2012, you put us to work with 374 talk proposals and followed up the next year with 458. For 2014, 107 more talk submissions came in, for a jump to 565. We'll be accepting proposals through September 15 for talks and tutorials, and posters are accepted through November 1 . We want everyone to be a part of making PyCon what it is, which is why we invite everyone to submit proposals, and we invite everyone to be a part of the program committee. It's your PyCon, not mine. Whether you started with Python yesterday or you've been writing it since the 90s, everyone has different experiences, different knowledge, and a different story to tell. This is why we aim to strike a balance between beginner,

Talk and Tutorial Call Closes, Reviews Begin

As the September 15 deadline for talk and tutorial proposals approached, the Python community contributed yet another record setting group of submissions. Going from PyCon 2012 to 2013, we saw an increase of 80 submissions, bringing 458 proposals through the review system. It made for a lot of work by our volunteer program committee last year, but they did a great job in putting together a fantastic schedule, and our speakers did an amazing job on stage to make the best PyCon yet. For PyCon 2014, you, the community, topped last year by 107, bringing us to a total of 565 talk proposals ! This is simply incredible, especially as we've seen proposals from a wider range of people than ever. We've gotten a lot of proposals from first-timers, including more students than past years. Several user groups got together over the last few months to run brainstorming sessions, and they've produced some excellent proposals. The outreach groups in our community have done the same, and

One Month Until Proposals Are Due!

We're now inside the final month of our Call for Proposals for PyCon 2014, with talk and tutorial proposals due on September 15. The conference takes place April 9-17 in Montréal, but we've been hard at work to prepare the event, and we're looking forward to putting together another great schedule. To do this, we need you, the community, to submit your best ideas for talks! We know you're all up to awesome stuff -- we see it all the time. The Python world is as active as ever, with great projects popping up all the time on Hacker News and Reddit, then passed around on Twitter, and making their way to the mailing lists. So not only should you submit a proposal, you should tell your peers to submit them as well! We want to put together not just a schedule we like, but one that you'll like even more, so we can always use help from the audience by bringing us the people and topics you want to see on stage. If you have any topic ideas or speakers you want to se

PyCon 2014 - Summer Update

PyCon 2014 us.pycon.org/2014 Hello, Python Community! I figured it was about time for a PyCon 2014 status update from the chair. It's pretty long, but can be summed up with this call to action:  Please actively encourage all corners of our community and beyond to submit proposals for PyCon 2014 in Montréal. The deadlines are fast approaching. Do it now! Proposal Deadlines You can submit four different kinds of proposals for PyCon 2014. Please spread the word at your regional user group meetings, at other conferences, during outreach events, on twitter, and in blog posts, etc. 30 & 45 minute  talks  (deadline September 15th ) 5 minute  lightning talks  (deadline October 15th ) 3 hour  tutorials  (deadline September 15th ) posters  (deadline November 1st ) Brian Curtin has written a couple of great blog posts you can link to, more information can be found on the PyCon call for proposals page, and we have new logos you should feel free to use in b

PyCon 2014 Launches, Calls For Proposals

Originally announced as a press release at  http://www.marketwire.com/press-release/-1807968.htm On the heels of yet another sold out success in PyCon 2013, the conference organizers are happy to announce the new website and Call for Proposals for PyCon 2014. http://us.pycon.org/2014/ is now live and accepting talk, tutorial, and poster proposals for the April 9-17 conference taking place in Montréal, Quebec, Canada. The first time north of the border brings a change to the call: lightning talk proposals are now being accepted in advance. PyCon’s first trip into Canada, not to be confused with PyCon Canada, ventures into Quebec for a great week at the Palais des congrès de Montréal , in the Old Montréal area. Unlike years past, the conference center isn’t tied to a specific hotel, so the organizers have currently worked out group rates with the Hyatt Regency and Westin hotels in Montréal. Attendance for 2014 will be limited to 2000 attendees, and the organizers look forward to

EuroPython, PyCon AU open their Call for Proposals

Talk selections for PyCon 2013 were intense. We had a ton of submissions to wade through, and our three levels of review were jam packed with some really great proposals. Our expansion from 95 talks to 114 allowed us to take a few more that past years, but it couldn't include everyone. Of the 458 proposals we received, the batch was so good that we could be running two or three PyCons in parallel if that was possible. The community put out their best work and made it really hard for us on the program committee. It was a great problem to have, and we hope to see all of these talks given in some way throughout the year. As the conference season kicks off, consider proposing some of those awesome submissions to conferences around the world. Two CFPs were recently announced for summer conferences: EuroPython is taking place in Florence, Italy from July 1st through the 7th, and their call was opened a few weeks ago. They'll be accepting proposals through March 5th at  https://

Talk and Tutorial Proposals Due Tomorrow!

If you haven’t started writing your proposals yet, you still have time! The deadline for talk and tutorial proposals is Friday September 28. As long as it’s the 28th somewhere in the world, we’ll take your proposal and start the review process. Check out our “ speak at PyCon ” page as well as the Call for Proposals for the full details. If you need some help filling out your proposal, check out a sample proposal we wrote about SpacePug! From there, the program committee spends a lot of time reviewing and comparing proposals, with the goal of announcing the selected speakers by December 1 with a schedule to follow on December 15. It’s a lot of work but it’s rewarding and helps make PyCon better for everyone. If you’d like to help out, we’d love to have you: join the program committee today ! Registration opened last week and tickets are selling at a rapid pace, with a cap of 2500 tickets. We’re still in the early bird phase where you can save up to 25%, but keep in mind that only the

PyCon Proposals Due in Two Days!

Time is running out for you to submit your PyCon 2013 talk and tutorial proposals! They’re due on Friday September 28, as long as it’s still the 28th somewhere in the world. Check out the Call for Proposals for the full details. Talks are the mainstay of PyCon, running Friday March 15 through Sunday March 17. The last few years we’ve had a schedule of five simultaneous tracks totalling 95 talks, mostly comprised of 30 minute talks with a sprinkling of 45 minute sessions. We’ve been receiving a steady flow of proposals throughout the last few months, but we want more. In fact, we need more. PyCon isn’t successful without the great talks that you, the community, put together. The schedule has been very strong over the last few years due to the awesome work that everyone is doing, so give us your best and help build the best PyCon yet! Tutorials are a great way to share your knowledge in a classroom setting. Each session is three hours long, with two sessions per day on the two days p

SpacePug - a sample talk proposal

Along with PyCon's cadre of veteran speakers, we always need new ones. In fact, PyCon thrives on new speakers. They provide fresh perspectives, bring up new and interesting topics, and they can pass on their speaking experience to a new generation of conference speakers. We thought a good way to help that new generation would be to release some sample proposals. The first proposal is about SpacePug , a project about a space program that launches pugs into orbit. We think it's a good proposal, but it has some faults. After laying out the proposal using the same sections you'd need to fill out in a real proposal, we include a review and summary outlining areas that need some work. Like we said, the proposal isn't perfect, and it might not be the best format for every topic. Some topics are better served by proposals with in-depth outlines, while some work well with SuperPug's paragraph style. If you check out SuperPug, it even includes a small supplementary o

32 days left to submit PyCon proposals!

We're almost inside of one month until PyCon 2013 tutorial and talk proposals are due. Even this guy fully dressed in a pool with his laptop is ready to submit. Are you? Check out our Speak at PyCon page as well as the official Call for Proposals ! September 28, 2012 is the deadline to mark in your calendars.

What talks do you want to see at PyCon?

PyCon is a conference for the community. You're the audience. You're the speakers. You're the ones watching the videos. Now is your chance to speak up and let us know what you want to see. There are 37 days left to submit proposals for PyCon 2013 , so if you have a topic you want to hear about, let us know! We'll share the ideas with everyone and see if we can find speakers for everything and make this the best conference schedule yet. Some people have already started coming up with topic lists on their blogs. Daniel Greenfield put up a great post yesterday, with interest in seeing how Python is used in space exploration and research. Ned Batchelder started a thread this morning on Reddit to gauge interest in talks people want to see. He's interested in Stompy from Project Hexapod, the giant Python-powered robot. What are you interested in? Tweet us your ideas to @pycon or use the #pycon hashtag and we'll pull everything together. If you make a blo
