Actor Dennis Hopper gets first London exhibition - 4 years after death

Apocalypse Now star Dennis Hopper is set to get his first London photography exhibition, four years after his death. The show, entitled ‘The Lost Album, will be a rerun of an exhibition Hopper held in 1970 at the Fort Worth Art Centre in Texas, and will comprise the original 9.5x6.5in silver gelatin prints that were displayed over thirty years ago. Incredibly, the 400 prints were only found after Hopper’s death in 2010, having lain ‘lost’ since their first airing.

Dennis Hopper: The Lost Album will be held from 26th June to 19th October at The Royal Academy, London, and is sponsored by Nikon UK

They are simply point and shoot snaps of a bunch of people some actor knew. No thought went into them apart from maybe number 2.

Indeed, and I have to say I wasn't overly impressed. Lots of shots clearly showing efforts to find out what a camera can do (well, in film days the learning took longer and was more costly). Just very few photographically impressive shots, most of which you can see above. He new some famous guys, yes, and they are on some (rather few) of his photos. Maybe this justifies the visit for you. - Sorry having to say so, as I really appreciate his work as an actor.

It was certainly worth seeing from a historical perspective, but me too I have to admit I don't remember particular shots... but that doesn't mean anything. I wouldn't feel in the position to make a judgment here.

I think his role as the monstrous Frank in David Lynch's 'Blue Velvet' was his most powerful, but he was also excellent as the demented photographer in 'Apocalypse Now', appearing in his introductory scene with multiple 35mm Nikons slung about him. That scene will work even better now that I know he was actually a photographer.

Frank... What a powerful role. "I'll [blank] anything that moves." Blue Velvet is one of the most resonant vignettes of the juxtaposition of the tension of innocence/idyll and potential hidden horrors (hyperbolic). One of Lynch's finest contributions to cinema; a complex meditation on American existentialism.

I actually came across a book on his photography at our local book store and scanned through it . . . and I remember thinking to myself back then . . . man, this guy had the eye!

He was a well known photographer already, i remember seeing a lot of his photos of co-stars in various places a few years ago. He had that documentary style usually found in Magnum photographers.. very keen sense of composition indeed.

He had a show in NYC a few years before his passing. In the high profile Chelsea area. Had a chance to see him there while perusing the city. Too chicken to approach him though ;) Had no idea it was his show, till I entered a room with video monitors that had some of his films on it. Then someone said, "there's the photographer of the show" . I was like, where. They point to him (in person). It was a pleasant surprise.
