Updating == See also == on Gerrit/Code_review/Getting_reviews

In the 'see also' section Gerrit/Code review/Getting reviews#See also , there are two outdated links.

I wanted to change the links from http://www.gossamer-threads.com/ to https://lists.archive.carbon60.com/ because the gossamer-threads.com domain is now forwarding to a not relevant website.

But, I got an error (It seems that you're trying to add an external link to a page. ...)

Can someone change these links? Perhaps it is even better to link to archive.org

Jdforrester (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Hey there. I've replaced the links with links to our first-party archive, which are now stable, unlike in the old mailman2 times, AIUI.

There are quite a few links to that old third-party archive, sadly.

It's requested to substitute all text "名字空间" with "命名空间" in every page in language "zh". The word "namespace" was formally translated as "名字空间" initially, however after discussion it was changed to "命名空间". So please replace all texts in this wiki. Thanks.

PerfektesChaos (talkcontribs)

Sounds a bit like a task for translatewiki:, since many occurrences will result from a system message. That will result in global change of appearance.

Such things do need a kind of official approval by a reliable instance who can read and understand Chinese, since nobody likes that we display “Peking roasted duck”. I have no idea what is discussed on zh:Special:PermaLink.

SolidBlock (talkcontribs)

I mean, the translation has been changed in translatewiki and has taken effect globally. However, text in mediawiki.org articles does not change. It's hard to manually replace texts.

PerfektesChaos (talkcontribs)

Changing something that has been useful for almost two decades from one good solution into another good solution is confusing and disrupting for many users.

  • You have to explain in English why the traditional expression is no longer acceptable and misleading, and why the proposal is much much better.
  • All mentioning of the current terminology in explicit wikitext would be obsoleted, and will not match the contributions of two decades any longer, since after the change people referred to something becomes a dead end.
  • I wonder why a fundamental keyword of wiki terminology lasted until today if there is an urgent need to change.
SolidBlock (talkcontribs)

In Chinese language, the most suitable and acceptable translation for "namespace" is "命名空间". The zh-cn translation has been changed from "名字空间" to "命名空间". according to a consensus of talk in Chinese wikipedia. The new translation will not be misleading.

Legoktm (talkcontribs)

The ReplaceText extension is incompatible with configuration used on Wikimedia sites. An external tool like AWB or Pywikibot's replace.py will need to be used instead.

Incorrect translations by DDPAT

Renvoy (talkcontribs)

Hello! I wanted to deliver issue that is happening with translation of content by DDPAT 2.0 aka DDPAT Knife Series into Ukrainian and Russian. Unfortunately, user is notorious for his machine translatons that in many cases do not have any sense. For instance, diff and diff. He is esspecially bad at translating long and complex sentences. To be fair, he can have some okay-ish small translations from time to time but prior examples just do not let me not to report this situation to the community and admins. On translatewiki, discussion on temporary removal of translation right was started because of the same reason. I, myself, spoke countless times with user via Ukrainian Wiki Discord, trying to persuade him, first of all not to use Google translate and not to translate things he has no clue about but, unfortunately, seems like it does not work. What can be done in this situation? P.S. Note also that, for example, this translation done by user was deleted as low quality one.

DDPAT 2.0 (talkcontribs)

I'm sorry, but I don't translate here into Russian. And secondly, translation is allowed to all users here, so why not just correct my translations if there are no major problems with it everywhere? And I also translate what I know more than what I don't understand.

DDPAT 2.0 (talkcontribs)

As someone told me, "there is diligence, there is talent, but a little understanding of their language is not quite. So you can write it off as an advantage with a small drawback."

I hope they understand me.

Ата (talkcontribs)

I am forced to support Renvoy in that something has to be done. I would suggest banning the user from translations for a year or so. I did my share of AGF by trying to persuade him to pay more attention to his work, read carefully, not rush, study the subject before making translations and taking his time to practice English elsewhere before publishing translations of twn or here. In discussions on public Discord server he has shown what is, to my mind, utter malunderstanding of the purpose of volunteer translation, saying "who uses dictionaries in 2021?", "why don't you correct translations after me", "don't tell me you're lazy to correct me, someone else will", "if translators to Russian demand that I stop, I will" etc. I believe that giving the user free time to study English with a teacher now would be useful for their future work.

Ask on commons instead.

DA95 (talkcontribs)

hi everyone

My problem: I wanted to upload a picture (png.) from my computer into my wikipage.

Everything looks good until i get this:

We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.

I've got the permission to use this picture, it shows nothing sexualthere is nothing violent or anything at all in it. What should i do?

thanks.

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

Looking at task T146938, it looks like a filter used to prevent newbie users from uploading files to commons directly from other wikis (from the visual editor of a wiki different from commons). You should be able to upload it from commons: and then link to it from your page.

Tobias1xv (talkcontribs)

Me too :(

Naveen Kr Jindal (talkcontribs)

@Ciencia Al Poder Hi, even in commons link which you have provided above, I tried to upload my pics and I've authorised lisence to use these photos as the photos I'm trying to upload belongs to me but still I'm getting an automated error

"We could not determine whether this file is suitable for Wikimedia Commons. Please only upload photos that you took yourself with your camera, or see what else is acceptable. See the guide to make sure the file is acceptable and learn how to upload it on Wikimedia Commons.

The content must be freely licensed. Do not copy files illegally (in violation of copyright) from other websites.

If you believe that the file meets our licensing standards: Upload the file again or click "Retry failed uploads"/"Submit modified file description"

Please guide me how can I upload these pictures.

I am getting exactly the same issue with my picture - one that I took, Any solutions?

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

No solution if you're asking here. See previous comment.

I got an notice while creating a page for my project "This site is for documenting the MediaWiki software. It is not the wiki that you set up for your class, workplace, or personal use, nor is it Wikipedia." This is a project that uses chat software to search MediaWiki. Can you help me create a page for it? Thank you very much!

Clump (talkcontribs)

Hi. Please consider adding it to the new toolhub, which aggregates various tools for interacting with mediawiki.

Tacsipacsi (talkcontribs)

For the above link to work, they don’t have to. On other pages, they have to, but this topic is exactly about making this setting unnecessary.

Ciencia Al Poder (talkcontribs)

Interesting. I didn't notice the URL. I posted the message because it didn't work as advertised:

  • When this topic was posted, the talk page didn't exist. No [reply] button was present, as expected.
  • I added a new talk section.
  • Because I went with the normal edit save workflow, the resulting URL didn't have the ?dtenable=1 URL and the [reply] button wasn't appearing, until I enabled the feature in preferences :)
Whatamidoing (WMF) (talkcontribs)

Now that we've posted something there, it should be easier.

Legoktm (talkcontribs)

I am very excited to see this happen, the reply tool is fantastic and so are all the people who've worked on it.

I hope it's not too early to ask if we can disable Flow/StructuredDiscussions on all new talk pages once reply tool is available for everyone.

Whatamidoing (WMF) (talkcontribs)

I think we'd want to wait at least until the new automatic topic subscription feature is sorted. One of the problems with discussions at MediaWiki.org is staying in touch with people who don't regularly check their watchlist here.

Jdforrester (WMF) (talkcontribs)

I think that would be reasonable; let's give it a week or so for last-minute feedback before making that change?

Hello,

I'm new on mediawiki. I hope it's the right place to ask my question.

We have installed a instance of Mediawiki on our server and we want to use the Template:Q. We have create the page Template:Q (copy/paste) on our own wiki but it's don't work as expected. It's necessary to import others Template related ? Ex: Documentation?

Thanks in advance for your help

PerfektesChaos (talkcontribs)
Tacsipacsi (talkcontribs)

Also, it depends on {{label}}, which requires that your MediaWiki install accesses Wikidata directly. I haven’t tried to configure Wikidata access on a third-party wiki, but I’m pretty sure it’s quite complicated if possible at all.
