    Hey Aaron, we are also looking for PhD students. And Champaign Urbana is also great and like Madison just 2 hrs away from Chi Town.

    Extraordinary (and generous) extrapolation by in this thread! Makes me wonder about costs of bad-faith participation in democracy. Online these can be pretty low!

    What are the consequences of allowing non-citizens to vote in local elections? NYC is asking this question after deciding to open up voting to non-citizens. Research from communication & technology scholars may be able to help answer this one (thread)

    The paper has been a long time coming and you may have been seen it presented at various places or in earlier versions online or with the journal. and did a write-up a couple months ago. It's a nice summary!

    The paper is online at (paywalled...) and in preprint form at (online for everyone). We've also put full replication material (code and data) online for to ensure the work is replicable.

    We are skeptical. Our analysis of data from 136 natural experiments on shows that doing so incurs substantial costs—many hidden and some indirect. We find that requiring accounts reduces both bad and good contributions. But much more good than bad, on average.
