What To Watch: The Vote Count Could Take Weeks.

The absentee ballot process will take awhile.
The votes announced on June 22 included only early in-person and Election Day ballots. Absentee ballots, which the Associated Press estimated to be around 15 to 20 percent of the total vote, were allowed to arrive at the Board of Elections up until June 29.
Ranked-choice voting determines the winner.
The city’s ranked-choice voting system says that if no candidate receives a majority of the first-choice ballots, the last-place candidate will be eliminated and their votes reallocated, round by round, until only two candidates remain. Learn more about ranked-choice voting in New York City.
Ranked-choice results including absentee ballots were released on July 6.
The city’s Board of Elections released new ranked-choice results that included absentee ballots for the first time on July 6. It released final certified results on July 20.

Corey Johnson conceded the race for city comptroller to Brad Lander. “Today, after seeing the numbers released by the Board of Elections, it’s clear that the right thing to do is to suspend my campaign for Comptroller,” he said.

Katie Glueck July 6, 2021

Adams cast himself as a blue-collar candidate, and he had particular strength among working-class Black and Latino voters. He ran on a message keenly focused on issues of public safety and fighting inequality.

Dana Rubinstein July 6, 2021

Eric Adams’s win represents a loss for the left wing of the Democratic Party, which was partly animated by the desire to defund the police, a stance Adams roundly rejected.

Michael Gold, in New York July 6, 2021

With more absentee ballots counted, in the Republican primary for Staten Island borough president, Vito Fossella, endorsed by former President Trump, is up 290 votes. (In Friday’s tally, he was trailing Steven Matteo, a Council member, by 25 votes.)

Dana Rubinstein July 6, 2021

The Associated Press has called the primary for Eric Adams. If he is elected in November, New York City will have its second Black mayor. It has yet to elect a woman mayor.

Dana Rubinstein July 6, 2021

Eric Adams declares victory: “While there are still some very small amounts of votes to be counted, the results are clear: an historic, diverse, five-borough coalition led by working-class New Yorkers has led us to victory in the Democratic primary for Mayor of New York City.”

Jeff Mays, in New York July 6, 2021

Brad Lander, a councilman from Brooklyn, declared victory over Corey Johnson, the speaker of the City Council, in the Democratic primary for comptroller. Lander leads Johnson by 24,683 votes, according to the latest ranked-choice voting tabulation.

Jeff Mays, in New York July 6, 2021

Assemblywoman Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, the chair of the Brooklyn Democratic Party, had prematurely congratulated Eric Adams on winning when the last batch of unofficial results was released. Tonight, she hailed Adams's “unofficial lead” and praised Maya Wiley and Kathryn Garcia for a “great campaign.”

Michael Gold, in New York July 6, 2021

In City Council District 32, where Democrats want to flip the last Republican-held seat in Queens, the race remains extremely close. Felicia Singh leads Michael Scala by about 440 votes.

Emma Fitzsimmons July 6, 2021

The new tally includes 937,699 votes -- a strong turnout for a city election. That figure includes roughly 139,000 “exhausted ballots” from voters who did not list Adams or Garcia on their ballots and did not have a vote in the final round.

Emma Fitzsimmons July 6, 2021

The gap between Kathryn Garcia and Maya Wiley in the second to final round of votes in the mayor’s race grew substantially, leaving Wiley little chance of victory. Garcia is up roughly 12,300 votes over Wiley in Round 7.

Jeff Mays, in New York July 6, 2021

In the race for comptroller, Brad Lander, a councilman from Brooklyn, leads Corey Johnson, the speaker of the City Council, by 24,683 votes.

Dana Rubinstein July 6, 2021

The Board of Elections has posted more results. Kathryn Garcia remains one point, or 8,426 votes, behind Eric Adams in the mayoral primary. She’s tightened the gap, but she hasn’t overtaken Adams.

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

Eric Adams is also projecting hope. His campaign's statement: "There are still absentee ballots to be counted that we believe favor Eric -- and we are confident we will be the final choice of New Yorkers when every vote is tallied.”

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

Maya Wiley, who gets eliminated in this extremely preliminary tabulation, issued a hopeful statement: “With more than 120,000 absentee ballots left to count — in addition to provisional ballots and potential recanvassing of results — this election is still wide open.”

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

In this iteration of ranked-choice tabulations — which, again, does not include more than 124,000 outstanding absentee ballots — Brad Lander retains the lead in the comptroller’s race, outstripping Corey Johnson 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent.

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

Given how many absentee votes have yet to be counted — more than 124,000 — the order of the top three could change in the final tally, which is expected in July.

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

Maya Wiley gets eliminated in the eighth round, after trailing Kathryn Garcia by just 347 votes, in this preliminary tabulation that does not include absentee ballots.

Dana Rubinstein June 30, 2021

The Board of Elections issued an abject apology: “Yesterday’s ranked choice voting reporting error was unacceptable and we apologize to the voters and to the campaigns for the confusion. Let us be clear: RCV was not the problem, rather a human error that could have been avoided.”
