Communication before the job was excellent. They showed up on time for the estimate. The only plumber of three who included everything in their estimate. Showed up on time for the job. Communications was excellent. Discussed all issues before proceeding. Did an excellent professional job. Were extremely careful to not make a mess. Wore foot protectors. Put out protective drop cloths everywhere. Cleaned up every spot of dust. The office staff who we talked to were very friendly and helpful.

We were looking for a gas fireplace insert to replace a very old wood fireplace. We checked out the website for Penguin Fireplaces, and then visited their showroom where they have a number of fireplaces set up so you can actually see what they look like and how they work. Gladys showed us around and talked generally about what is available and what to expect in the way of cost. She provided brochures for 3 different manufacturers that we were able to take home and ponder. We didn't feel pressured or overwhelmed. I emailed Gladys a couple of days later to request an in-home consultation. Ephrain came out to discuss options and answer questions. He brought a tablet with visuals that were really helpful as we looked at our doggy-old wood fireplace and tried to imagine a gas fireplace instead. I emailed our choices to Gladys and she provided a final estimate almost immediately. We sealed the deal by email. Installation was scheduled about 2 weeks out and everything went very smoothly, on schedule and at the agreed-upon price. It's July right now--way too hot to actually use our new gas fireplace--but we've tested it out and we're very happy at this point. We still need to have cabinets and a mantel built, but that'll be another project for another day.

My gas fireplace insert had not been serviced since installed 10-15 years ago, and had not worked for over a year. Arnel cleaned the glass and rearranged the "coals" and "ash." He then correctly diagnosed the problem: the thermostat controlling the fireplace insert was causing the malfunction. Despite the fact that the thermostat said it was "millivolt" (and thus appropriate for this application), the reality was that it was not right in this instance. I replaced the thermostat and everything works perfectly.

Great! We had tried 6 other plumbers and waited 6 weeks for quotes and responses. Andrew answered right away, came out to quote the following day and started/finished the work 2 days later. His son did the actual job and was awesome. They also came in much cheaper than 2 other bids.

We'd been provided a couple educated guesstimates from licensed professionals that put this job in the $2,500 - $3,000 range but wanted to get someone on Angie's List if we could because we usually find them reliable and reasonably priced. Appointment was scheduled to occur just a few days after the initial call. Mon, August 24 - Carlos came out. Was very friendly and helpful. Seemed enthusiastic to provide the bid and promised it would be to us either end of that day or the following. After a follow up call and e-mail, the estimate was e-mailed on the 26th. The bid of $8,450 was almost 3X as much as the highest estimate we'd received. I'd heard stories of contractors that send you bids that are crazily priced because they don't want to do the job or are too busy to do the job but this is the first time I've experienced this myself. We've since gotten a bid from one of the licensed professionals we'd originally spoken with and the bid came in at exactly where he'd originally priced it. Based on previous Angie's List comments, I was rather surprised to have this happen but wanted to be sure that others were made aware of this ridiculous and time wasting practice.. I have not intention of ever having this company do any of my future projects.

They did an excellent job. Everything went very smoothly. They were very reasonable. So, that is why we went with them and they turned out to be very good. It cost us around $2,000, but I think it was about 30 or 40 feet of pipe. The workers that came out were fine. They were very professional, good, and pleasant. They were very prompt. They came out as we agreed upon and completed the work as they said they would in a timely manner. They were very responsive. It was easy to reach them. They had a secretary that or somebody that could answer if the owner was not there so they are always in good contact. They were very punctual. They got my estimate right away.

Heritage Plumbing & Heating

Last fall when I had a problem with my furnace, I spoke to Jim at length and got some really good advice. I didn't end up needing him in the end for the furnace, but I appreciated his help, which put him at the top of my list for future plumbing & HVAC needs. That time has now come. The old Moen shower valve (probably original, circa 1963) was hard to shut off (pull on, push off), and sometimes wouldn't stay off. I bought a Moen cartridge puller and tried to do it myself, but I ended up breaking off the little brass flanges that hold the core in place. Fortunately, there's another piece that holds the the whole cartridge in place, so I was able to turn the water back on. Time to call in the pros! I'm ashamed to say that I did the same thing a year ago with the cartridge in another bathroom, and that time it cost me more than 2x what Heritage charged me. When I originally called Jim, he was on vacation, but he promptly returned my call when he got back a few days later. This shower isn't used very frequently, so it wasn't urgent. I scheduled an appointment for 9 AM a few days later, which was a day I was planning to be home all day. On the day of the appointment, the plumber arrived around 8:35, saying that he was in the area already, but offered to wait until 9 if that was better for me, which it was. When I showed him my tool, he told me that the other end of the tool can also be used to pull the cartridge and offered to let me watch him work. He put down a tarp, and then showed me exactly how to use the other end of the tool to get it out. He then lightly cleaned the inside of the pipe with some sandpaper, and turned the water back on for a second or two to blow out the dregs. He then applied some high temp plumber's grease to the pipe and to the new cartridge and installed it. Before putting the face plate back on, he turned on the water to check for leaks. Then he applied grease to all the fixture screws and put the face plate and handle back on. He also offered some advice on how to clean the face plate to remove the calcium deposits (white vinegar or 0000 steel wool). The whole operation only took perhaps 15 or 20 minutes. The bill was $126 but I saved $20 with my Angie's List coupon! I paid almost $250 to another plumber to do the same thing in another bathroom a year ago.

THE NEIGHBORHOOD PLUMBER

He basically came in, did an estimate and he was actually able to come in and do the work before he thought he would be able to. He was also right on budget. He was a great guy to work with. He was very, very nice. He was very inexpensive and I would definitely use him again. I was absolutely satisfied with him. He did a great job.

Went very well. He arrived on time, was clear on the work to be done and performed it all in about an hour and a half. Small charge for parts. I will be having them come out in the near future to bid on some more extensive work to be done in my remodel project over the next 2 months.

Dave Costello arrived on time and looked at what I wanted to have done. He routed a logical path to get the gas line from the meters at street level up the back of the house and into my laundry room, kitchen and attic with minimal pipe showing inside. He mailed me an estimate two days later which was $3000 less than the other estimate I had gotten. I talked to him and asked if we could add a bit more work for future improvements we hope to make. He said he would just charge me for additional time and not the additional materials. I signed the estimate and sent a down payment of 10% of the initial estimate. He called me to give me a date and time to start. Fred arrived right on time and discussed the job with me. We made a few changes in the routing of the pipe at that time for easier access to everything with less pipe showing. He told me the job would take two days and the inspection had been set up for the third day. The first day there were two men working and the second day, three. Everyone was really nice and very professional. They tried to keep everything clean. We passed inspection the following day. I had to call Fred back because our neighbors had an issue with their water heater and stove pilots. He was very nice and came back to make sure that all the pilots were lit and everyone was happy. They also snaked out a plugged outside drain for me during the time they were here free of charge. After the job was done, Dave Costello called me back to let me know that the additional time and materials for the extra work came to $700. Since they had reused some of the pipe for the fireplace that they couldn't get out, he said that he would only charge me $400 for the additional time.

SOD Home Group
3.0
SODs work and craftsmanship on the wood work they did was excellent. Their communication process both with me and with their own team was painful to deal with. We had a gas line installed and often workers would show up either before we were notified they were coming or after they were supposed to. Then we had to go for the inspection on the gas line which took 4 visits before we got sign-off. Some of that may have been due to strict inspectors. But some of it was certainly due to SOD not being properly prepared to answer the questions of the inspector satisfactorily. I lost count of how may days I had to stay home from work for someone to come out and do something small, then wait for an inspector, then be disappointed when the work wasn't good enough. For the final inspection, they told me they were coming out for a little bit of work to prepare for the inspection, so I decided to go into work late. They then proceeded to replace the whole gas line they had installed with a different material over the next three hours before the inspector finally came and passed it. Needless to say I was more then a little late to work that day. I don't want to take away from the work they did repairing our bookcases after removing a cabinet. That work was beautiful and cleaner then I thought could have been done, but the rest was a tiring ordeal.

ATLAS PLUMBING & ROOTER
3.0
After shopping around, Atlas? quote of ~ $750 plus potential additional cost for unforeseen problems seemed in the middle of the pack. They also requested that I have the work area prepped with the kitchen cabinet removed to gain access to the gas line and the wall opened to run the new line.We agreed on the price and I prepared the area for the work. On the day of the job, the technician and assistant arrived on time. They brought in their equipment and set to work. After about 30 minutes, it seemed to me that the layout of the new line they were planning was?odd. When I asked if this was to code, the technician seemed surprised and stated that if I wanted the job ?to code? it would require approximately $250 in additional cost. While my first instinct was to show them the door, I was under a time crunch and they were on site. After completing the project, the technician wrote instructions for the inspection on the invoice and departed. When I called for the inspection, I was informed that a permit had not been pulled. As noted above, I cannot pull the permit. ONLY a licensed plumber can pull a permit for this type of work in my type of building, something I believe Atlas should have known. When I called Atlas, the owner informed me that I had not requested a permit, and that it was going to be an additional ~$250 for Atlas to obtain the required documents. But the owner did offer that he would not charge me for the time the technician was on site for the inspection. The technical arrived at the correct time the day of the inspection and I got the work signed off. So what started as a $750 quote ended up being ~$1250 when it was all said and done, and had I not been actively monitoring Atlas? work, the job would have likely have been installed out of code and not permitted. Had Atlas been up front with their costs and intentions, I believe it would have been an 'A' rating.

He is careful, thorough, on time, and on budget. He is just the kind of person you would want to have working in your home. We have used them for years on a variety of plumbing jobs including installing a toilet. He is the best and the price is worth it to me for the excellent quality of the work.

SAN JOSE PLUMBING

I chose this company to give me an estimate on doing some gas work, running a gas line for a dryer, range and fireplace. We have tenants in the house, and were assured that the person doing the estimate would have no problem. The person showed up to give the estimate, and was rude and condescending to the tenant. Then, the estimator started asking the tennant what he was there to estimate. The tennant tried to call my wife (who was unavailable, and who we had told the company was going to be unavailable.) The worker told the tennant he was just going to leave. The tennant then called me and I spoke to the estimator, who was rude and condescending to me as well. I went over what we wanted done, and when I didn't know something (like how big the range was going to be) I asked him just to note it and include estimates for both types. When we got off the phone, the tennant told me that he didn't measure anything, just wrote a number ($3700) on the back of a card and threw it on the table saying and quot;Make sure they get thatand quot;. My wife called him back once she was available, and he was rude to her to. She tried to apologize for being unavailable, and he said and quot;I was already there.and quot; and then hung up on her. I called the main office and asked to speak to a supervisor who was (surprise surprise) not available. I left a detailed message, along with a phone number and asked to have a manager call me. They never called me back. I cannot imagine a more unprofessional encounter. If this is how they act even before they get my money, I can't fathom what it would be like once they did have it. I called two other places who came within 48 hours and were completely professional and followed up, and both estimates were nearly $1000 less.

Flawlessly. showed up on time, did the work in the time they stated, and the bill was quoted with no surprises. Tony Contreras who serviced the tankless also showed me how to get extra discounts through their Diamond Club and other sources. The techs were all very professional, courteous and left our house clean and tidy. I will use them from now on!

ARIEL PLUMBING

I've never actually had this happen before but I waited around for Ariel's Plumbing three separate times and he never showed. After an hour past the window he was supposed to be here, I called Ariel up, and he apologized saying that he just got tied up at another appointment. We rescheduled for the next day. Same thing, no show, no call! I left several messages but got no return call. Finally when I got him on the phone, he apologized again. I said that I would give him one more chance if he discounted the job by $50 to which he agreed. Now today I waited around for two hours, he didn't show up and I only get his voice mail. What a lousy service, I'd recommend staying away from these guys.

American Kitchen And Bath Inc

On the first day a worker brought a trailer to haul all debris away. Daily they arrived at the scheduled time and usually worked a full day. Every employee introduced himself, used polite and respectful language at all times. There were a couple of minor miscalculations which American Kitchen & Bath handled very professionally and to my satisfaction. The design and kitchen lay-out was everything we hoped for - Ron Moist excellent job! The workers have the best attitudes and were pleasant to be around. We shared a mutual respect - I for their professionalism and they for our home. To Mr. Johans Wartenbergh, you have a great company, Yvette and I rave about our new kitchen - thank you.

Gas Fireplace Repair Near You

Ask yourself these questions to help find reliable service for quality gas fireplace repair near you.

What are common problems with gas fireplaces?

Two overriding problems are common to gas fireplaces, almost always leading to gas fireplace repair work for a local service:

  • Gas fireplace will not light — this could be a clogged pilot light, broken thermopile, closed gas valve, or (in older models) a faulty thermocouple
  • Flue venting — Even with clean-burning propane or natural gas, deposits can build up in the flue, blocking combustion gases from escaping; this is extremely dangerous

What parts typically need gas fireplace repair?

Electronic or electric ignitions often require professional service to adjust or replace them. Other parts that require replacement or repair:

  • Thermopiles, sensors that converts electrical impulses into thermal energy to ignite the gas, can fail and are easily replaced by a professional
  • Gas burners can become clogged with dust and debris, leading to an impure burn (fluttering flames) and weak flames
  • Gas valves can either not open to allow gas to flow for ignition, or they may leak when closed; sniff for the tell-tale stink of the additive gas, methyl mercaptan, used to signal a gas leak

How much should gas fireplace repair near me cost?

Angie's List research found you should expect a $100 average charge for a service call, with costs of around $150 for pilot light repair.
