On this page, the deletion or merging of templates and modules, except as noted below, is discussed. To propose the renaming of a template or templates, use Wikipedia:Requested moves.

How to use this page[edit]

What not to propose for discussion here[edit]

The majority of deletion and merger proposals concerning pages in the template namespace and module namespace should be listed on this page. However, there are a few exceptions:

Stub templates
Stub templates and categories should be listed at Categories for discussion, as these templates are merely containers for their categories, unless the stub template does not come with a category and is being nominated by itself.
Userboxes
Userboxes should be listed at Miscellany for deletion, regardless of the namespace in which they reside.
Speedy deletion candidates
If the template clearly satisfies a criterion for speedy deletion, tag it with a speedy deletion template. For example, if you wrote the template and request its deletion, tag it with {{Db-author}}.
Policy or guideline templates
Templates that are associated with particular Wikipedia policies or guidelines, such as the speedy deletion templates, cannot be listed at TfD separately. They should be discussed on the talk page of the relevant guideline.
Template redirects
List at Redirects for discussion.

Reasons to delete a template[edit]

  1. The template violates some part of the template namespace guidelines, and can't be altered to be in compliance.
  2. The template is redundant to a better-designed template.
  3. The template is not used, either directly or by template substitution (the latter cannot be concluded from the absence of backlinks), and has no likelihood of being used.
  4. The template violates a policy such as Neutral point of view or Civility and it can't be fixed through normal editing.

Templates should not be nominated if the issue can be fixed by normal editing. Instead, you should edit the template to fix its problems. If the template is complex and you don't know how to fix it, WikiProject Templates may be able to help.

Templates for which none of these apply may be deleted by consensus here. If a template is being misused, consider clarifying its documentation to indicate the correct use, or informing those that misuse it, rather than nominating it for deletion. Initiate a discussion on the template talk page if the correct use itself is under debate.

Listing a template[edit]

To list a template for deletion or merging, follow this three-step process. Note that the "Template:" prefix should not be included anywhere when carrying out these steps (unless otherwise specified).

Step Instructions
I: Tag the template. Add one of the following codes to the top of the template page:

Note:

  • If the template nominated is inline, do not add a newline between the Tfd notice and the code of the template.
  • If the template to be nominated for deletion is protected, make a request for the Tfd tag to be added, by posting on the template's talk page and using the {{editprotected}} template to catch the attention of administrators or Template editors.
  • For templates designed to be substituted, add <noinclude>...</noinclude> around the Tfd notice to prevent it from being substituted alongside the template.
  • Do not mark the edit as minor.
  • Use an edit summary like
Nominated for deletion; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]]
    or
Nominated for merging; see [[Wikipedia:Templates for discussion#Template:name of template]].
  • Before saving your edit, preview your edit to ensure the Tfd message is displayed properly.

Multiple templates: If you are nominating multiple related templates, choose a meaningful title for the discussion (like "American films by decade templates"). Tag every template with {{subst:Tfd|heading=discussion title}} or {{subst:Tfm|name of other template|heading=discussion title}} instead of the versions given above, replacing discussion title with the title you chose (but still not changing the PAGENAME code).

Related categories: If including template-populated tracking categories in the Tfd nomination, add {{Catfd|template name}} to the top of any categories that would be deleted as a result of the Tfd, this time replacing template name with the name of the template being nominated. (If you instead chose a meaningful title for a multiple nomination, use {{Catfd|header=title of nomination}} instead.)

TemplateStyles pages: The above templates will not work on TemplateStyles pages. Instead, add a CSS comment to the top of the page:

/* This template is being discussed in accordance with Wikipedia's deletion policy. Help reach a consensus at its entry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Log/2021_November_3#Template:template_name.css */
II: List the template at Tfd. Follow this link to edit today's Tfd log.

Add this text at the top, just below the -->:

  • For deletion: {{subst:Tfd2|template name|text=Why you think the template should be deleted. ~~~~}}
  • For merging: {{subst:Tfm2|template name|other template's name|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

If the template has had previous Tfds, you can add {{Oldtfdlist|previous Tfd without brackets|result of previous Tfd}} directly after the Tfd2/Catfd2 template.

Use an edit summary such as
Adding [[Template:template name]].

Multiple templates: If this is a deletion proposal involving multiple templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfd2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be deleted. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ). Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

If this is a merger proposal involving more than two templates, use the following:

{{subst:Tfm2|template name 1|template name 2 ...|with=main template (optional)|title=meaningful discussion title|text=Why you think the templates should be merged. ~~~~}}

You can add up to 50 template names (separated by vertical bar characters | ), plus one more in |with=. |with= does not need to be used, but should be the template that you want the other templates to be merged into. Make sure to include the same meaningful discussion title that you chose before in Step 1.

Related categories: If this is a deletion proposal involving a template and a category populated solely by templates, add this code after the Tfd2 template but before the text of your rationale:

{{subst:Catfd2|category name}}
III: Notify users. Please notify the creator of the template nominated (as well as the creator of the target template, if proposing a merger). It is helpful to also notify the main contributors of the template that you are nominating. To find them, look in the page history or talk page of the template. Then, add one of the following:

to the talk pages of the template creator (and the creator of the other template for a merger) and the talk pages of the main contributors. It is also helpful to make any interested WikiProjects aware of the discussion. To do that, make sure the template's talk page is tagged with the banners of any relevant WikiProjects; please consider notifying any of them that do not use Article alerts.

Multiple templates: There is no template for notifying an editor about a multiple-template nomination: please write a personal message in these cases.

Consider adding any templates you nominate for Tfd to your watchlist. This will help ensure that the Tfd tag is not removed.

After nominating: Notify interested projects and editors[edit]

While it is sufficient to list a template for discussion at TfD (see above), nominators and others sometimes want to attract more attention from and participation by informed editors. All such efforts must comply with Wikipedia's guideline against biased canvassing.

To encourage participation by less experienced editors, please avoid Wikipedia-specific abbreviations in the messages you leave about the discussion, link to any relevant policies or guidelines, and link to the TfD discussion page itself. If you are recommending that a template be speedily deleted, please give the criterion that it meets.

Notifying related WikiProjects[edit]

WikiProjects are groups of editors that are interested in a particular subject or type of editing. If the article is within the scope of one or more WikiProjects, they may welcome a brief, neutral note on their project's talk page(s) about the TfD. You can use {{Tfdnotice}} for this.

Tagging the nominated template's talk page with a relevant Wikiproject's banner will result in the template being listed in that project's Article Alerts automatically, if they subscribe to the system. For instance, tagging a template with {{WikiProject Physics}} will list the discussion in Wikipedia:WikiProject Physics/Article alerts.

Notifying substantial contributors to the template[edit]

While not required, it is generally considered courteous to notify the good-faith creator and any main contributors of the template and its talkpage that you are nominating for discussion. To find the creator and main contributors, look in the page history or talk page.

At this point, you've done all you need to do as nominator. Sometime after seven days have passed, someone else will either close the discussion or, where needed, "relist" it for another seven days of discussion. (That "someone" may not be you, the nominator.)

Once you have submitted a template here, no further action is necessary on your part. If the nomination is successful it will be added to the Holding Cell until the change is implemented. There is no requirement for nominators to be part of the implementation process, but they are allowed to if they so wish.

Also, consider adding any templates you nominate to your watchlist. This will help ensure that your nomination tag is not mistakenly or deliberately removed.

Twinkle[edit]

Twinkle is a convenient tool that can perform many of the functions of notification automatically. Twinkle does not notify WikiProjects, although many of them have automatic alerts. It is helpful to notify any interested WikiProjects that don't receive alerts, but this has to be done manually.

Discussion[edit]

Anyone can join the discussion, but please understand the deletion policy and explain your reasoning.

People will sometimes also recommend subst or subst and delete and similar. This means the template text should be "merged" into the articles that use it. Depending on the content, the template page may then be deleted; if preserving the edit history for attribution is desirable, it may be history-merged with the target article or moved to mainspace and redirected.

Templates are rarely orphaned—that is, removed from pages that transclude them—before the discussion is closed. A list of open discussions eligible for closure can be found at Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Old unclosed discussions.

Closing discussion[edit]

Administrators should read the closing instructions before closing a nomination. Note that WP:XFDCloser semi-automates this process and ensures all of the appropriate steps are taken.

November 2[edit]

Template:Str find0[edit]

There are three template wrappers for {{#invoke:string|find}}, which searches for a string inside another string and returns the position as a one-based index: {{strfind short}} (a completely straightforward wrapper), {{in string}} (which adds a |nomatch= option), and {{str find0}}, which subtracts one from the result before returning it. This is more wrappers than are necessary; it is simpler to just have one or two. (There is also a different template called {{str find}}.) I think this makes it sufficiently redundant for deletion.

This template is suposed to simplify calculations for expressions like {{str right|ABCDE|{{str find0|ABCDE|C}}}} = CDE, which displays the string ABCDE starting at C, and would otherwise need to be {{str sub|ABCDE|{{#expr:{{strfind short|ABCDE|C}}-1}}}}. However, that isn't particularly common and it is arguably clearer and more versatile to just use a template like {{replace}} or {{#invoke:string|match}} to remove or select bits of string X based on the position of substring Y. There is also a one-based substring template, so {{str sub new|ABCDE|{{strfind short|ABCDE|C}}}} does the same thing as the first example without needing an {{#expr}}. There are currently only 15 transclusions of this template, mostly in userspace. I would suggest that these be substed down to the form with {{#expr:{{strfind short|...}}-1}} if the template is deleted. User:GKFXtalk 21:26, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Oldafdfull/new[edit]

Unused. The last one is nothing but blank space. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:09, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Delete: Judging by the page history, it seems that Jarry1250, bless his heart, tried to make this template but couldn't figure out how to do it and gave up lol. 2nd one is also just blank. Curbon7 (talk) 05:21, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Oldwelcome[edit]

Welcome 2 is unused and both are not needed as welcome messages are longer required using a separate template. But these two are not the typical welcome messages new users receive. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:09, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[]

These two were featured on the Unused Templates report so yes being unused is relevant. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:35, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:OGL-2.0[edit]

Unused file notice. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:09, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Potentially keep? It would be a pain for someone to have to recreate or undelete this template when needed, and the other OGL templates are used so there is some hope of that. User:GKFXtalk 21:31, 2 November 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Delete as unused, although it's worth pointing out that the second part of the nomination is nonsense; this template has nothing to do with user's [sic] being featured on the main page, but would instead be used to recognize a user's contributions to an article that appeared in the On this Day section. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:47, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]
* Pppery *, saying, "although it's worth pointing out that the second part of the nomination is nonsense", counts somewhat as a personal attack. You could use the later part of your delete vote to explain why what I said isn't correct. But what I said is I doubt that a user will be featured for their efforts on the main page. Nothing I said was nonsensical or what you perceived to be. Refrain from such language in the future. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:34, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Keep These are templates intended to be substituted, so their lack of use is irrelevant, and you are providing no evidence that they are no longer being substituted anywhere. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:47, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]
And yet these aren't used anywhere at the present time. So their lack of use is relevant. And I said most likely, I'm putting out a guess. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 01:37, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]
@WikiCleanerMan: I'm not sure you understand Pppery's point. Templates whose intended purpose is to be subst'ed will never show up as having transclusions. That's just the way it works - you can't look at transclusions for a template that is intended to be used with subst to find out if it is used. For example, {{Article for deletion}} is obviously in use, but has no transclusions (other than a documentation page) because its intended use is to be subst'ed. It is used hundreds of times a week. --B (talk) 12:06, 3 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Slovakia statistics templates[edit]

This set of templates are used in a nested fashion to put statistics in articles about Slovakia, such as Abranovce. This presumably makes it easier for the author of Statistic of Slovak places by Dušan Kreheľ to update the stats from their website, which is used as the data source. It's great to have these statistics in Wikipedia, but unfortunately this nest of templates makes it difficult for other editors to improve the formatting, make corrections, or do their own updates. (For example, after poking around these templates for a few minutes, despite having edited Wikipedia for decades and writing bots myself, I couldn't figure out where the numbers are actually coming from.) I think the best thing to do would be to flatten out all this complexity by subst:ing all these templates (which as I discovered would have to be done recursively). For future mass updates, I think it would be better to have a bot dump formulaic prose in articles or infoboxes directly, which is what has been done for U.S. census results. -- Beland (talk) 00:30, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:BugineseE[edit]

Not a template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:40, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]

This really IS a template (very basic). and it has been used as well to encode the vowel in isolation.
With an embedded doc (in its noinclude section), explaining why it exists. However it was created long time ago to solve compatibility problems where most fonts made for the Buginese script incorrectly rendered the "pre-ordered" vowel after the consonnant, instead of before it. Still most fonts (or text engines) do not correctly apply the pre-ordering, so the alternative is to encode it separately (with a non-breaking space) before the consonnant to which it applies. And the template makes in the text where this compatiblity encoding it used. Still today, the normal encoding of the Buginese vowel E (which is a combining character) is after the base consonnant, even if it should be rednered before it. It is not intended to be substituted as is (and it should not!), so that we can track with compatiblity encoding (suggested by Unicode itself) is used. If you want to substitute it, the template including must be moved AFTER the base consonnant, and the NBSP dropped). You would see that the rendering it still (most often) incorrect with the vowel incorrectly placed to the right (instead of the left) of the consonnant. This is a known problem that affects many platforms (except a few new ones that have updated their text engines), because OpenType rules implemented for the Buginese script in text engines are still defective (or just forgotten). That combinign vowel should behave like other prepended vowels used in a few other South-East Asian scripts like Lao (which are rendered correctly just because these scripts are much widely used, and implemetned/tested in text engines; unfortunately the Buginese script is for a small minority and text engines implemetners have been very late to update their composition rules, even when using conforming Unicode fonts for this script). The tempalte was created here to fill a gap and allow writing Buginese correctly (Note that there's still also a lack of support of a dfecent input method in most devices for this script (including in Android, and iOS, years after the script was encoded, even if those mobile devices are much newer and should have included the single OpenType rule needed for the script, like they did for Lao or other Asian scripts...).
See also Lontara script for a description of the old problem. It may no longer affect recent versions of Chrome/Chromium, but it still affects a lot of other webbrowsers, and mobile devices.
So before subtituting the template make proper tests (or if this has been blmindly subsituted, the result was wrong and needs to be reverted). The template was there to track more easily pages affected by this rendering bug (there should not be a lot of them on this wiki). I've seen various pages with incorrect encoding (notably using external sources using NON-Unicode fonts, or encoding the vowel directly before its base consonnant (without marking the vowel by a NBSP prefix to make it non-combining), so the texts were broken, and unparsable (and it was effectively the case years ago, when the template was created, as a workaround for this issue, even if now the correct support of the script is correct in current versions of Chrome/Chromium and Chromium-based version Edge, but have bever been correct in IE, and in Windows XP/7 or on Windows 10 if still using the old version of Edge and also incorrect in many old versions of Android that are still in use today). verdy_p (talk) 13:12, 1 November 2021 (UTC)[]

Tennis at multi-sport competitions[edit]

Redundant to Template:Infobox tennis tournament event (all transclusions replaced). Sod25 (talk) 13:19, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Keep user substituted all templates without a discussion. These are used for MSE events per WP:MSE, and should not be replaced with single sport templates/infoboxes. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 13:30, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Sportsfan 1234: Template:Infobox tennis tournament event and Template:Infobox tennis tournament year are the standard infoboxes on every single tennis draw and every single tennis tournament edition article, except for multi-sport events until now. All these templates are now entirely redundant to the standard tennis templates. Not just redundant, but inferior - the standard tennis template can list winners/runners-up, scores, and have succession links, whereas these don't: compare this (old) to this (new). Sod25 (talk) 13:46, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
The infoboxes above can include the score. There is zero reason to be listing a runner up in these. Keep in mind this is a tennis tournament at a larger MSE event, not a tennis tournament by itself. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 13:54, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
They are tennis tournaments, and fall under the umbrella of WP:Tennis (as well as WP:MSE and others). The tennis infoboxes should be on the tennis tournament/event pages and are superior in functionality to all of these - you didn't address the succession links, which have logic specialized to tennis and specific tracking categories for the maintenance of all tennis tournament/event articles across Wikipedia. Also check the source of the "old" version linked above - there are params for score/champ but the template doesn't display them. Mass-reverting to inferior templates is simply disruptive. Sod25 (talk) 14:08, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Keep per above, similar to other multi-sports events pages in all other sports, see no reason to make Tennis an exemption. Mohsen1248 (talk) 13:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Mohsen1248, please see above. Also tennis is already being treated as an exception on the latest Olympic pages, which are the most-viewed (edit: tennis) MSEs. Sod25 (talk) 13:55, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Then someone has to create the templates for the Olympic Tennis events as well. because as I said I see no reason to make Tennis an exemption and who says Tennis pages "are the most-viewed MSEs" ? even if that's true (which I believe you just made that up) it doesn't change anything. my question stands, why Tennis should be an exception? Mohsen1248 (talk) 15:06, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I meant the "most-viewed tennis MSEs". Tennis should be an exception because these two templates are standard across all 8,000+ tennis tournament pages and 16,000+ singles/doubles pages, and they provide greater functionality than the listed templates, the most significant being succession links with logic specific to tennis pages and tracking categories for the maintenance of tennis articles across Wikipedia. Also, there are potentially hundreds more of these templates that haven't yet been created but could, e.g. 19 more "TennisatXXXXSEAsianGames". Having 2 templates with the functionality of all of these saves editor time (no need to create a new template for every tournament), and makes maintenance easier (modifications/improvements only need to be made to 1-2 templates instead of 27+). Sod25 (talk) 15:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete all Navboxes are already provided to navigate between the respective tournaments or are linked on the main tennis articles for the events. All fall under creep and crust. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 14:20, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Navboxes (or do you mean Infoboxes?) do not link to the other events as part of the sport's competition at the said event. Also the qualification link is missing. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 14:47, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Comment I'd also like to point out that discussing 20+ templates used on articles ranging and notability and quality is also a bad idea. Perhaps discussing each event on its own (and said templates) would be a better idea. Sportsfan 1234 (talk) 14:49, 31 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Barbadian presidential elections[edit]

Propose merging Template:Barbadian presidential elections with Template:Barbadian elections.
A presidential election is a type of election, and so should be a new line in Template:Barbadian elections. Also Template:Barbadian presidential elections has only two links, so should not exist as a separate template, as the purpose of templates is to navigate between articles- so makes sense to merge it into the broader template Joseph2302 (talk) 09:07, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Oppose merge There is a long-established consensus that non-public elections are not listed on the main national elections navigation templates, hence why separate templates for indirect presidential elections like this exist. However, as there's only been one presidential election to date in Barbados, I would support deleting the presidential elections template for now until there are other articles in the series that it can provide a navigational function for. Number 57 09:09, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Then wouldn't a better solution be to merge for now until enough presidential elections pages are created and then split? A shame to lose a valid navigation link. Gonnym (talk) 09:58, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I don't think so, as it will almost certainly be used as justification to start adding them into other templates. However, I would support it being added into {{Politics of Barbados}} (which also appears on most Barbadian election articles) instead. Cheers, Number 57 10:03, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Adding link to {{Politics of Barbados}} and deleting template is also fine by me. If that's the usual way of handling these types of elections. Joseph2302 (talk) 15:32, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Merge This is single-use and while the Presidency of Barbados is a new position. Maybe over time more elections will happen thus giving the need for a separate template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:12, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
You said there are examples of this. Any particular indirect elections which we don't include on main elections navboxes? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 15:34, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@WikiCleanerMan: Yes, see for example {{Albanian presidential elections}}/{{Albanian elections}}, {{Indian presidential elections}}/{{Indian elections}}, {{Italian presidential elections}}/{{Italian elections}}, {{Latvian presidential elections}}/{{Latvian elections}}, {{Pakistani presidential elections}}/{{Pakistani elections}} etc. The nominator is also happy with the suggestion to list on the 'Politics of' template, so I hope that is a reasonable solution. Cheers, Number 57 15:52, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Got it. I'm still of the opinion the template should not stay as is until more presidential elections happen. But if merging to the politics sidebar is feasible then that is okay. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 16:08, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Oppose per Number 57 - consistency here outweighs having a small navbox. Elli (talk | contribs) 20:06, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • If it's not merged, then it should be deleted, because it serves no usefulness as a template on its own. Templates are meant to navigate between articles, and this one doesn't do that. Joseph2302 (talk) 16:14, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
    • @Elli: Regarding Joseph2302's comment and what this discussion should result in, I think there is an emerging consensus that a merge to {{Politics of Barbados}} would be a suitable outcome. Cheers, Number 57 19:38, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Bold taxon list[edit]

Unused. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 16:19, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Comment The template completes a set, described at Template:Species list/doc. In theory, the template could be used; for example, we don't usually have articles on extinct species, as opposed to extinct genera. In this case, the species names in a list of species belonging to the genus would be set up as redirects to the genus and so would typically be in bold. However, as it's not used, there seems no reason not to delete it, provided the documentation is updated. (It is just invokes {{#invoke:TaxonList|main|bold=yes|...}}, so is easy to recreate if it were ever needed.) Peter coxhead (talk) 20:58, 30 October 2021 (UTC)[]

This unused template is redundant to Template:EmmyAward VarietySpecialWriting but was created first. Of these two templates, EmmyAward VarietySpecialWriting is more up to date (has 2021 winner) and is used. There's a few possibilities that could be done here:

Comment That's all I could find too. I believe this nomination is erroneously made based upon there being a "policy" about a minimum number of links of 5--those taking a deletion position have supplied that as the only reason (see WP:PERNOMINATOR as an argument to avoid). The essay Wikipedia:Not everything needs a navbox is a good essay but so is Wikipedia:A navbox on every page. I believe this question comes down to an editing issue rather than a policy. For the reasons I gave above (standardization, navigation, history, completion) I will maintain my position of Keep.--Paul McDonald (talk) 19:21, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Keep. The challenge here is that programs change conference status rather frequently. When it was created in 2020 there were four such programs: [2]. All four have since joined conferences. It doesn't require a crystal ball to predict that more programs at that level will become independent and justify the (re-)creation of the template. Template:R1[edit]

Propose merging Template:R1 with Template:R-phrase.
I propose merge / deletion of all templates in Category:R-phrase templates to Template:R-phrase. It's much easier to maintain these having a single template. It also makes it easier to change if there are updates to the categorisation or formatting in the future, and decreases our sitewide maintenance burden. Most R templates are unused and as you can see there are posts on Template talk:Rlink dating back to 2009 where deletion / merger are considered. Tom (LT) (talk) 07:33, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • don't merge I think this merge may be just wasting time. R-phrases are superseded, so if you see them (and S phrases) in articles please convert them to H and P phrases. Perhaps we can do this for R1, instead of mucking about with merge busy work for templates that will soon all be anachronisms. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 07:46, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I have edited the few pages in article space that transclude it, so that R1 is no longer called. Though perhaps it will be best to just leave it alone to avoid messing up article history. I suspectm the nominator has not looked at how the templates work. It will be ridiculous to merge just R1 without merging all the rest (R2, R3, ...). Graeme Bartlett (talk) 08:02, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
@Graeme Bartlett could you please explain how an edit that changes a usage of {{R-phrase}} should be? Gonnym (talk) 12:36, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Example here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Silver_perchlorate&type=revision&diff=1052381486&oldid=979567869 where I removed R and S phrases and replaced with H and P. Perhaps non article pages can be substed, but there are a wide variety of uses, even in arbcom cases. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:16, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • don't merge per Graeme Bartlett: the set has been abandoned by EU. Remaining quesion: should they be replaced in the articles, or be kept for historical reasons (in an article, keep some reference to "it was R3"; though this is not infobox-worthy)? Replacement-process? -DePiep (talk) 18:21, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
I am not keen to add this information back into text even as historical information. This is because these R values really apply to a product in a package. It is not an immutable property of a substance. The R value will depend on how it is packaged, the quantity, and any contamination, and perhaps local law. Articles with R values are typically created early in the history of Wikipedia. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 21:16, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
OK. -DePiep (talk) 06:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @@Graeme Bartlett, DePiep, and Gonnym: in this case, wouldn't it be better just to replace/delete this set of mostly unused Rn templates? Particularly the unused ones - they are just stating what is part of a historical almanac. I don't see any reason to keep them at all based on what you've said. Tom (LT) (talk) 02:19, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]
The reason to keep them, is that if you delete them, all the historic revisions of pages will then show up red links instead of valid values. (I am now up to replacing R8 in articles, having finished R1 to R7). Already if you use these R phrases you will get (outdated) displayed in your chembox, and I think that is enough. And they certainly should not be deleted before all articles have a chance to be upgraded. Graeme Bartlett (talk) 02:38, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Some practical info (you probably already know): in {{Chembox}} (in {{Chembox Hazards}} actually) |RPhrases=, |SPhrases= parameter input is suppressed (not shown) when GHS input is present. R- and S-phrases are shown with the (outdated) label when no GHS input is available. Pages are categorised under Category:Chembox DSD GHS changeover (2). Also there are the Template parameters usage listings. HTH -DePiep (talk) 06:02, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Replace the R phrases and delete all R templates once used. While sadly the replacement isn't a 1-1 easy replacement, placing the templates at the Wikipedia:Templates for discussion/Holding cell will make sure that this process isn't lost and forgotten and maybe add more editors willing to participate it in. Regarding the issue of old revisions - TfD deletes templates all the time. Since TfD deletes templates and is a fundamental part of its process, that issue is a non-issue so opposing leaving any unused templates for any reasons. Gonnym (talk) 05:30, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:WikiProject Football/hide[edit]

This seems to be just text and nothing else. It's not a standard feature of WikiProjects. I also am not sure the rationale stated as the template was created in 2008 and our features have changed significantly since then. Basically I am proposing deletion because it's harmful to have inaccurate content around, and makes maintenance harder and more time consuming. So I propose deletion. This is a test edit as there is a set of 14 or so similar templates (as compared with the hundreds of WP templates around). Tom (LT) (talk) 05:46, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Delete per nomination. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 14:19, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Relist with the 12 or so other similar templates (there are a couple of false positives in that search result), which do not appear to do anything, but we could be wrong. None of them have any transclusions. It is difficult to believe that they have a function at this time; they clearly used to do something, but their functionality appears to have been replaced with updated code somewhere. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:05, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Soviet Estonia Elections[edit]

  • Administrator note, the content in {{Soviet Estonia Elections}} and {{ESSR elections}} was removed today from {{Estonian elections}}. I think the better question is whether these two templates should be merged, though I note that a 2018 TFD indicated they should both be kept. I would encourage Elli to add the ESSR template to this nomination in order to give it a fair discussion (i.e. you should not nominate one of two nearly-identical templates for deletion and leave the second). Primefac (talk) 08:42, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete and delete {{ESSR elections}}, which is a POV fork. Number 57 09:38, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
    • No POV fork here, maybe a case of the eye of the beholder's own strong POV? Clear consensus was achieved in 2018 TFD for keeping {{ESSR elections}}, as you well know. {{Irish (UK) elections}} isn't a POV fork of {{Irish elections}}, nor is {{East German elections}} a POV fork of {{German elections}}. Different state entities and/or geographic scope warrent different templates. --Nug (talk) 16:56, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
      • It is a clear POV fork, and all the 'keep' votes at the last TfD came from the usual group of Estonian nationalist editors. As for who has the POV, I am not the one who has been topic banned from this area. And the Irish/German election templates are not equivalents – please stop pushing this disingenuous equivalence. Number 57 19:34, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
        • Facepalm. Is the best argument you can come up with is to reference something that happened a decade ago and slurring others who don't agree with your POV as "the usual group of <insert country> nationalist editors"? How about you start with articulating why the Irish/German election templates are not equivalents? --Nug (talk) 23:23, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete Deletion is not the end of the world. But the main Estonia election template should state or categorize the listing of the elections during the Soviet Estonia period. As modern Estonia didn't exist until around 1991/92. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:12, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
    • The current template {{Estonian elections}} references elections of the ESSR in the footer, in a similar way as the templates for Germany and Ireland do for their respective polities. I'm curious as to where you sourced the notion that modern Estonia didn't exist until around 1991/1992? According to the Estonian parliament, there is direct continuity to the pre-war republic, starting with the 1st-riigikogu of 1920, up until the current sitting 13th riigikogu. --Nug (talk) 23:16, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Pre-war republic and post-Soviet Estonia are two different periods. Modern Estonia doesn't date back to before Soviet rule. History isn't determined by the parliament of the country. And if one template does the job, then there is no need for multiple templates. The main elections template does that. And no the footer doesn't do anything other than link to this template. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:42, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]
Yeah, but there are a ton of reliable sources that contradict the claim, see the cites in State continuity of the Baltic states. We could take it to WP:RSN to see if a state's parliament is a reliable source for it's own history. --Nug (talk) 23:58, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Pictures PLC

[edit]

The first template is a gallery and should be part of the article. The second is an article section. Both are not a good use of a template space and should be substituted where used. The last three have the same issue. These belong as part of the article(s), not templates. Substitution for the last three as well. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:27, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Ferrari sales

All single-use and should be substituted on the car companies' respective article sections. This was purely created for the articles and qualifies as article content. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:27, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Airbus A220 orders and deliveries

[edit]

All should be substituted where used or where appropriate. All these templates qualify as article content and should be on the articles as such. Not on template space. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:27, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

I created a couple of these and update others. It would seem that many, if not all, have multiple transclusions; are these now to be transcluded from the main page? I also have concerns about the quality of future editing. At the moment we have a certain type of template editor that differs from the general article editor; this type likes to update the data, has the necessary discipline to do so and knows their way around the sources. Some of these templates were made to take the data management out of the general article editing circuit for just this reason. That strategy has been quite successful because editors who do not know what they are doing tend to balk at changing the template; some still get through but most editors who try to change the data because they have just read a newspaper article don’t go on to damage the integrity of the templates. By deleting these templates and including in the main body of the article my prediction is that their data sets are going to get a lot more complicated to keep in check. It is also easier to bring the format of these similar type of templates into alignment to make comparisons easier. Consequently, my personal preference is to keep them separate from the articles. Template:Airports in Sergipe

[edit]

A recreated template that was deleted back on March 29, 2018 for only having one link. Three years later, the template still hasn't been different. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 21:26, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Dear WikiCleanerMan, Thanks for your message. I was the editor who recreated the template. The template Airports in Sergipe was recreated to be in harmony with all other 26 States plus one Federal District of the Brazilian Federation. Sergipe is the smallest State of the Federation and this is the reason why there is a small number of facilities. Also in harmony with other templates, I have only listed public facilities as per the Brazilian National Civil Aviation Agency. I understand that there is only one link and one suggestion for the creation of an article. In order to solve the issue and to keep the project in harmony with all other States and Federal District, as a compromise I will create the article Aracaju-Aeroclube de Sergipe. Thanks (Brunoptsem (talk) 21:53, 26 October 2021 (UTC))[]
It won't be enough as the necessary amount of links needed for a navbox is five. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:13, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
How about keeping it for now? (Brunoptsem (talk) 22:17, 26 October 2021 (UTC))[]
We don't keep templates like navboxes simply because it may be needed. Either it has enough uses or it doesn't. Would you prefer making it as a subpage of yours until more articles are created as you intend to do? --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 22:22, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]

Template:Cleanup title

[edit]

The proper process for requesting that the title of an article be changed is Wikipedia:Requested moves. All of these template do nothing other than put to page into an evidently unmonitored maintenance category (Category:Wikipedia title cleanup) and shunt the burden of going through the requested moves process to someone else. Also, if kept, consider merging into one template rather than having five templates that all do the same thing.

For transparency, I removed {{cleanup title}} and {{disputed title}} from several articles (and did the task of starting a requested move in several cases) before starting this TfD. * Pppery * it has begun... 21:33, 16 October 2021 (UTC)[]

  • Delete all per nom. If someone thinks the current title should be changed, they should RM and not make work for other editors. Gonnym (talk) 10:39, 17 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Oppose This has a valid use case: when a name change is desired but would benefit from further discussion before a WP:RM is initiated (such as when there are no suggested titles or too many). For {{Inappropriate title}}, there's additionally the "should the title be changed to match the content or vice versa?" consideration. Furthermore, I think that if these were deleted, somebody would have to go through all the transclusions manually first and decide in each individual case whether the appropriate course would be to remove the template without doing anything about the title, to start a WP:RM, or to WP:BOLDLY move the page to a new title. I also don't agree that these templates are redundant to each other; they offer some nuance as to what the problem with the title is, and that's a good thing. TompaDompa (talk) 23:11, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete How many title templates do we really need? And all are used on a short number of articles. Those articles in question can be discussed on the talk pages or requested moves. --WikiCleanerMan (talk) 23:59, 20 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete, seems completely out of process and no work is being done to fix the titles. We already have WP:RM which centralizes any discussion for title movement. Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 23:04, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete per nom and Gonnym. Tom (LT) (talk) 02:45, 23 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Opposed more or less per TompaDompa. The statement that placing a template "shunt[s] the burden... to someone else" isn't always true: it might never go through the process, or the person who originally placed it might come back and do it later. If someone else does pick it up, so much the better. Finally, it serves as documentary value (especially if |reason= and alternate title params are included) and may make induce other editors to head to talk, or even oppose it and come up with a better idea. Mathglot (talk) 02:19, 24 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Oppose, mostly per Mathglot and TompaDompa - there needs to be a way to highlight that the current title is somehow incorrect or disputed without having to also know what the best alternative is. Placing this template should always be accompanied by starting a discussion on the talk page (or placing a link there to a discussion happening elsewhere) and if this does not happen within 24 hours then the template should be removed without action. Ideally it should also trigger an article alerts entry, but (a) I don't know if that's possible and (b) this is probably off-topic for this discussion. These discussions should, within a reasonable time, lead to one of three outcomes - (1) consensus that the current title is unproblematic, (2) an uncontroversial move to another title, or (3) an RM discussion. • Delete. The functionality mentioned by Thryduulf already exists in {{requested move}}, from WP:RSPM: Replace NewName with the requested new name of the page (or with a simple question mark, if you want more than one possible new name to be considered). This does open a formal RM which is listed on WP:RM and will eventually be formally closed; that has the benefit of expediting the process, for better or for worse. If one wants to test the waters, they can always start an informal talk page discussion about the best title for the article without (or before) opening a formal RM. Maintenance templates such as those listed here tend to languish on articles for eternity, and nothing ever gets done.
P.S. Whichever way this discussion ends, I'd like to express my gratitude to TompaDompa and Pppery for starting the necessary cleanup work at the tagged articles. No such user (talk) 06:42, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
That covers some of the functionality I mention, but does not indicate to readers that the current title is incorrect/inappropriate and an informal discussion is even more likely to languish than a maintenance template. Maintenance templates languishing is not a problem with the template, but with a lack of people doing the work (see also requested splits and mergers). Thryduulf (talk) 14:49, 26 October 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Delete. Keep !voters have successfully argued that there exists a plausible use case for these templates—articles that ought to be moved but we're not sure where. However, a plausible use case doesn't mean that the templates should automatically be kept. Looking at the costs vs. benefits, I think it would be difficult to police inappropriate ("shunting") use of the template, and even in the appropriate uses, I think the more effective approach for those situations is to start an RM to something to draw in !voters on an unwatched page or, on a popular page, to start a preliminary talk discussion. Regarding how to proceed with the deletion, someone could create a list of the transclusions and place that at WP:RM for someone to go through sometime. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 19:53, 29 October 2021 (UTC)[]
