William Lucking Dies: ‘Sons of Anarchy’s Piney & Veteran Character Actor Was 80
William Lucking, who played Piney Winston in FX’s Sons of Anarchy and had 100-plus other film and TV credits during a nearly half-century career, has died, his agent confirmed to Deadline. He was 80.

Lucking died October 18 at his home in Las Vegas. No cause of death has been revealed.

An obituary shared by his wife Sigrid Lucking reads, “Although William often played toughs and strongmen, in his actual life he was an elegant man with a brilliant intellect who loved to argue about politics and current affairs, discuss philosophy and physics, and assert fine-pointed opinions about art and poetry.”

Lucking was born on June 17, 1941, in Michigan and moved with his family to California in the 1950s. With a degree in literature from UCLA, he furthered his theater studies at the Pasadena Playhouse.

He will appear in the role of Fire Lord Ozai. The character is described as the ruthlessly-driven leader of the Fire Nation who demands everyone live up to his impossible standards, especially his teen son, Prince Zuko. Ozai’s drive to conquer and unite the world under firebender rule is a family burden — he believes that it’s his destiny to finish a war started by his ancestors. The character was voiced by Mark Hamill in the animated series.

‘Ted Lasso’ Star Hannah Waddingham Joins Cast of Masterpiece and ITV’s ‘Tom Jones’
Hannah Waddingham, Emmy winner for Apple TV Plus series “Ted Lasso,” is joining leads Solly McLeod and Sophie Wilde in the cast of Masterpiece and U.K. broadcaster ITV’s literary classic adaptation, “Tom Jones.”

Waddingham has been cast as the seductive and vengeful Lady Bellaston in the miniseries, which is currently filming in Northern Ireland.

Based on Henry Fielding’s classic 1749 novel “The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling,” the series follows the romantic and chivalrous adventures of adopted Tom Jones in 18th-century England.

McLeod (“The Rising”) plays the hero Tom, alongside Wilde (“You Don’t Know Me”) as the heroine Sophia Western.

IATSE Contract Ratification Vote Will Begin Nov. 12, Results on Nov. 15
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees has set a date for a ratification vote for its new three-year contract. Voting will begin on Friday, Nov. 12, and the results will be announced on Nov. 15.

Voting will be conducted electronically, and the deadline for members to cast ballots is 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time on Nov. 14.

The union leadership is urging 60,000 members to back the contract, which provides for a 54-hour weekend rest period and pay hikes for the lowest-paid workers. The leadership reached the deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on Oct. 16, averting a nationwide film and TV production strike.

‘Cocomelon’ Owner Moonbug Entertainment Sells to Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs’ Blackstone-Backed Company
Moonbug Entertainment, the company behind the wildly popular children’s show “Cocomelon,” has been acquired by Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs’ unnamed media venture. Though the terms of the deal were not made public, Bloomberg reports that the pricetag was $3 billion.

This marks the second acquisition for the former Disney execs’ company, which is backed by private equity firm Blackstone Group Inc. In August, Mayer and Staggs purchased Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production banner for $900 million.

Moonbug’s founders, René Rechtman and John Robson, will retain equity stakes in Mayer and Staggs’ company, in addition to Moonbug’s management team.
