Organizer Retrospective for WordPress Translation Day 2021

The WordPress Translation Day (WPTD) 2021 events recap was published on wptranslationday.org. This post includes an overview of the WPTD 6th edition in September 2021, statistics from the events, and other highlights. Check it out, translate it and share!

Below is an overview of the WordPress Translation Day 2021 planning process, what worked well, and what could be improved for next year. While feedback was open to all the WPTD global organizers, these may not reflect everyone’s thoughts, so if you have opinions, suggestions, and other ideas for future organizers, please share those in the comments!

An overview of WPTD 2021 planning

WordPress Translation Day 2021 had some new elements compared to previous editions of WPTD. In June 2021, there was a proposal to host WPTD events spanning the month of September. The organizing team decided to encourage local events throughout the month for more schedule flexibility, with a series of global events in English to take place within a two-week period: September 17 to 30, 2021.

Global organizing for this year’s WPTD happened in a dedicated SlackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/. instance aimed at helping organizers more easily coordinate between teams and tasks. This resulted in a couple of posts to the Make/Polyglots blog to share team updates with the broader Polyglots community. There were roughly four organizing teams, with a lot of cross-over and many organizers working across areas:

  • Website and Design
  • Local events
  • Global events
  • Marketing/Communications

Organizers had a weekly, asynchronous check-in on Slack using automated reminders to share how they were doing, what they were working on, and any help they needed. We primarily coordinated tasks in the WPTD Trello board, and later created a private P2p2 "p2" is the name of the theme that blogs at make.wordpress.org use (and o2 is the accompanying plugin). When asked to post something "on the p2" by a member of the Polyglots team, that usually means you're asked to post on the team blog https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/. for the WPTD organizing team to better plan on specific tasks – for example, coordinating Polyglots Appreciation nominees before they were public. This site was mostly used for writing longer proposals to facilitate feedback, particularly since we decided to skip video-based meetings due to timezone issues.

Create a GlotDict channel on…

Create a GlotDict channel on slackSlack Slack is a Collaborative Group Chat Platform https://slack.com/. The WordPress community has its own Slack Channel at https://make.wordpress.org/chat/.

As today, we are using private messages, but you can understand that is against the openess of WordPress and is blocking us to involve more people in the project. Also, just for bug reporting or helping people.
Basically we are lacking the touch with the users of the extension and create a Slack instance or any other chat for this it will be too much.
As the tool is mentioned in the translate doc I don’t think that have a slack channel is a problem as the project is open sourceOpen Source Open Source denotes software for which the original source code is made freely available and may be redistributed and modified. Open Source **must be** delivered via a licensing model, see GPL. and when will (if) migrated inside the org I think that can be considered official.

Move GlotDict inside GlotPress organization…

Move GlotDict inside GitHubGitHub GitHub is a website that offers online implementation of git repositories that can can easily be shared, copied and modified by other developers. Public repositories are free to host, private repositories require a paid subscription. GitHub introduced the concept of the ‘pull request’ where code changes done in branches by contributors can be reviewed and discussed before being merged be the repository owner. https://github.com/ GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. organization

I don’t know how many of you saw the latest release of GlotDict extension. The extension now is not maintained anymore by only me (also I am not localizing anymore) but also with code/maintain from @vladytimy and @webaxones.

For this reason I worked on getting the project not dependent/blocked by me as much is possible. Today is requested only to deployDeploy Launching code from a local development environment to the production web server, so that it's available to visitors. on Chrome the new release (the webstore is very crappy for automation), on Firefox is automatic.

Discussing with the GD team (us) we are here asking if it is possible to move the project inside the umbrella of GlotPress GH organization to give more visibility and improve the brand of the project.

Notes

If you are wondering how many users has the extension on Firefox and Chrome, there is this page updated daily: http://mte90.tech/ExtStoreStats/data/glotdict.html
Also not forget that usually on WordCampWordCamp WordCamps are casual, locally-organized conferences covering everything related to WordPress. They're one of the places where the WordPress community comes together to teach one another what they’ve learned throughout the year and share the joy. Learn more. there was pick of installation as it was suggested on this kind of events and us as devs don’t promote it so much except on those cases.

PS: I’m writing this after talking with @amieiro.
