Improving the translation support for Luxembourgish Wikipedia[Quelltext änneren]

Salut!

Apologies as this message is not in your native language, Hëlleft wgl. fir an Är Sprooch z'iwwersetzen.

Content translation has been successful in supporting the translation process on many Wikipedia communities, and we want to help additional wikis with the potential to grow using translation as part of a new initiative.

Content translation facilitates the creation of Wikipedia articles by translating content from other languages. It has been used already to create more than half a million articles. In addition, the tool provides mechanisms to encourage the creation of good quality content, preventing the publication of lightly edited machine translations. In general, our analysis shows that the translations produced are less likely to be deleted than the articles started from scratch.

Luxembourgish Wikipedia editors have used Content translation to create more than ninety articles. We think that there is potential to use translation to create more articles, expand existing ones, and attract new editors that learn how to make productive edits. Translation can help the community to reduce the language gap with other languages and grow the number of editors in a sustainable way. In order to achieve this goal, we want to collaborate with you to make Content translation more visible in the Luxembourgish Wikipedia and support new ways to translate.

As a first step, during the next weeks we plan to enable Content translation by default on Luxembourgish Wikipedia. That will make it easy for users to discover the tool through several entry points. However, users not interested in translation will still be able to disable it from their preferences.

Please feel free to share any comment in this conversation thread.

Thanks!

Proposal: Set two-letter project shortcuts as alias to project namespace globally[Quelltext änneren]

Hëlleft wgl. fir an Är Sprooch z'iwwersetzen

Hello everyone,

I apologize for posting in English. I would like to inform everyone that I created a new global request for comment (GRFC) at Meta Wiki, which may affect your project: m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

In this GRFC, I propose that two-project shortcuts for project names will become a default alias for the project namespace. For instance, on all Wikipedias, WP will be an alias to the Wikipedia: namespace (and similar for other projects). Full list is available in the GRFC.

This is already the case for Wikivoyages, and many individual projects asked for this alias to be implemented. I believe this makes it easier to access the materials in the project namespace, as well as creating shortcuts like WP:NPOV, as well as helps new projects to use this feature, without having to figure out how to request site configuration changes first.

As far as I can see, Wikipedia currently does not have such an alias set. This means that such an alias will be set for you, if the GRFC is accepted by the global community.

I would like to ask all community members to participate in the request for comment at Meta-Wiki, see m:Requests for comment/Set short project namespace aliases by default globally.

Please feel free to ask me if you have any questions about this proposal.

Best regards,

Checking files - what to do?[Quelltext änneren]

Hello from Denmark!

I hope you are all safe and happy!

You still remember me? :-)

I have not been very active on lb.wiki for some time because I took a wikibreak and because most of the files on lb.wiki have been checked.

Atm. there are 2.276 files on lb.wiki (2.290 files when posted):

The reason the numbers does not match the total is that some files are in both categories. For example a photo of a statue. The statue is non-free but the photographer placed the photo under a free license. And a few might not have a license.

In a perfect world all the free files could be moved to Commons. Some files are allready there and could perhaps be deleted:

But still some files remail here. In short they are probably still on lb.wiki because they can't be moved to Commons. The reason is most likely that they lack a good source, author or there is no permission.

Some of the files can perhaps be fixed if someone manage to contact the copyright holder and get a valid permission send to the OTRS system.

It hurts to delete files that are still in use but some wikis have decided that it is better to delete than to keep files that are not okay for Commons.

My first question is if you would like to keep such files and if yes all or should there be some criteria that have to be met before the file can be kept?

Then there are the non-free files. All of those files should have a valid rationale to be kept. Only way to find out is the check all the files one by one.

But that is not my topic for today.

En.wiki have some rules that:

  1. Orphan non-free files have to be deleted
  2. Non-free files may only be used in articles (meaning not on user pages and discussion pages)
  3. Old versions of non-free files have to be deleted or hidden
  4. Non-free files may only be small (for example width x length should max equal 100.000 pixels)

My second question is if all of those rules apply for lb.wiki too?

Keeping track of all those requirements may be hard without an easy way to find files that does not meet the requirements. The best is if you have local users that can check regulary.

If there are no users around that can do that then I may be able to check from time to time. I have made some queries that could help:

  1. Files with no license: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/45461 (most are probably in Special:UncategorizedFiles)
  2. Orphan non-free files: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/44024 (most are probably in Special:UnusedFiles)
  3. Non-free files used outside articles: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/53404
  4. Oversized non-free files (bigger than 100,000 pixels): https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/52838
  5. Non-free files with old versions: https://quarry.wmflabs.org/query/53406

I also help out on vi.wiki and uk.wiki and I managed to get a user from uk.wiki to use a bot on vi.wiki to reduce non-free files that are too big.

If lb.wiki have many files that are too big then I could perhaps get the user to help out here too.

But before that you need to decide how big files may be and perhaps clean up a bit in non-free files to make sure that there are not too many files that does not have a valid rationale.

My third question is if anyone here knows how to make lists like above and run a bot to reduce size of files and if not if you would perhaps be willing to (happy if) a user from another wiki used a bot here?

That was a long post. I know! But I think that it is important that community agree before any things are changed.

You are of course very welcome to discuss in Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch). --MGA73 (Diskussioun) 14:48, 20. Mäe. 2021 (UTC)[äntweren]

Universal Code of Conduct – 2021 consultations[Quelltext änneren]

Universal Code of Conduct Phase 2[Quelltext änneren]

Hëlleft wgl. fir an Är Sprooch z'iwwersetzen

The Universal Code of Conduct (UCoC) provides a universal baseline of acceptable behavior for the entire Wikimedia movement and all its projects. The project is currently in Phase 2, outlining clear enforcement pathways. You can read more about the whole project on its project page.

Drafting Committee: Call for applications[Quelltext änneren]

The Wikimedia Foundation is recruiting volunteers to join a committee to draft how to make the code enforceable. Volunteers on the committee will commit between 2 and 6 hours per week from late April through July and again in October and November. It is important that the committee be diverse and inclusive, and have a range of experiences, including both experienced users and newcomers, and those who have received or responded to, as well as those who have been falsely accused of harassment.

To apply and learn more about the process, see Universal Code of Conduct/Drafting committee.

2021 community consultations: Notice and call for volunteers / translators[Quelltext änneren]

From 5 April – 5 May 2021 there will be conversations on many Wikimedia projects about how to enforce the UCoC. We are looking for volunteers to translate key material, as well as to help host consultations on their own languages or projects using suggested key questions. If you are interested in volunteering for either of these roles, please contact us in whatever language you are most comfortable.

To learn more about this work and other conversations taking place, see Universal Code of Conduct/2021 consultations.

Geographesch Nimm[Quelltext änneren]

Dës Diskussioun gouf aus der Diskussioun:Haalsbaach (Bäerdref) heihi geknäipt well en allgemenge Standpunkt erwënscht ass.

Moien,

Firwat ginn hei Stroossennimm geännert?

E Stroossennumm gëtt per Gemengeregelement festgehalen, dann ass et, sou fannen ech, net un der Wikipedia, dat interpretéieren oder 'verbesseren' ze goen.

Um Geoportail sinn d'Nimm ze fannen, wéi s'offiziell heeschen. Hei iwregens eng Foto wou d'Schëld ze gesinn ass vun der Hammhafferstrooss. D'Biirkelterstrooss béit vun do of: File:Wayside cross and chapel Berdorf Hammhafferstrooss 2016-07.jpg.

Bescht Gréiss,

--Zinneke (Diskussioun) 16:17, 18.

Firwat wuel? Ma warscheinlech well déi besseres ze dinn hunn wéi lo all déi Nimm z'änneren. Awer mer sollten entweder dat eent oder dat anert hunn a keen Duercherneen. Ech soen dat hei am Numm vun all de Wikipedianer déi bei de Verbesserunge vun de geographeschen Nimm gehollef hunn an hëllefen. --Les Meloures (Diskussioun) 19:17, 18. Jun. 2021 (UTC)[äntweren]

Moien. Mir krute kloer erkläert datt geografesch Nimm déi mat "er" ophalen ausernnee geschriwwe ginn.Dat fënns du am Reegelwierk. --Soued031 (Diskussioun) 19:29, 18. Jun. 2021 (UTC)[äntweren]

PS: Den Artikel hei heescht Haalsbaach. Um Geoportal steet Halsbaach. Mir hunn en Artikel Bierkelt cf. LOD um Geoportal steet Birkelt. Um Geoportal steet Biirkelterstrooss, wat s du jo och sees awer an denger Beschrweiwung vun der Foto schreifs de selwer Bierkelterstrooss. U wat hale mer ons elo? Ech mengen eng Prinzipiendiskussioun op déi een an Zukunft kéint hiweise wier wichteg, fir datt net ëmmer nees al Zoppen opgewiermt ginn. --Les Meloures (Diskussioun) 08:05, 19. Jun. 2021 (UTC)[äntweren]
Et wier an deem Sënn och gutt wa keng Verbesserunge méi vu geographeschen Nimm gemaach ginn bis mer e Konsens fonnt hunn. --Les Meloures (Diskussioun) 09:45, 19. Jun. 2021 (UTC)[äntweren]
Gudden Owend,
Wann ech an engem Artikel op en Numm stoussen, ersetzen ech e fir datt e konform mat den neie Reegelen ass. Wann et mech am Fong bei Nimm wéi Areler Strooss oder Lonkecher Strooss net stéiert, muss ech zouginn, datt ech et awer bosseg fanne bei Stroosse wéi z. B. dem Berliner Wee oder dem Hammer Dällchen. Et ass awer warscheinlech einfach d'Gewunnecht, well et laang anescht (falsch) geschriwwe gouf…
Sou wéi mer chinesesch op chineesesch a schwedesch op schweedesch g'ännert hu fir konform mat den neie Reegelen ze sinn, sou solle mer et menger Meenung no och mat den Odonymme maachen.
D'Nimm vun de Stroossen an enger Gemeng gi gemenkerhand vum Schäfferot (net iwwer e Gemengereglement) festgehalen. Ech weess z. B. och aus zouverlässeger Quell, datt an der Stad Lëtzebuerg déi Odonymmen déi op lëtzebuergesch sinn, vum CPLL op hier Schreifweis iwwerpréift a verbessert goufen, datt dat awer net heescht, datt elo all Stroosseschëlter verbessert ginn.
Sou wéi mer an engem änleche Sujet och festgehalen haten déi richteg Reegel fir „Firmennimm“ unzewennen an z.
Heiansdo schéckt d'Gemeng et richteg eran, mä et gëtt vertippt a falsch agedroen. All di Leit kachen eben och nëmme mat Waasser. Bei OpenStreetMap hu mir méi wéi 600 Verbesserungen - di Meescht sinn an der Lëscht hei: https://github.com/osmlu/csventrifuge/blob/master/rules/luxembourg_addresses/rue.csv. -- Stereo (Diskussioun) 22:18, 19. The official data, including the four most voted candidates, will be announced as soon as the Elections Committee completes their review of the ballots. The official announcement of the new trustees appointed will happen later, once the selected candidates have been confirmed by the Board.

6,946 community members from 216 wiki projects have voted. This makes 10.2% global participation, 1.1% higher than in the last Board elections. In 2017, 5167 people from 202 wiki projects cast their vote. A full analysis is planned to be published in a few days when the confirmed results are announced. In the meantime, you can check the data produced during the election.

Diversity was an important goal with these elections. Messages about the Board election were translated into 61 languages. This outreach worked well. There were 70 communities with eligible voters voting in this election for the first time. With your help, next year’s Board of Trustees election will be even better.

Call for Candidates for the Movement Charter Drafting Committee ending 14 September 2021[Quelltext änneren]

  • Erfahrung in interkultureller Kommunikation mitbringen.

Möchtest du dich gerne in diesem Prozess engagieren? Dann reiche deine Kandidatur hier ein. Wenn du Fragen hast, schreib gerne an strategy2030(_AT_)wikimedia.org.
