I am very happy to announce that 0.72 is now available. Here are some of the new features:
- An important security fix
- Tons of bug fixes
- Password protected posts
- Cursor-aware quicktags (like using a fancy text-editor)
- Improved API support: full or near full support for the Blogger, MetaWeblog, and MT APIs
- New template design from Dave Shea
- New configuration method, no more editing files!
- New Blogger import
- Improved upgrade and install scripts.
- Improved post and edit interface
- RSS feeds for comments
- RSS feeds support Conditional GET
- Improved XHTML auto-formatting
- Improved Link Manager
- Geographical data support
- Improved image upload features
- Improved calendar
- Improved smilies function
- No more invalid characters
- Increased customizability
- And more!
As you can see, despite the small version bump there are a huge number of improvements in this version, and it has been tested more extensively than any version so far. It is available for download from Sourceforge or through other methods.
Please confirm that the final release of 0.72 is identical to 0.72RC1. I installed 0.72RC1, modified some files, and don’t really want to install 0.72 final version if it’s avoidable. Everything works like a charm so far and the ability to view the Comments within the admin interface is extremely helpful. The new template is also an improvement. I removed the “valid XHTML” button link, however, because, possibly to modifications I made to the index.php file, the site is not validating as XHTML.

“New configuration method, no more editing files!”
from the wordpress-072-gold readme.html file:
“Copy wp-config.sample.php to wp-config.php. Open wp-config.php in a text editor and modify the variables as explained in the comments. Comments are lines that start with /* or //”
/me is confused.

darn, sorry for the multiple comments. anyways where it is talking about the author functions, the_author_email() is there twice and the second description is wrong.

David Mattison: There have been changes between RC1 and the 0.72 “Gold” release. Sorry, but there was a flurry of bug fixes (mostly minor) even as we were preparing to make the release public, and even some that made it in between the initial packaging of the release and the official announcment.
huphtur: You only have to edit the wp-config.php file once, at the initial install. You shouldn’t ever need to edit it again, unless you have to change something in your database setup (e.g. if the password for accessing your mysql database changed). All other changes, even when we add new features with new configuration options, are controlled via the web administration interface.

I kept getting “File not found” when I tried to download from the sourceforge?

Thanks very much. This is a great new release, and the upgrade from 0.71 went very smoothly (after I figured out that I needed to change the table-name prefix to “b2″… duh). The slick javascript tricks for tags in the editing window are the best part.

Oh, it’s because of my download manager – I’ve got the file now after I disabled it, going to try it soon ^___^
