Montclair Construction
1.0
We called Montclair Construction to repair a water leak in our living room. The leak affected some plaster molding work and re-plastering of walls. Once the project team provided us the estimate, we elected to have them do some additional work replacing metal window frames and installing French Doors off the dining room. The entire project was to take three weeks. By the time they finally cleaned up their suppllies and left, it was nearly 12 weeks later. In the course of our project, MC fired their primary project manager - the one who made significant promises to us about re-painting, professional cleaning and schedules. Everything we had in writing, we held them to. They sub-contracted most of the work, and as the project wore on they quit paying the subcontractor saying that he had gone over budget. Meanwhile, I had a sub contractor who's schedule was erratic. Who brought day laborers in and out on a regular basis and who didn't seem very experienced. As evidenced by the night he landed in jail and delayed the project a few more days. When the team began installing the french doors, they had to take up some boards from my deck. They then offered to update the boards on the entire deck. I agreed. The first set of replacement boards that went down were only 1 inch thick. I had to demand that they be pulled up and replaced. After all the work was done, I learned that my original boards had been mahogany (I was a new home owner) and that the subcontractors had in essence stolen them right out from under me. As the project dragged on, I had to monitor and harass both the project manager and Montclair Construction almost daily. I was continuously told that they were way over budget and that they would not be addressing any more details: carpet cleaning, professional cleaning of my house from dust and dirt. All things that were promised to me. Let along broken light fixtures. When the work was finally done and the painting was initiated, the subcontractor brought in laborers to do the work. They put the wrong finishes on the wall and trim (flat on trim, acrylic on wall). I could only get Montclair Construction to pay for the cost of new paint to repair the work, and not for the cost of the professional painter. We ultimately tried to take the paint cost (about $1000) to court, only to have the professional painter (that MC recommended finally) arrive and refute our claim that we had hired him to repair the originally faulty painting. The whole process was a nightmare.

Armstrong Installation Service
5.0
Although a significant error was made, and although that took months to resolve, I am giving an and quot;Aand quot; rating to the company. They never gave up working to resolve the issue, and never attempted to shift blame or evade responsibility. The actual foaming process was seamless. They showed up on time, early in the day, with what amounts to a huge hair drier. The roof was made toasty warm and dry, and the coating applied. The crew allowed me to observe from the roof, they communicated well, and cleaned up after themselves. These guys know foam. The crew chief had 17 years of continuity with the company. Unfortunately their chief carpenter was out that day. The assistant cut the skylight hole and found a beam in the way. This itself is not unusual. What he did next is the problem: he cut a bigger and bigger ragged hole, then cut a chunk out of a roof joist deliberately and without asking. The tube skylight used can adjust for small offsets, so the cut was not even needed. For future jobs I feel Armstrong should: 1. At bid time, plot out a primary and alternative location for any skylight, in case job site conditions mandate a change. 2. Never cut a structural beam without asking the client first. It took multiple tries to get the roof joist repaired adequately (the roof uses 2x4 joists at 24 inch centers: so each joist counts especially in earthquake country). But Armstrong stuck it through at significant expense. The eventually offered a small consideration for the hassle we were exposed to.

Westshore Roofing Inc
5.0
I wanted to have a flat roof repaired or coated. It was a challenge to find a roofing company who was willing to this work. I called Westshore Roofing and I got an appointment with Joe. We had initial scheduling conflict because they were so busy but otherwise the whole experience was wonderful. I had to admit that Westshore Roofing was not the cheapest vendor but they were willing to stand by their work and gave me a long term 8 year no leak warranty. Joe kept me in the loop by sending me pictures of his work progress and texting me with the information. The coating process take a while since it needs to dry before they would paint the second coat. Joe was wonderful and I felt like I could trust him. A week or so later, I had to get electrical work done. My electrician asked me if I had my roof fixed recently. I said yes and my electrical commented not once but twice how wonderful my roof looked! And he complemented the work done by Joe. I felt so relieved and grateful about the work Joe has done. And I felt good about spending extra dollars to get quality work done. I would recommend Westshore Roofing to anyone and especially work done by Joe Lucero.
