In the process of remodeling our master bath, our contractor discovered a patch of mold behind a dresser in painted over wallpaper. With a 4 and 2 year old in the house, we were naturally concerned. After reading the Angieslist reviews we decided to give Rich a call. He inspected our entire house from attic to basement. He addressed my areas of specific concern. A prelim report was emailed to me the next day. Final report within a week. His service is consistent with the other positive reviews on Angieslist. Overall he was professional, affable, and readily available.

This is my first review on Angie's list. I felt compelled to write one of behalf of Rich because his service truly goes over and beyond. Rich is a consummate professional. He is courteous, responsive, knowledgeable, and thorough. He was always reachable by phone or email and when you are in a situation that is stressful, this level or service feels like a lifesaver. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone. I am extremely thankful for everything he did for us.

Jayce was very thorough and gave plenty of pointers on how to keep our house mold free throughout the inspection. The results came fast, and Jayce also did a follow up to see how we were doing. We also had them come out after raw sewage flooded our house to make sure the everything was safe and up to code. Great service!

Richard really cares about his clients, and goes above and beyond to make sure that they are taken care of, even by third party contractors. Simply outstanding.

It went well. The first visit two tests were done. One near the water stains and the other outside my front door for comparison. The test results took three days. The spore count in my home was high. Richard called me that evening to explain what needed to be done. He referred me to a contractor. Once the remediation work was done, he performed the clearance testing and some additional tests I requested to make sure the spore count was at a reasonable level. Richard was knowledgeable, professional, and responsive.

Richard has been great and i would definitely recommend him to anyone. We had a pipe burst in our house that caused substantial damages and required the removal of dry wall and flooring. During this work, mold was uncovered in the wall and floor and we were left with an open moldy hole in the wall and a serious mold problem in the house. I immediately called Richard to perform an inspection to see how bad the problem was. He came very promptly and was very reassuring and informative. He performed a very thorough mold inspection and found additional mold that we were not aware of in the crawl space under our house and had also been caused by our flooding event. He performed airborne testing and swab testing and returned a very professional report to us showing that we had high levels of mold inside our house and crawlspace and what species were present. He provided detailed recommendations for mold remediation and a referral to a company for pasteurization. The company he referred us to were great and performed the mold abatement and Richard then returned to perform additional testing once that was complete. Richard has been very professional and helpful to us, even going the extra mile to help us with an insurance claim and we would definitely hire him again if the need arose.

Arriving on time he gave us a background and details regarding mold in the house, the introduction of same, the health related issues regarding same and the solutions and methods for removal. Took about 15 minutes and was more interesting than one would imagine. Pleasantly surprised. As he suited up (think moon suit) we had to close all windows and doors per outside ventilation, then he triggered a device to check air levels in our various rooms and moved throughout each room in the house. It reminded me of a Home Blessing! He then took his devices down into our crawl space and remained their for almost 30 minutes; when emerging he informed us that the air in our home was mold free and he so no traces of fungus or mold in the crawl space, however he would inform us completely after his lab ran tests from samples he collected below. In about an hour he had finished. We paid him and about a week or so later we got a 5 page report reporting we have no mold or fungus issues in our abode. This past Winter we had about 10" of rain in as many days and, for the first time, our crawl space was flooded. Two days of sump pump and industrial dryers blowing and sucking our vents mandated his expert analysis for our peace of mind. Also while here he gave us ideas on prevention of flooding as well as how to set up monitors for moisture down below. He also gave us several names of those who could do such work.

Tony arrived on time, did a visual inspection of the all the rooms in the house and used a meter to check the walls for excess moisture. He then did air tests in two rooms as well as one outside to use as a baseline. He took time to explain what he was doing and what he was looking for. Very friendly and professional.

I wanted to test my 1,500 sq ft flat for mold and whatever else due to a lingering cough and saw surface mold from a dripped uneven shower door. The inquire began with a basic internet search to 3 providers to see the price range and service that would be provided. The 2 other venders were so focus on price and that they did not provide remedies so no conflict of interest issues. Despite the lower price, I felt like being pressured into buying a car. Initial estimate - Wanted to know some basic info. on mold, etc. and spoke with Craig who was very easy to talk to. We actually spent over 30 on the phone which was very helpful and decided to go with MIS of SF. Inspection - Robert showed up on time and was very professional. The the full inspection with 3 air samples and a wall cavity test. He spent close to 3 hours to carefully check all the areas needed. One negative is that I had two small rooms (bath and hall) that are adjacent and it was recommended that air sample be taken with both rooms. I did find this pretty stupid considering they are adjacent with no all blocking airway. So I opt. to only test one of the two rooms. In addition, it is important to ask questions during the inspection instead of just from a report. Report - After receiving the report, I contact Brandon who was very helpful in explaining the results. The report was pretty easy to follow I guess but it is much easier to have someone walk you through it over the phone. Overall experience - Since this is my 1st and hopefully last experience with mold, I have to rate MIS a B+ (Angie's List show provide + (-)). In summary: Pros: Very professional, friend service, and a local phone number. Cons: $ Price. Others providers where charging less so felt I was paying a little more but no regret doing so because the service was excellent. The inspector should explain and outline how much and roughly the area registered for moisture. Luckily I asked to know how much of the drywall I had to replace otherwise I would removed the whole thing.

Solid service, alerted me to potential areas where water might be in the walls. Nice guy, incredibly responsive and flexible. However the basic test doesn't really tell you anything... you really need an air sample sent in to Lab which costs quite a bit more ($300). then to actually fix the issue you have to spend thousands to pasteurize the area.. I'm not sure if there are other options. Of course none of that really has to do with the fact that Richard did everything that was advertised in a timely manner.

Originally we had gone with a different mold inspection company, who did a shabby job. (I even suspect they were trying to scam us.) Rich was extremely professional and helped us figure out what was going on, potentially saving us a TON of money in what would have been needless mold remediation. I would hire him again and recommend him to anyone.

I had recently had my home inspected and was concerned about mold and what to do about it. I called Mr Standish because I had just used him for my home inspection, and he was again able to do the mold testing right away, and got back the results to me within a few days. It was helpful to have him answer questions about the test results, and the problem was minor, and something that did not require any major work(thank goodness!)Mr Standish is very knowledgeable about his work, and is honest, which I truely appreciate.

Very easy to reach. The people answering the phones were extremely knowledgeable and spoke English fluently. We faxed back the contact and had an appointment in a few days, even though they were very busy. We contacted many companies before using this one, because of their expertise and specific plan for inspection. Our situation was unusual. We bought a house where the acoustic ceilings were removed without prior testing. The tester came on-time and was very professional. He knew exactly where to get the wall samples, so they would also have joint compound samples. He cleaned up after himself. We got the reports exactly on-time. We would use them again if we need more testing.

Richard Gray is a straight shooter who was great to work with, and didn't upsell anything. We used a coupon from Angie's list, and then had him come back for resting. He recommended the person who used to remove the mold. And we've had no issues since that treatment. Very helpful guy and glad we found him through Angie's List. A quick note about the inspection service we received and the actual cost. We knew exactly where the problem was, but had him inspect the house for our sake of mind. Our problem was such that it could not be handled on our own, and we opted for the professional cleaning since we have a child. -Angela

Richard responded to my initial call right away and set up an appointment. He showed up on time for the appointment, actually a little early (he called first to check that it was OK). I had what I thought was an issue in a window frame, and he checked that out first. He took air samples inside and outside the house, then took some physical samples from the window frame. After that we did a walk around the entire house exterior and Richard pointed out areas of possible concern, or possible future concern and suggestions on what to do. He checked under the house as well, then went through the interior of the house. On the interior, he also tested for moisture in walls, around windows, bathrooms, floors etc. and found one unknown issue with one of the baths. He gave me a lot of good feedback and suggestions. Richard sent the samples off for evaluation and the results came back on the exact day he said they would. Fortunately we have a mold free, healthy home, but he did find one unknown moisture issue that would have gotten much worse had he not found it. Richard is very professional and knows how to provide exceptional service. I think it was great value for the money and I do highly recommend him.

I use them after they announced a special offer of $79.95 for an inspection or something like that. My view of what I received was that I paid the price to get an estimate, which should have been free. Somebody just came in and looked around and said what it would cost to get the thing fixed. He didn't look any place else. I would expect that if I had called the company to give me an estimate that they would come over and look at things and give me an estimate. I certainly wouldn't expect to pay something for it. He will be coming back to do service. I haven't told him that I don't want it. I still haven't decided whether I'm going to avail myself of that or not.

I called Rich the day before for an appointment and he agreed to come in next day morning. He arrived early and started the work and finished on time. He also agreed to mark the tests as urgent for the lab as I was running short on time for repair. I got the report back in 2 days and Rich emailed it to me and also called me up to let me know that the results are in. I am very happy with the services he provided and will go to him again if needed

Recent Review: Richard is an amazing mold specialist who took care to thoroughly inspect my apartment ahead of my DoD sponsored move. He took care to ensure that my moving company received more than adequate proof and documentation that my belongings were free and clear of mold in an apartment complex that is highly susceptible to it, here in Monterey. I would highly recommend his services to those who require the highest expertise in mold inspection, testing and mitigation. Thank you so much!

Recent Review: Inspector showed up right on time and began his inspection. He brought air sampling devices, infrared camera, etc. to do a quite comprehensive home and mold inspection. He checked all items of concern regarding the plumbing, electrical, air conditioning unit, etc. I was extremely impressed by the scope of the inspection and knowledge of the inspector. I chose them because the have all the legitimate certifications. They where there for over two hours and the report I received shortly thereafter was very informative and helpful. I would highly recommend them to anyone who needs a home or mold inspection.

Dana from 'The Water Damage Experts' came out, tested the walls, found them dry, smelled the smells, saw no visible mold, and recommended that we simply do our own spraying with Odoban, which he said should solve the problem, and without the expense of his services. This honesty and helpful recommendation I value, and I would be much more likely to call him again.

Once mold takes a hold of a home, it can be hard to find all of it.

It can be even harder to get it all out. Before you start the process of removing mold from a house, you'll need to know where it is.

If you're not sure how to hire for mold testing, follow these basic tips:

1. Value Thoroughness over Thriftiness

While it might be tempting to work with the cheapest mold inspectors around, it could be better to hire a company that gives you a pricier estimate. If you want to make sure that your inspector doesn't miss any mold in your home, only a thorough job will do, and the most conscientious mold inspectors simply cost more to hire.

2. Be Aware of Hidden Costs

Some mold testing companies might offer free initial inspections, but these services are often bundled with costly add-ons. Also, if a company offers both mold inspections and mold remediation services, they might have more incentive to exaggerate your situation, which means you might want to have these services done separately.

3. Quiz Them on Their Mold Know-How

The EPA has laid down strict guidelines for mold testing and removal, and the right mold inspectors will be well-versed on all of these government standards and regulations. If mold inspection licensing is required in your state, the right company will have their paperwork in order, and they'll also be more than happy to provide free estimates and referrals. Also review these types of molds found in and around the home.

Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Fusarium, Penicilium and Stachybotrys are Toxic Molds

Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Stachybotrys are Common Household Molds

Ask a Mold Inspector about these Types of Household Molds:

  • Alternaria: this black/white mold typically develops in the kitchen, bathroom or other areas with moisture and a lack of sunlight.
  • Aspergillus: typically airborne it doesn't cause major issues, but when it gathers in areas of the house it forms toxic colonies.
  • Aureobasidium: this pink/black mold gathers on surfaces such as wood, caulk, paint and wallpaper. It's very common.
  • Chaetomium: this dark mold builds in sheetrock or drywall that has been exposed to water.
  • Cladosporium: found in household fabrics such as upholstery and older carpets as well areas where wood boards meet, such as cabinets or flooring.
  • Fusarium: also found in household fabrics such as upholstery and older carpets.
  • Penicillium: this fast-moving mold grows in insulation that has been exposed to water or flooding.
  • Stachybotrys Chartarum: this is also called Black Mold or Toxic Mold and develops around wet pipes, air ducts and tubes.
  • Serpula Lacrymans: rarely found indoors, this yellow mold loves wood. But it can sometimes appear on wooden surfaces in the home.
  • Trichoderma: this mold can be found across most absorbent household surfaces (wallpaper, carpets, particle board) exposed to repeated water.
  • Ulocladium: more common outdoors, this mold typically develops indoors after a flood
