WordPress Origin Story

In 2007, After about 8 years building websites with HTML, I was running into a site management problem. With website pages on some sites in the hundreds, it was becoming impossible just to keep up with web site building standards much less updating content. CSS implementation was changing and that alone was swamping my ability to properly service clients.

Come January 2008 and I was visiting the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, NV. I was there on a mission to see new tablets and phones that were going to be released. In particular, a visit at the Samsung booth caused me to pause at check out the yet-to-be-released Galaxy Note.

It became clear at that time, all my websites would have to be what was referred to then as “mobile-friendly”. In HTML, serving up different versions of websites was already hard enough just factoring in browsers of the day. I was already building narrow website to facilitate iPads.

When I got back home to Sacramento, I jumped on finding a content management system that would allow me to modernize existing clients sites and be ready for future changes. I tried Joomla first as I had been tinkering around with the CMS on a personal site. Then Drupal came to my attention, and finally I landed on WordPress.

Oddly the reason for landing on WordPress was because it seemed to be a platform that would allow clients to self-manage. Also access to early iterations of mobile responsive themes was more intuitive and user-friendly. WordPress looked like something I could coach a client to manage themselves.

12 years later and I am happy I went with WordPress. Now about those customers, most suggest they want to manage their content, but few ever do.
