Support » Requests and Feedback » Block settings first option opening automatically

  • Hello.
I have a great UX suggestion to make.

In the screen of editing posts and pages, whenever a block is selected, on the right side in the Block settings, the first Dropdown is automatically opened.

It turns out that we almost never want to access the options of the first block, so we always have to CLOSE IT and then find and open the desired block.

How do I get no options open when selecting blocks?

    Hi @delaitec

Your suggestion of all panels in the block settings sidebar to be closed by default sounds like it would be great for some users.

The challenge here is to find the right balance between collapsing the UI and promoting the most obvious controls editors may wish to use.

At present, the panels within the block settings are defined by individual blocks including whether they are opened or closed by default. There is no standard user preference setting available to close them all when selecting a block. It might be possible that a plugin could offer this functionality.

A lot of work is currently going into improving the block settings sidebar.

These efforts have also been touched on in the preliminary roadmap for WordPress 5.9.

Hopefully, it won’t be too long until you see improvements in this area.
