WP Mailster

Description

WP Mailster allows your users to be part of a group and communicate by email without having to log into a website.
Similar to programs like Mailman or Listserv this plugin allows you to run a discussion mailing list.

That means that every email sent to a central email address is forwarded to the rest of the members of the list.
When members reply to such emails WP Mailster again forwards them to the other list recipients.
Unlike newsletter plugins this allows true two-way communication via email.

Features include:

  • group communication through email
  • usable with any POP3/IMAP email account
  • recipients can be managed in the WordPress admin area
  • users can subscribe/unsubscribe through widgets on the website
  • all WP users can be chosen as recipients, additional recipients can be stored (without having to create them as WP users)
  • users can be organized in groups
  • single users or whole groups can be added as recipients of a mailing list
  • replies to mailing list messages can be forwarded to all recipients (or only the sender)
  • email archive for browsing the mails
  • full support of HTML emails and attachments
  • custom headers and footers
  • subject prefixes
  • many more features

Installation

  1. Upload the plugin files to the /wp-content/plugins/wp-mailster directory, or install the plugin through the WordPress plugins screen directly.
  2. Activate the plugin through the ‘Plugins’ screen in WordPress
  3. Use the WP Mailster screen to configure the plugin

FAQ

How do I send an email?

When you want to use WP Mailster you don’t need to browse to a website, login and do something to send the message there – you just use your favorite mail client.
Simply write an email to the mailing list’s address – and nothing else. So use Gmail, Outlook, Thunderbird, a Webmailer, any way you like – just send it to the mailing list address you have setup in WP Mailster.

Why take the emails so long to be delivered? How can I speed up sending?

WP Mailster is a part of WordPress which is a PHP based web application. That means: it can not act/run without being triggered and it can not run forever when triggered. This is a technical limitation coming from PHP, not from WP Mailster or WordPress.
Triggering means that somebody accesses the site. During the page load WP Mailster is handling the jobs to do (mail retrieving/sending). Thus mails can only be send/retrieved when somebody is browsing your site, otherwise the delivery is delayed or never done. As your site might not be browsed every few minutes 24×7 we recommend you to use a cronjob that opens the site periodically. We have a guide on our website on how to set that up.

What are send errors?

The send errors are messages your email server is giving back to WP Mailster basically saying “I will not forward this message”. Then WP Mailster sending for some time but eventually stops which is what you see happening.
The cause can be a lot of things, e.g. hitting send limits (per hour/day) or sending email with content that the server does not like.
You need to find out what your email servers are telling WP Mailster. Please follow our troubleshooting guide on our site.

We use the plugin with more than 20 mailing lists. The numerous setting options allow a flexible, stable and well to automate operation. Also the shortcodes and the frontend email archive are very helpful. The delivery times (Sprint Cronjob Service) could be a bit faster, but that's complaining about first world problems. The support is what you want it to be! Issue report - quick response with precise steps - fix on release level the next day! Great! So, we spent much time finding an appropriate listserv plugin - with all the common listserv problems - and WP Mailster is the solution.

After trying another WP mailing list plugin and not getting it working (and getting very poor support) I switched to WP Mailster, and had a completely different experience. It was easy to set up, works well and integrates easily into our site. When there was a problem about server limitations, Holger from WP Mailster was ready to help and sorted it out for me in a friendly way. I really recommend this plugin to add an email listserv to your WordPress site.

This is a really powerful, feature-rich, and easy to use plugin for managing multiple mailing lists. The most useful feature to me is the grouping of users, which you can think of as user roles. Mailing list members can be derived from any combination of grouped users, or ad-hoc direct additions to the mailing lists. Users can be added from your existing registered WP Users list, or as separately managed WP Mailster Users who only have mailing list privileges. There are many many nice touches, like available widgets for subscribe and unsubscribe, and short codes for users to self-manage their subscriptions, and for viewing archived e-mails. It's really slick! I highly recommend this plugin!

WP Mailster supports the many features listed (forming groups of users, multiple mailing lists, etc.), nice documentation for setting up a cronjob to trigger sending and receiving, and has a simple sign-up shortcode for your members. I had some trouble at my site and received great support, which I appreciate. I'm hoping to get enough members signing up to justify the premium version.

Really great plugin that solved an issue for a few of my clients who needed listserv functionality. Was able to write a complementary plugin to sync WP Mailster with another CRM. They provided excellent, timely support when we ran into configuration issues. Highly recommended for anyone who needs a mailing list/listserv feature.

Robust listserv plugin with many valuable features. Documentation is thorough and better written than many plugins. You must follow the documentation steps carefully as it is easy to overlook a critical instruction. However, the product works really well when properly installed. Reliability is great. Response to support requests is uneven – sometime fast, sometimes slow. Even with the paid version (Society), it can take up to two weeks for an acknowledgement of a request for technical assistance. Support itself is excellent once it responds. Holger is very knowledgeable and thorough. All issues submitted do get resolved. I particularly like the way he explains what the issue was and what he did to resolve it. This teaches me and I feel better prepared to do my own troubleshooting in the future. I really like the product and the way it performs.
