Understanding page experience in Google Search results

Page experience is a set of signals that measure how users perceive the experience of interacting with a web page beyond its pure information value. It includes Core Web Vitals, which is a set of metrics that measure real-world user experience for loading performance, interactivity, and visual stability of the page. It also includes existing Search signals: mobile-friendliness, HTTPS, and intrusive interstitial guidelines.

Understand how page experience will affect ranking

Once the changes mentioned in our roadmap are rolled out, page experience will join the hundreds of signals that Google considers when generating Search results.

While page experience is important, Google still seeks to rank pages with the best information overall, even if the page experience is subpar. Great page experience doesn't override having great page content. However, in cases where there are many pages that may be similar in relevance, page experience can be much more important for visibility in Search.

Page experience signals

The following signals are important for delivering a good page experience in Google Search:

Recent updates

Here's a log of everything we've announced about the page experience update on the Google Search Central blog:

Updates
August 4, 2021 We made several improvements to the Page experience report, including removing redundant Safe Browsing and Ad Experience widgets from the report. We also clarified that Safe Browsing isn't used as a ranking signal. Safe Browsing systems continue to play an important role to keep users of Google Search safe, and any flags will continue to be surfaced in Search Console outside of Page experience report.
June 15, 2021 The page experience update is now slowly rolling out (Top Stories will begin using this new signal by June 17, 2021). It will be complete by the end of August 2021.
April 19, 2021 We'll begin using page experience as part of our ranking systems beginning in mid-June 2021. We also announced details on what will be included in the update, a new Page Experience report in Search Console, and support for signed exchanges for all content on Google Search.
November 10, 2020 The page experience signals in ranking will roll out in May 2021. The change for non-AMP content to become eligible to appear in the mobile Top Stories feature in Search will also roll out in May 2021. We also announced new tools for publishers that are looking to improve page experience.
May 28, 2020 We will introduce a new signal that combines Core Web Vitals with our existing signals for page experience. The ranking changes won't happen before next year, and we will provide at least six months notice before they're rolled out. We're providing the tools now to get you started (and because site owners have consistently requested to know about ranking changes as early as possible), but there is no immediate need to take action.
