London is the capital and largest city of England and the United Kingdom . Standing on the River Thames in south-east England at the head of a 50-mile (80 km) estuary down to the North Sea , it has been a major settlement for two millennia. The City of London , its ancient core and financial centre, was founded by the Romans as Londinium and retains boundaries close to its medieval ones. Since the 19th century, "London" has also referred to the metropolis around this core, historically split between the counties of Middlesex , Essex , Surrey , Kent , and Hertfordshire , which largely makes up Greater London , the region governed by the Greater London Authority . The City of Westminster , to the west of the City, has for centuries held the national government and parliament .
London, as one of the world's global cities , exerts strong influence on its arts, commerce, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, health care, media, tourism and communications. Its GDP (€801.66 billion in 2017) makes it the biggest urban economy in Europe and one of the major financial centres in the world. In 2019 it had the second highest number of ultra high-net-worth individuals in Europe after Paris and the second-highest number of billionaires of any city in Europe after Moscow . With Europe's largest concentration of higher education institutions, it includes Imperial College London in natural and applied sciences , the London School of Economics in social sciences , and the comprehensive University College London . The city is home to the most 5-star hotels of any city in the world. In 2012 , London became the first city to host three Summer Olympic Games .
London's diverse cultures mean over 300 languages are spoken. The mid-2018 population of Greater London of about 9 million, made it Europe's third-most populous city . It accounts for 13.4 per cent of the UK population. Greater London Built-up Area is the fourth most populous in Europe, after Istanbul , Moscow and Paris, with 9,787,426 inhabitants at the 2011 census. The London metropolitan area is the third-most populous in Europe after Istanbul's and Moscow's, with 14,040,163 inhabitants in 2016. (Full article... )
Baden-Powell House , colloquially known as B-P House and sometimes referred to as 65 Queen's Gate , is a hostel and conference centre in South Kensington , London that was built as a tribute to Lord Baden-Powell , the founder of Scouting . The house, owned by The Scout Association , hosts a small exhibition relating to Scouting in its current form and a granite statue by Don Potter .
The building committee, chaired by
Sir Harold Gillett ,
Lord Mayor of London , purchased the site in 1956, and assigned
Ralph Tubbs to design the house in the
modern architectural style. The foundation stone was laid in 1959 by World Chief Guide
Olave, Lady Baden-Powell , and it was opened in 1961 by
Queen Elizabeth II . The largest part of the £400,000 cost was provided by the Scout Movement itself. (

Matilda Alice Victoria Wood (12 February 1870 – 7 October 1922), professionally known as Marie Lloyd ; was an English music hall singer, comedian and musical theatre actress. She was best known for her performances of songs such as "The Boy I Love Is Up in the Gallery ", "My Old Man (Said Follow the Van) " and "Oh Mr Porter What Shall I Do ". She received both criticism and praise for her use of innuendo and double entendre during her performances, but enjoyed a long and prosperous career, during which she was affectionately called the "Queen of the Music Hall".
Born in London, she was showcased by her father at the Eagle Tavern in
Hoxton . In 1884, she made her professional début as Bella Delmere; she changed her stage name to Marie Lloyd the following year. In 1885, she had success with her song "The Boy I Love Is Up in the Gallery", and she frequently topped the bill at prestigious theatres in London's
West End . In 1891, she was recruited by the
impresario Augustus Harris to appear in that year's spectacular
Theatre Royal, Drury Lane Christmas
pantomime Humpty Dumpty . She starred in a further two productions at the theatre,
Little Bo Peep (1892) and
Robinson Crusoe (1893). By the mid-1890s, Lloyd was in frequent dispute with Britain's theatre censors due to the risqué content of her songs. (

London doesn’t love the latent or the lurking, has neither time, nor taste, nor sense for anything less discernible than the red flag in front of the steam-roller. It wants cash over the counter and letters ten feet high.

London has one of the oldest and largest public transport systems in the world. Many components of its transport system, such as the double-decker bus, the Hackney Carriage black taxi and the Tube, are internationally recognised symbols of London. London has a comprehensive rail network with several major railway stations , including two international train stations at St. Pancras railway station and Stratford International , which connect London to mainland Europe through the Eurostar service. London also has six international airports . In addition to public transport, London is the start point for a number of motorway routes. The M25 is an orbital motorway which enables vehicles to avoid travelling through central London and is one of the busiest motorways in Europe.
