Privacy Policy Changelog

v1.1

On May 24, 2018, we updated our privacy policy, to comply with the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and make other improvements. While we are not based in the EU, we have many members and supporters who are, and we back the underlying goal of improving privacy protections. As an organization with a mission of protecting and advancing computer user freedom, we strive to go above and beyond what is required in this area.

The previous policy can be found at https://www.fsf.org/about/free-software-foundation-privacy-policy/free-software-foundation-privacy-policy-v1.0.

We made the following changes:

  • Added "Information You Make Public" and "General Data Protection Regulation" sections.

  • Removed "If there are changes made in the future, the changes will not affect information already collected." This is not something we can guarantee, since we may be required to make changes affecting information already collected in order to comply with the law. GDPR, for example, is affecting data already collected. We also decided that "will not affect" was too ambiguous.

  • Removed "The restrictions described here on the dissemination of personal information are not subject to change. This policy is updated occasionally but the changes will not reduce the privacy protection of visitors." for the same reasons as above.

  • Corrected information about how individuals can opt out of print and/or email contact.

  • Made cookie information more accurate.

  • Added mailing address.

  • Made contact email address consistently be [email protected].

  • Changed wording in Piwik section from saying opting out means "we won't collect information" to "Piwik won't collect information", since we still have temporary server logs we use for debugging.

  • Added clarifications about sharing information as part of contracted services.

  • Replaced "customer list " with "member list" in the Membership section.

  • Defined "we" in the opening.

  • Miscellaneous style / copyediting changes
