Tenuous curatorial statement: In more ways than one, packaging symbolises the negative space of our consumption. In this exhibition, on the artist's front lawn, we find ideologies of modernism haunting the foam and plastic, asking 'how do old values shape the new things we buy?'

In a sense, modernist sculpture was already a kind of packaging material

Was given 3 decommissioned fully-functional r610 servers by a kind donor, intercepted with great cunning on their way to landfill (can you effing believe it). Fertile ground for some free and open source platform sovereignty

Words like that, put up in lights, will bite back hard from a furious future. A whole new gen is watching the big people of today, taking real good note of who didn't have their back, who didn't do everything it takes, who chose themselves just like the boomers before them

Tweets like this are real cosy because it means you get to demand 'system change' and then cruise the mall on Black Friday in a freshly waxed 4x4, cheese burger sweating on the dash, without getting all eaten up by cognitive dissonance

Sure, one ton of consumer CH4/CO2/N2O *not* pushed into the atmosphere won't evidence much change, but all those tons add up to time, time between now & a very plausible hothouse earth scenario from which there's quite certainly no going back. More so for those on the brink today

Telling you hear so much of this rhetoric from privileged folk, whose spectre is "1.5C", not drought & famine this year, nor the ocean eating at their home today. Such comments will age very badly, as even their own children will see which side of history they so publicly chose

If you're of the mind we prob need changes in both individual consumer behaviour & government policy - together at once - you'll be glad to know 15.3k scientists have your back, in what is to date the most signed scientific document ever. 1 to have on file

Can't imagine how hard it must be for people in areas most affected by warming to read privileged people in rich countries saying "consumer choices don't matter", as every kg of CO2/CH4/N2O pushed into the atmosphere, every .001C rise, could tip the balance of their survival

Oil oligarchs aside, Dubai & Abu Dhabi are themselves a performance of affluence, a celebration of wealth maldistribution first & foremost. Such a setting could not be more loaded against Degrowth, lest of all activist voice. Ripe for discursive capture & corruption

Spent a bit of time in the UAE, Abu Dhabi in particular. It doesn't seem an easy place for protest. Disorder intolerant, & also bc there is little in the way of public space. Malls & their surrounds, hotel yards & rooftops act as 'parks' & squares. Streets are for cars, not feet

Turns out that it wasn't a metaphor after all. They did let money decide. There is only direct action now, and preparation for what is probably coming anyway
