- In The Simpsons episode "The Dad-Feelings Limited" actor Dan Aykroyd is special guest voice.[1]
- The first episode of The Great North is broadcast.
- January 15: HBO Max added its new "Animation" landing page.[2]
- January 25: Disney+ decides to remove Dumbo, Peter Pan, The Aristocats and Swiss Family Robinson from their kids profiles due to certain scenes featuring unfortunate old-fashioned racial stereotypes. They remain available to adult viewers.[3]
- January 28: After more than 10 years, Roger Craig Smith will no longer be the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog.[4]

- February 2: Kid Cosmic premiered on Netflix and has been renewed for two more seasons.
- February 9: Disney shuts down Blue Sky Studios due to current "economic realities" related to the COVID-19 pandemic.[5]
- February 15: Pop singer Gala releases a music video, Parallel Lines, with animation by Nina Paley.[6]
- February 22: Voice actor Harry Shearer announces he will no longer voice the African-American character Dr. Hibbert on The Simpsons, with Kevin Michael Richardson taking the role.[7]
- February 23: Monster High was announced to come back with a live-action movie and animated series on Nickelodeon.
- February 26: Tom and Jerry was released simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max.

- The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run was released on the launch of Paramount+.
- Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years premiered on Paramount+.
- March 5: Raya and the Last Dragon was released simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ (with Premier Access).
- March 6: New York Times Columnist, Charles M. Blow, claims that the Looney Tunes character, Pepé Le Pew, was a "normalized rape culture". After that, the character is removed from Space Jam: A New Legacy and will no longer be in every other current/future Warner Bros. projects in response to the George Floyd protests.[8][9][10][11]
- March 10: South Park releases another pandemic special.[12]
- March 14: In The Simpsons episode "Do Pizza Bots Dream of Electric Guitars" film director J. J. Abrams and actor Greg Grunberg are special guest voices.[13]
- March 15: DuckTales (2017) aired its final episode lasting 90 minutes, appropriately titled "The Last Adventure!".
- March 21: The 700th episode of The Simpsons, "Manger Things", premiered. The couch gag is animated by Bill Plympton.[14]
- March 21: Lebanese animated feature Alephia 2053 released on YouTube and streaming platforms.[15]
- March 26: The SpongeBob SquarePants episode, "Mid-Life Crustacean" was removed and will not be available to stream on Paramount+ due to the panty raid scene, while "Kwarantined Krab" decides not to air from Nickelodeon due to similarities to the COVID-19 pandemic.[16]
- March 28: In The Simpsons episode Uncut Femmes, rock musician Bob Seger is special guest voice.[17]
- March 29:
- The first episode of an animated series based on Pieter De Poortere's gag comic Boerke (in English: Dickie) airs on television.[18]
- 101 Dalmatian Street makes its US cable television premiere.[19]

- Cartoon Network Studios Europe is rebranded as Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe.
- Blue Sky Studios closes down.
- April 18: In The Simpsons episode Panic on the Streets of Springfield actor Benedict Cumberbatch is special guest voice.[20][21]
- April 25: 93rd Academy Awards:
- Soul, directed by Pete Docter and Dana Murray, produced by Pixar, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The soundtrack, composed by Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross and Jon Batiste, wins the Academy Award for Best Original Score.[22]
- If Anything Happens I Love You, directed by Michael Govier and Will McCormack, won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film.[22]

- July 31: The Owl House episode titled, "Knock, Knock, Knockin' on Hooty's Door" premieres to critical acclaim towards Luz and Amity officially dating making them the first animated couple on a Disney animated series.[29]

- August 6: Animaniacs announced that their second season will premiere on November 5. A teaser is uploaded on YouTube to celebrate the news.[30]
- August 11: What If...? an animated anthology series produced by Marvel Studios, premiered on Disney+.[31]
- August 20: PAW Patrol: The Movie was released simultaneously in theaters and streaming on Paramount+.

- September 13: The preschool block, Cartoonito, was released on Cartoon Network and HBO Max.
- September 18: After 18 years, Family Guy officially leaves Adult Swim.[32][33]

- October 2: The third season of Amphibia premieres to critical acclaim.
- October 10: Animaniacs reveals a sneak peek of the show's upcoming second season at New York Comic Con during a virtual event and is later released on YouTube by Hulu. [34]
- October 15: Michael Caine, American actor (voice of Lord Redbrick in Gnomeo & Juliet and Sherlock Gnomes, and Finn McMissile in Cars 2) has announced today that he has retired from acting.[35][36]
