Bear Mountain Monday - Sunset Hike: July 4th Event!

Needs a location

Join us on July 4th for a beautiful sunset climb up Bear Mountain.

Park in the main parking lot #1, right in front of the Bear Mountain Inn. The lot may fill up earlier in the day for the holiday, but it should be mostly clear by the time of the event. Prepare for traffic and arrive EARLY so you're ready to start hiking by 6:30.

To view and download the route:
https://www.plotaroute.com/route/1894982

We will meet outside the Bear Mountain Inn. We'll ascend on the Major Welch trail (red circle). After 1.65 miles, make a SHARP RIGHT TURN where the Major Welch and Appalachian Trails merge and follow the AT South (white rectangle) to Moon Rocks for sunset. After a break for sunset, we will descend to the inn on the AT North (white rectangle).

While we will try our best to stay together, the group will likely split up into smaller groups as we ascend, based on pacing preferences. Faster hikers are not obligated to wait for slower hikers. You should feel comfortable with the route listed in the event that you separate from the group.

Sunset is at 8:32pm.

  3. water and snacks

Fahnestock Series: Charcoal Burners, Beaver Pond & Jordan Pond

Needs a location

Fahnestock Series: Charcoal Burners, Beaver Pond & Jordan Pond
Tuesday 7/5 - 5:30 pm

HOPEFULLY THERE WILL BE RIPE BLUEBERRIES!

Distance: 5.2 miles, Time: ~2-2.5 hours, Elevation gain: ~600 feet

Gear: Water, snacks if you wish, hiking boots, warm-weather wicking clothing, headlamp just in case

On Route 301, you will see a sign for the Charcoal Burners trail on the side of the road, although it is probably overgrown with plants right now. You can park on either side of the road on the shoulder. We will be taking the trail northward, which is on the opposite same side of the road as the trail sign.

Our route will take us north on the the red Charcoal Burners trail for a bit over a mile until we reach Beaver Pond. We will then continue for another mile on the red trail until we reach a viewpoint. We will retrace our steps back on the red trail to the junction with the white trail. We will make a right on the white trail and take it for a mile, passing Jordan Pond on the way. We then reach the yellow trail, where we make a left, and follow it for 0.3 miles. This takes us out to the very start of the red trail, so we make a right on red and are back out on the road very shortly.
