    1. Time to make 2021 minor updates to my annual “opinions on ” thread. If you like these, you’ll like my 2019 book, Solar Power Finance Without the Jargon, a little old but still valid, five stars on Amazon.

Clean electricity is the plate at the decarbonization BBQ. Everything else gets loaded onto it. Without clean electricity, things get messy.

Good 🧵 here. EV sales up fast in China, we are finally getting to a point where EV adoption has a material impact on oil demand. Our current high oil price environment will just accelerate this if it stays. Fascinating space to watch.

"In essence, the GOP legislature has determined that deep decarbonization of the electric power sector is a fundamental public interest that is worth the potential cost, provided that grid reliability is maintained." New NC law requires 70% CO2 cut by 2030, net-zero by 2050.

From a Republican legislature, a mandated 70% reduction in electricity emissions by 2030. For real. Is it a perfect bill? No, but perfection is not how we’re going to get this done. Kudos to everyone who worked to get this thing passed.

New: 83% of the public supports having the federal government negotiate drug prices, even after hearing arguments for and against the idea. We didn't poll on baseball, motherhood, and apple pie, but I'm not sure they would score much higher.

Literally imploding. A fitting end to the Kemper saga. And a PSA: Kemper was an arguably reckless attempt to build a novel coal gasification combined cycle plant, scaling up an unproven gasifier to full scale far too fast. It is NOT synonymous with carbon capture tech writ large

Has anyone attempted to assess the impact of public transit and/or rail investments in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill on changes in ridership or mode shares? Any analysis that you can point me to?

Love this: on cost & performance goals for long-duration energy storage: “A goal I use is in my lab for long duration energy storage: The battery has to cost about the same price as dog food per pound and last forever with little intervention.”
