Template:R to ligature

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

When used with the "Redirect category shell" (Rcat shell) template:

Template Redirect category shell may be used to add one or more rcat templates, along with their parameters and categories, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation page below.

When used by itself:

  • From a title without ligatures: This is a redirect from a page name that replaces ligatures – (Æ or æ; Œ or œ; IJ or ij, or ß) – with their English language equivalents.
    • Apply this redirect (without piping) when the subject page concerns language translation or foreign language equivalents. Other pages that use this redirect should be updated with a direct link to the redirect target (again, without piping).
    • This redirect is used for searches and leads to its target in accordance with Wikipedia naming conventions.

Usage

  • Add this rcat to a redirect in the following manner:
#REDIRECT (target page name)

and when the redirect is in article mainspace, printworthiness should also be tagged:
#REDIRECT (target page name)

Template Rcat shell is an alias for the Redirect category shell template, which may be used to add as many appropriate rcats as needed, usually from one to seven, along with their parameters, to a redirect. For more information see the documentation on its template page. This rcat may also tag a redirect individually:
#REDIRECT (target page name)

R to ligature
This is in accord with instructions found at Wikipedia:REDCAT.
  • Use this rcat on any redirect to a page title that has one or more ligatures – (Æ or æ; Œ or œ; IJ or ij, or ß) – from essentially the same page name without any ligatures.
  • These redirects sometimes need to be sorted by surname or when a title begins with "A..." or "The...". Sort such redirects by using the DEFAULTSORT magic word in the following manner:
#REDIRECT (target page name)

Place it on the first new line (do not skip a line) after the Rcat shell. Skipping a line will introduce unnecessary whitespace below the Rcat shell after the edit is saved.
  • By default, this template tags redirects as unprintworthy. To tag and categorize a redirect as printworthy, use the bar key ( ¦ ) on your keyboard to type the addition ¦printworthy in the following manner:

Note: The bar key ( ¦ ) on the keyboard renders as a pipe ( | ) on the screen.
That will subdue the default unprintworthy category and populate Category:Printworthy redirects instead.
