Wikipedia:Reward board

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The reward board is an informal page where users who want a specific task related to Wikipedia (such as the promotion of an article to featured article status or the editing of an image) can offer a reward to editors willing to take on the task. The execution and details of the transaction are the responsibility of the participating parties, and the reward can be monetary (including cryptocurrency), goods (books, cookies, etc.), barnstars, or tit-for-tat editing (like improving another article).

Reward board is similar to the defunct Bounty board; however, instead of a donation to the Wikimedia Foundation, payment is made directly to a specific editor.

The Wikimedia Foundation is not hiring contributors and no payments are made by the Foundation. This is purely a page for editors to offer rewards to other editors. Challenges may remain open for a maximum duration of one year. After that period of time, the challenge will be moved to expired requests; however, the author of the challenge may repost the challenge with a new expiration period. The aim of this policy is to keep the board clutter-free, ensure editors are available to fulfill such challenges, and to ensure the challenges are still valid.

See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for information about monetary compensation and possible conflicts of interest.

How to offer a reward[edit]

If you would like to offer a reward such as the ones below, simply add an entry below. Add all the details that you feel are relevant to the reward, in a format similar to this pattern:

===Reward title===
*'''Offeror''': ~~~
*'''Date offered''': ~~~~~
*'''Request''': What needs to be done to claim the award.
*'''Reward''': The reward you are offering.
*'''Limit on rewards''': In the case of possible multiple rewards, any limit set.
*'''Expires''': Date until which your offer is valid. Max expiration date is one year from offer date.
*'''Sign-up''': Person interested in taking on the task. Please provide expected completion date.

In the case of a monetary offer, please specify country currency. Numerous countries use the same symbols.

Please place new entries in chronological order of expiration. See Wikipedia:Reward board fulfilled requests for past rewards.

Active article requests[edit]

Add content links to Frances Parthenope Verney[edit]

  • Literature Girl: Literaturegirl (talk)
  • October 6, 2021: 18:01, 6 October 2021 (UTC)
  • Request: On the Frances Parthenope Verney article, there is a link to a google archived article "In a Great Town Hospital" in the external links section. Many thank yous to whoever did that. I found that extremely valuable. If possible, I would like to add two more links to that section. The links should lead the reader to other important articles by Parthenope Verney. The articles I would like to see included are "The Miseries of War" and "Class Morality (“Class Morality.” Saint Paul's Magazine 8 (June 1871): 259-268. British Periodicals.") The Wikipedia article on P. Verney references both of these articles. They are equally representative of P. Verney's work with the Great Town Hospital article. Please note the links should lead to the complete text of the article, not bibliographical information.
  • Reward: US $25 via PayPal per link to each entire article, the tireless contributor barnstar, and I will reciprocate by copy editing up to three articles of your choice. Please be sure you understand PayPal before taking this assignment. It can take several days for the payment to "clear." It's almost as bad as mailing a check. If you'd prefer me to mail you a check, please let me know. Please correspond with me on my talk page about this if you would like to know more. Disclosure: I am a Nightingale scholar, and Parthenope is a Nightingale. I am not related to the Nightingales, however.

  • Expires: October 14, 2021

Yitzilitt. I worked on your draft a bit. Draft:Arlene Levine. I uploaded a photo, added paragraph breaks, and moved links down to the references section. Next step is to find and add an additional GNG passing source. I evaluate 2 of the 11 sources in the article as currently passing GNG, need 1 more, see my comment in the article for details. Step after that is for somebody to read through the GNG passing sources and add as much relevant info as possible. Then after that, hit the "Submit the draft for review" button. Hope that helps. –Novem Linguae (talk) 10:03, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[]

Completing short descriptions for good articles[edit]

  • Offerer: {{u|Sdkb}}talk
  • Date offered: 07:09, 31 May 2021 (UTC)
  • Request: Add a short description to every good article that lacks one (currently roughly 8000)
  • Reward: The Short Description Barnstar
  • Expires: When there are less than 1,000 good articles without short descriptions remaining
  • Sign-up: Just ping me if you've completed the task, and I'll AGF. If a group wants to take this on together, that's also fine.
    @Sdkb: Guess I'll get started on this one. Will try to get a sane number of short descriptions done. Maybe 100? Or even more than that. We'll see how far I get. Regards, User:TheDragonFire300. (Contact me | Contributions). 08:33, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @Sdkb I'll try this as well. ―Qwerfjkltalk 20:52, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[]
    Awesome; best of luck to you both! {{u|Sdkb}}talk 20:58, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @Sdkb:: Actually started on this last week. Glad to see more editors on board. My editing shortdesc history. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 02:32, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[]
@Sdkb: Done about 750 short descriptions and I think I am done with this task. Record is here. --Justanothersgwikieditor (talk) 02:06, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @Sdkb:: I have completed about 200 short descriptions as of today. Good exposure to different subjects. Easy to get caught up in reading them.My editing shortdesc history--Akrasia25 (talk) 02:43, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[]
    It looks like the total count remaining is down to 2900! Many hands make light work Face-smile.svg It's hard for me to tell exactly who's contributing and how much, but for anyone who's taken care of a chunk, just ping me once you've done as many as you're willing and I'll be happy to hand out the promised reward. Hopefully it'll be possible to get all the way to zero! {{u|Sdkb}}talk 04:36, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[]
    Sdkb and others: I handled a couple thousand or so of these by strategically adding short descriptions to infoboxes. Many of the remaining articles are were ships and military operations, but I have chosen not to add automated SDs to that template because the Wikidata descriptions are usually pretty good. They just need to be imported, mostly. (Current count is 2,300.) – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:31, 6 August 2021 (UTC)[]
    We're passing 1,278 now! While I've unfortunately not managed to contribute as many as other takers of this project, I've been trying whenever I've free time, which is hard when you've got other things to do. Thank you and good luck to everyone else on this project, for making the impossible possible. Let's see if we can get to 0! Regards, User:TheDragonFire300. (Contact me | Contributions). 00:32, 18 August 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @Sdkb: I've done a little over a hundred according to my contribs, and the remaining total is just under 950. – Reidgreg (talk) 19:06, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[]
    @Reidgreg, nice going! Are you planning to do a few more or calling it for now? I'm very happy to see this task being taken up—it seems very feasible we'll get to zero soon! {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:03, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[]
    I'll try for a few (dozen?) more today. – Reidgreg (talk) 21:25, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[]
    Awesome! Let me know what your (approximate) count is once you wrap up. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 21:27, 1 September 2021 (UTC)[]
    @Sdkb:Let's call it 140. – Reidgreg (talk) 02:51, 2 September 2021 (UTC)[]

  • @Sdkb: I have started using the shortdesc helper recently and I think this might be a task for me. I know I'm late (currently, around 800 GAs without short descriptions) but I'll try to finish the task. Luxtaythe2nd (talk) 03:05, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[]
  • @Sdkb: We might be out, believe it or not... your petscan link returns No result for source categories. We all did such an impressive job if that's the case! Regards, User:TheDragonFire300. (Contact me | Contributions). 22:02, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[]

Remove "A" as the first word from short descriptions[edit]

  • Offeror: 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs)
  • Date offered: ~~
  • Request: Remove "A" as the first word from short descriptions, per WP:SHORTDESC.
  • Reward: Your choice of barnstar, and I'll "thank" any random edits that I find interesting.
  • Limit on rewards: None. Pick as many barnstars as you like (within reason)!
  • Expires: When there are less than 50 article short descriptions that start with "a", or all of the rest are within reason.
  • Sign-up: Feel free to ping me here when you start on this task, and another ping when you finish.
    For the sake of the sanity of whoever takes this up: Please use AWB. For anyone not familiar use the search hastemplate:"short description" insource:/short description\|[Aan? /]to generate the list and replace ({{[Ss]hort description\|)[Aa]n? (\w) with $1{{subst:uc:$2}}. This is also a typical example of when JWB with faster saving and better substitution handling in diffs. If you don't have AWB access just ask. The folks at WP:AWBREQ are also always hungry for tasks. --Trialpears (talk) 21:54, 22 June 2021 (UTC)[]
    @Trialpears This doesn't work when the character after the 'a(n)' is not a number or a letter, such as here. As a side note, thanks for the RegEx! —Qwerfjkltalk 20:35, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[]
    Qwerfjkl I think you messed up the oldid, but the solution would be expanding the types of characters it capture after a(n). Try replacing \w with a period (.) which should match literally anything instead of just "word characters". I can't guarantee there won't be weird edge cases though. --Trialpears (talk) 20:49, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[]
    @Trialpears Thanks! (fixed the oldid).Qwerfjkltalk 21:06, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[]
@EpicPupper: I can take this on with AWB. I'm assuming you want the first word capitalized as well? Yeeno (talk) 🍁 06:35, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[]
@Yeeno, yes, thanks! I'm a pretty active AWB user myself as well, and with Trialpears' instructions, I'll probably try to take this on myself as well. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 16:13, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[]
@EpicPupper, Trialpears, and Yeeno: Any reason this couldn't be done by an AWB bot? I'd be happy to submit the BFRA if you like, and also remove "The" per WP:SDFORMAT. GoingBatty (talk) 22:48, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[]
I imagine there are a couple of false positives where it could cause issues. For example "A iPhone model" would be converted to "IPhone model" which wouldn't be great. --Trialpears (talk) 22:55, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[]
Exactly. I was thinking of a bot, but it would probably have too many false positives. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 23:47, 23 June 2021 (UTC)[]
@EpicPupper: Fair enough. I've added your find/replace rule to my AWB setup, and am making those updates when I visit articles for another reason. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 00:08, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[]
@EpicPupper I'll try this with JWB. —Qwerfjkltalk 21:34, 26 June 2021 (UTC)[]
I'm doing a few too ... from the back of the search list, it looks like I'm in danger of edit conflicts with Qwerfjkl ☆ Bri (talk) 23:22, 3 July 2021 (UTC)[]
By my calculations there are about 2,700 left. I got a little burned out but will jump back in to try to finish. Watch out for A capella! ☆ Bri (talk) 23:06, 8 July 2021 (UTC)[]
There might be 1,500 or so left. All those "a species of fly" are gone now, I think. ☆ Bri (talk) 13:04, 9 July 2021 (UTC)[]

Note: A useful task, but I would ask anyone tackling it not just to blindly remove "A" or "An". While you're there, also check that the remainder of the description complies with WP:SDFORMAT. In particular, many existing descriptions are far too long and need to be shortened to no more than 40 characters. MichaelMaggs (talk) 07:48, 10 July 2021 (UTC)[]

@MichaelMaggs I've been using the RegEx:
Replace: (\{\{\s*?[Ss]hort description\s*?\|.*?)[\.| |\. |,]\}\}
With:$1{{
To remove punctuation from the end.
1000 left!Qwerfjkltalk 06:22, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[]
@Qwerfjkl: I'm curious why you're using \s*? instead of \s* Are you replacing the regex with $1{{ or $1}} Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 02:44, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[]
Oops, I meant $1}}Qwerfjkltalk 05:35, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[]

Note: An initial article ("a", "an", or "the") should only be removed from short descriptions that are noun phrases. When an article has a short description formatted as a sentence (Example: Euclid's lemma, "A prime that divides a product divides one of the factors"), the article should not be removed, because it would break the grammar of the sentence. Also, do not convert these sentences into noun phrases by adding useless verbiage ("Lemma that a prime that divides a product divides one of the factors") just to comply with the rule about articles in short descriptions; that would not be an improvement. —David Eppstein (talk) 20:14, 11 July 2021 (UTC)[]

@EpicPupper Pretty much finished . ―Qwerfjkltalk 19:13, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[]
Thanks Qwerfjkl for the ping. I've awarded barnstars to everyone who participated, please let me know if I missed anyone. Cheers! 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs | please use {{ping}} on reply) 21:06, 13 July 2021 (UTC)[]

🐶 EpicPupper Going to start on it, a few left. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tintinkien (talkcontribs) 13:03, 2 August 2021 (UTC)[]

@EpicPupper: I will give this a start.--Akrasia25 (talk) 00:36, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[]
Completed. The list is done. The only ones left are for variations of "A cappella group" which is a group that performs A cappella so we should leave those alone. Good that a bot did not remove those instances of 'a'. (Now I have to go back and revert a few instances. I think it is good to close this task/reward. Any missed?--Akrasia25 (talk) 01:32, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[]
Looks like this is done, yep. Once again, thanks everyone! I’ll reward barnstars to whoever I didn’t last time. 🐶 EpicPupper (he/him | talk, FAQ, contribs) 17:03, 9 August 2021 (UTC)[]
  • Just to echo MichaelMaggs and David Eppstein. Do not blindly remove articles as an automated tick box exercise. There are many cases when they are needed for accuracy. This should not be treated as a hard rule. SpinningSpark 19:11, 3 September 2021 (UTC)[]
    • ... and in fact the WP:SDFORMAT guideline says just that "avoid initial articles (A, An, The) except when required for correct grammar and meaning". SpinningSpark 07:06, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[]

Sign-up @EpicPupper: I would like to sign up for this; ~70 articles is pretty easy and I can finish this quickly. Luxtaythe2nd (talk) 15:24, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[]

@Luxtaythe2nd This task is finished. The actual number of articles is probably less than 20; the rest are "a cappella" and similar exceptions. ― Qwerfjkltalk 17:57, 7 September 2021 (UTC)[]
