Conradine Barner Aagaard (pseudonym Annitta Carell; 1836 - 1920) was a Danish fiction writer. During the 1870s, she published several popular light fiction novels, historical works and short stories.[1][2]

Life[edit]

Conradine Barner was born in 1836 in Slagelse, Zealand, Denmark,[3] and was the only daughter of Lieutenant Colonel VT Barner, and his wife Hertha Adelaide Herbst.[4]

She began her writing career in 1870 by publishing her debut Biedermeier romantic novel Armbåndet (The Bracelet) which she published under her pseudonym Annitta Carell.[1][5] Under this name, she published eight novels. In addition to romance novels, her writing also included several historic novels and short stories. She gained attention for her 1875 novel I Landflygtighed (In Exile). The novel was about the reformation of the followers of the Calvinist Doctrine who fled from Scotland to Copenhagen.[6] She also depicted contemporary religious intolerance.

In 1880, she married OHCJ Aagaard, an assistant professor of Frederiksborg Latin School. After marriage, she took several trips abroad, where she observed different cultures and states of nature, which she talks about in her 1876 travelogue I Thyringen (In Thuringia).[6]
