I am not happy that I was immediately placed on the top tier of billing and hope Freshbooks finds it worthwhile to update its pricing strategy someday (for example, invoicing customers for the number of invoices they write per month rather than the total number of customers they have). That I can track hours real-time and generate an invoice with details easily. My business Achilles Heal is invoicing. I much rather do the work than work on getting paid for it (weird, huh... certainly not a good business practice). It has gotten more complicated to use, annual bill increased by more than 30% past 3 years now. I am getting no support or irrelevant answers to my concerns when I try to contact support despite paying for the plan with a "dedicated account manager. I am also getting charge extra for a second team member, my plan should have 2 included. I was offered lower transaction rates when my price increased last year but still paying the same 2.9% and can not get an answer from them. Freshbooks experiences a lot of interruptions in service and if customers try to pay or you are trying to invoice you have to wait until they go back online. They have been making changes that require re learning and re entering bank accounts, reconnecting stripe or paypal, re entering terms and conditions on contracts, too much to keep up with. I love Freshbooks ease-of-use and variety of features. I use it for sending estimates/proposals to clients, tracking time on projects, generating invoices and collecting payments. With the connection to my business bank account, I can reconcile all income and expenses and easily run detailed reports on where money is coming from and going to. Once an invoice is generated (usually based on the time tracked against the project/client), it is sent to the client, along with any needed reminder emails. All-in-all, Freshbooks has significantly reduced the amount of time I spend on the "administrative" front, while making it easier for my clients to pay me. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
No major dislikes. If I had to nit-pick, I wish there was an option to have invoice reminders sent "indefinitely" every X days until payment was received (rather than only have 3 scheduled reminder emails sent). It took some time for me to get a grasp on how bank reconciliation worked, but I can't be sure if that's a GUI issue, or just lack of experience on my end. A few times I have wished for immediately-available chat support (only phone and email available), but on the plus side, the support I have received has always been top-notch. I've been a FreshBooks customer since 2008. It was very helpful in launching my consulting business. In 2016 I, along with other "classic" FreshBooks subscribers, received a letter from founder Mike McDerment introducing their new platform. Notably, the email promised the following:
"Your current monthly service charge will be the same on the new product. Over time as we build more capabilities, you may choose to pay more to use some of those new capabilities based on the value they bring. That will be your decision at that time. We are excited to do more for you, more that we hope you will gladly choose to pay for."
and
"We believe in time, everyone will prefer to run their business on the new product, but we recognize that change is hard, and you will need to change on your timeline, not ours."
In 2018 I was contacted by FreshBooks that my fees to continue using their software would be increasing by about 100%. This was not for the new version, this was to keep using the same exact product I already had. That's right, all the same features, now twice as expensive. Given the work it would take to move to another system, I decided it was worth it to just bite the bullet and accept the fee increase.
This year I was informed that I would be forced to move to the new version of their software, and that my fees would be increasing, yet again, by another 25% . I expected this would happen at some point. You can't stop progress, right? As part of the transition I was told I must sever the relationship with my existing credit card processing company, Heartland, and be forced to use WePay, a Chase company, to process all of my payment. I am not a huge fan of Chase as a corporation and really didn't appreciate being forced into a relationship with them. I've had a great working partnership with Heartland and my local sales rep Jeff for over 5 years.
So now onto my review of the NEW version of FreshBooks. If you are reading other reviews you may want to figure out if their review was for FB Classic or the New Freshbooks
Meh.
The Layout/UX is not as efficient as the classic version of FreshBooks. I used to be able to see a lot more content at once, but now there's at least 50% more whitespace. I'm sure it would get top marks in a college UX design class, but I'm not hanging this software on my wall to admire for its aesthetics. I want to see as much useful, relevant data as I can. I want that data to be easily sortable and filterable in ways that make sense. I want to be able to copy and paste things directly from the UI into an email when I need to while keeping the tables intact. I used to have those things in Classic Freshbooks, but no longer. On the flip side I now routinely scroll past the overabundance of white space, unasked for charts and graphs, forced tutorials and totally unhelpful quotes from philosophers while I'm trying to get work done. The previous version was designed by a freelancer who actually had to create a solution to his own problems. This new version feels like a very academic "looks good on paper" approach to solving real-world business problems by people who have no idea what the people who are using their software need to do on a daily basis. I am unimpressed.
I should mention that I also use QuickBooks Online for my accounting, since FreshBooks has never really been a full-service accounting software or at least one that any of my accountants or bookkeepers wanted to deal with. I kept FreshBooks because it handled invoicing in a very efficient way that saved me a ton of time. Unfortunately, with this new version, that is no longer the case. The new version of FreshBooks is about as nimble and innovative as QBO so I have made the decision to transition away from FreshBooks and just use QuickBooks to handle my invoicing as well.
I don't like the payment processing with WePay. I used to get the full amount of my transactions up front and then remitted the processing fees at the end of the month. This made it better for my cashflow and easier from an accounting perspective. WePay deducts their fees in advance so now I have to figure out the math at the end of the month and add a journal entry in order to properly account for my processing fees. This is additional work that I didn't have to do previously.
I used to be very enthusiastic about this product and company, but my experiences in recent years show that they are changing and becoming a lot like the clueless, boring, corporate blobs to which they were once a "Fresh" alternative. Freshbooks is better than QuickBooks because it's much easier to use. It is simple to sell additional projects and bill completed tasks. It makes invoicing an enjoyable process. It's got many great functions. It is another common practice, for example, to give invoices to clients in PDF. To see which invoices remain unpaid, the customer gets an invoice. Whenever my employees go out for a business tour, I have no worries about the expense management and thanks to FreshBooks that has eradicated the need of paper work. Now I have all the receipts in well-organized form. Also while working on a certain project, I have the clear idea about the amount of time invested in certain project; in this way I can manage the budget and do some future planning for the new rates. The main issue I have found in this tool is that it is limited in its integrations and did not provide any option to add sticky notes especially in the project management feature because every time I cannot call the concerned person in your room, thus I feel that in terms of coordination on small level (employees) its not that much effective. The account aging feature is excellent, allows you to quickly understand which invoices are overdue and can send follow-up notifications manually or automatically. I have sent thousands of invoices, but I have never had any problems or lost any emails. The user interface is beautiful, very easy to navigate and use. Review collected by and hosted on G2.com.
The mobile application is good, but does not work well for some functions. If you have a lot of customers or want some of your other options, it can get expensive quickly. These reports are excellent because they can break down your profits and losses and summarize your deductions during the tax period. As a hosting platform, I can easily share the link for my tax service staff to access any number. Integration with other web services such as Gusto makes it easy to deliver payroll tracking. They recently updated the interface, which needs to be updated. But in general, areas that were missing a few years ago have been solved (old XML API, old interfaces, faulty mobile applications), so I don't have many complaints. I use two separate credit cards for the company. One card is used for non-billable products and the other card is used to issue invoices for my customers. The automatic import makes it easy to add billable items to the invoices. This template allows me to maintain brand consistency and professionalism. You can add a logo and choose a theme color to match your brand. There are two different template designs to choose from. It is easy to create an invoice. This helps me get the invoice faster. For example, if I want to charge customers a digital transfer fee, I can select the item from the drop down menu and even fill in the fees I used in the past. By automatically importing expenses, when I use a Chase account, Freshbooks often misclassifies items and usually doesn't complete the vendor section. If you don't use all the features of Freshbooks, unless you only have a few customers, the price you get will be a bit expensive. One of my biggest complaints about the new book is that if you change the terms of the invoice, it will change all future invoices. They have outstanding customer service which answers on the second ring, if not sooner. I have found that they go to great lengths to create an outstanding customer experience. I also like the fact that their application is neatly organized and clutter-free. I wish that they could provide buy links that we could use with our website products. That would be an excellent addition. I love its tracking capability the most. It keeps me update about the amount of time spent in particular project’s planning and its execution. Through this tool we are also carrying out the planning for further enhancement of your product in terms of project management. As far as I am concerned I would say it always provides us effective services. There are so many interesting qualities composed and cost controlled features. So I am absolutely a contented user.
