There are two SIM options for connecting your iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular to a data plan: a physical SIM card or eSIM technology.^*** (Note: iPad with Wi-Fi models cannot connect to cellular networks.)

Physical SIM card: All Wi-Fi + Cellular models have a physical nano-SIM tray that will hold a carrier nano-SIM card (also called 4FF SIM card). Your iPad may have a carrier SIM card already installed if you purchased it from a carrier. If not, you can contact your carrier to obtain an appropriate card for your iPad. eSIM technology: Newer Wi-Fi + Cellular models include built-in eSIM technology that essentially acts as a digital SIM card. There are a few ways to activate an eSIM on your iPad, including downloading it right on the iPad itself, scanning a QR code, or using an app from a carrier. With eSIM, you can choose cellular data plans from select carriers in the U.S. and in more than 180 countries and regions around the world. All Wi-Fi + Cellular models include a nano-SIM tray that supports a carrier SIM card.

Wi-Fi + Cellular models with embedded eSIM technology include: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation or later), iPad Air (3rd and 4th generation), iPad (7th generation or later), and iPad mini (5th and 6th generation).

Wi-Fi + Cellular models with a physical Apple SIM card include: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (1st generation), iPad Air 2, iPad (5th and 6th generation), and iPad mini 3 and iPad mini 4. Wi-Fi + Cellular models with an embedded Apple SIM include: iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2nd generation), iPad Pro 10.5-inch, iPad Pro 9.7-inch, iPad mini (5th generation), and iPad Air (3rd generation).

Apple Trade In makes it easy to get credit toward the purchase of your next iPad. Simply answer a few questions about your device. If your iPad is engraved, it may be eligible for trade-in. Based on what you tell us, we’ll provide an estimated trade-in value. If you pay monthly, we’ll apply the value as an instant credit to lower the monthly payments of your new iPad. If you pay in full, we’ll credit your payment method after we receive your trade-in. If it’s not eligible for credit, you can recycle it for free.

Once you accept the estimated trade-in value quote, we'll ship you a free trade-in kit. When we receive your trade-in, we'll verify its condition, and if everything checks out, your trade-in will be complete. If your device doesn’t match the condition you described, you’ll receive an email with next steps. If you paid in full and the value of your device was more than the cost of your new iPad, you’ll receive an Apple Gift Card by email with the remaining amount.

The online trade-in process generally takes 2–3 weeks.

Buy an iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular directly from Apple (pay in full or monthly with Apple Card Monthly Installments). After placing your order, you’ll need to activate your new iPad on a new cellular data plan with T-Mobile/Sprint or Verizon or add a new plan to your existing carrier account. Plan requirements vary by carrier.

Anyone who buys a new iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular directly from Apple and follows the carrier promotion instructions to qualify.

For T-Mobile/Sprint, activation can happen directly on your iPad. First, go to Settings and scroll to "Cellular Data." Then select your carrier and follow the prompts. When selecting your plan, T-Mobile/Sprint customers need a plan with a minimum of 10GB of data to be eligible. For Verizon, you’ll need to visit and follow the instructions. When selecting a Verizon plan, Unlimited and Unlimited Plus are eligible.

It depends on the carrier. If you activate a new plan with T-Mobile/Sprint, you’ll receive your $200 in the form of a virtual prepaid Mastercard® gift card within 6–8 weeks. If you activate a new plan with Verizon, you’ll receive a $200 Verizon e-gift card within 8 weeks.

Yes. If your current iPad is eligible for trade-in credit, you can offset the purchase price of a new one.^◊◊ If it’s not eligible for credit, you can recycle it for free.

For 5G service, you need to activate your iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular with one of these carriers. Some carriers may also require a 5G service plan or a new SIM.
