Our work

APC-wide activities

APC Member Grants

In 2016, APC initiated a new subgranting programme, with support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), aimed at enabling our member organisations to contribute towards achieving APC’s vision.

Local access and community networking

A growing number of communities and small, local and regional operators have taken a more pragmatic approach, using off-the-shelf low-cost commodity networking equipment to provide themselves and others with Wi-Fi, GSM and fibre connections.

A feminist internet

A feminist internet works towards empowering more women and queer persons – in all our diversities – to fully enjoy our rights, engage in pleasure and play, and dismantle patriarchy. These principles are critical towards realising a feminist internet.

African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms

The African Declaration on Internet Rights and Freedoms is not proposing new rights. It simply draws attention to the need to recognise existing rights on the internet and holding governments accountable for those. APC, as part of the Declaration Secretariat, plays a lead role in building awarene...

GenderIT.org

GenderIT.org, a project of the APC Women's Rights Programme, is meant to be a think tank OF and FOR women's rights, sexual rights and internet rights activists, academics, journalists and advocates from a range of disciplines and contexts.

Take Back the Tech!

Take Back the Tech! (TBTT) is a call to everyone, especially women and girls, to take control of technology to end violence against women. It's a global, collaborative campaign project that highlights the problem of tech-related violence against women.

Human Rights Council

APC participates at the UN Human Rights Council, an intergovernmental body responsible for strengthening the promotion and protection of human rights around the globe, to raise awareness and build support for internet rights.

World Summit on the Information Society

The two-stage World Summit on the Information Society took place in 2003 (Geneva) and 2005 (Tunis). It was convened upon the recognition that there was “an urgent need to harness the potential of knowledge and technology for promoting the goals of the United Nations Millennium Declaration.”

End violence research

In collaboration with partners in seven countries from 2012-15, APC researched corporate and state remedies for technology-related violence against women.

Internet rights are human rights

The full title of this APC initiative is “Internet rights are human rights: Securing freedom of expression and association on the internet to support democratisation by strengthening capacity and networking among human rights defenders”.

Global Information Society Watch

GISWatch is an annual report co-produced by the APC network and partners, which looks at the progress being made in creating an inclusive information society worldwide (particularly in implementing WSIS goals), encourages critical debate, and strengthens networking and advocacy for a just, inclus...

Internet Governance Forum

The Internet Governance Forum is a multi-stakeholder policy dialogue space convened by the United Nations Secretary General in 2006 to “foster the sustainability, robustness, security, stability and development of the internet.”

We work to empower and support organisations, social movements and individuals in and through the use of information and communications technologies (ICTs) to build strategic communities and initiatives for the purpose of making meaningful contributions to equitable human development, social justice, participatory political processes and environmental sustainability.

APC’s strategies and activities generally fit into one of the following areas: research and analysis; capacity development; advocacy; network and movement building; and strategic communications, which includes outreach and the development of information resources such as policy briefs, training materials and toolkits. Network building is also an internal strategy, with building a strong, sustainable APC member network being a core work area.
