What does meetup mean?
A meetup is an organized gathering of people, especially a regular meeting of people who share a common interest or hobby. It is usually initiated and arranged through a social network or website.
Meet up (without the hyphen) is a phrasal verb meaning to meet, as in Let’s meet up at the restaurant. The term meetup as a noun was popularized by the website Meetup.com, which helps people organize such events.
Example: After I moved here from the Midwest, I met most of my friends at an anime meetup.
Where does meetup come from?
As a verb, meet up is recorded in English at least as far back as the 1880s. It wasn’t until the 2000s that it started to be used as a noun in the form of meetup, thanks in large part to Meetup.com and the in-person meetings of people that it made it easier to organize.
Meetups are typically planned in advance but are casual in nature. The idea is usually to get people together in real life who otherwise haven’t met or who don’t usually have a chance to meet—like members of online communities or people with niche (very specific) interests. Meetups are almost always organized online through social networks or other websites. Most often, the point of a meetup is just socialization and fun, but they can take many forms.

How is meetup used in real life?
A meetup is a popular way for people with shared interests or experiences to get together, such as people who have a specific breed of dog or women who are in the tech industry. Or it could just be some friends who’ve planned to hang out.
#100DaysOfCode went to my first coding meetup today. They had some fire pizza and cookies. Might have to throw these meetups into my rotation.
