Hi! i uploaded a few videos with no background sounds or with only instrumental music. i did add descriptions & captions in media library. the checklist is still suggesting to add captions for these videos.
is it ok to just ignore the checklist? thank you! 🙂

@rainbow15 Hi there! Thanks for opening your topic. Adding captions is considered a best practice to help readers better understand your story. The checklist should not suggest adding captions for videos without audio tracks, and warnings should be resolved on the checklist once you’ve made suggested updates.

To confirm, you’ve added the descriptions and captions to the media thumbnail the checklist is referring to, but the checklist still shows the message. Is that correct?

If possible, could you share a screenshot or screen recording of the issue? You can use services like JumpShare or Recordit to share.

Unfortunately the WordPress media modal is not the right place to configure video captions.

Video captions as described by the checklist refers to the “Caption and Subtitles” panel in the editor when inserting a video:

There you can upload a .vtt file (in the WebVTT format) containing subtitles for the video.

These subtitles will then be displayed when viewing your story, much like when watching a subtitled movie.

You can use a service like https://www.vtt-creator.com/ to create such a VTT file for your videos and then upload the resulting file in the editor.

Granted, it sounds a bit complex, but it really helps improving the experience for your viewers. We plan to eventually make things easier and more automated in the future though.

thank you Pascal! i think it would be nice to have an option to indicate the videos only have background music, or no sound, so we could just add text to the video slide, since we won’t have caption files to upload.

We already try to detect videos with no sound at all & hide the checklist message for those.

People would still benefit from captions for videos with only background music, even if the subtitle just says “(piano music)”.

But it’s definitely a good suggestion to give you as a creator an option for this, I’ll make a note of it! In the meantime, feel free to ignore the checklist message in that case.
